Chapter 9: The Daughter They Wanted

The hospital went into lockdown.
Security officers sealed the exits while Detective Harper coordinated a search of the surrounding streets.
Adrian stood in the corridor, gripping Chloe's stuffed rabbit.
He could still smell the strawberry shampoo she used every morning.
"Find her," he told Harper.
"We're reviewing every camera.""
"She's ten years old!""
"I know.""
"Someone walked into a hospital and took my daughter while two officers were standing outside her room!""
Harper didn't argue.
She understood his anger.
But anger wouldn't bring Chloe home.
A security officer approached with a tablet.
"Detective, we have footage.""
Harper took it.
The video showed a woman wearing pale blue scrubs entering Serena's room.
She had a medical mask covering her face.
She carried a clipboard.
She spoke to Serena for less than a minute.
Then she took Chloe by the hand.
Adrian leaned toward the screen.
"Stop.""
The officer paused the footage.
"Zoom in on her left hand.""
The image enlarged.
A small tattoo was visible near the woman's thumb.
A black rose.
Adrian recognized it.
"Vanessa.""
Harper frowned.
"Are you certain?""
"She has that tattoo. I saw it when we were engaged.""
The detective immediately contacted the officers guarding Vanessa at the station.
They reported that Vanessa was still in custody.
But when Harper asked them to check her belongings, one officer discovered something disturbing.
Vanessa's medical records had been accessed by someone using a stolen hospital identity.
A second person had entered the police station an hour earlier, claiming to be her attorney.
That person had left carrying a document folder.
And nobody had questioned her.
Harper stared at the footage.
"Someone helped her.""
Adrian's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered immediately.
"Where is my daughter?""
Vanessa's voice came through.
"Hello, Adrian.""
His stomach tightened.
"Give her back.""
"You're making demands now?""
"She's a child!""
"And she is the reason we're having this conversation.""
Adrian closed his eyes.
"What do you want?""
"The original foundation documents. The B-17 key. And the flash drive from your grandfather.""
"Why?""
Vanessa laughed softly.
"Because your family has been hiding things from me for decades.""
"You already have Richard.""
"Richard is a weak old man. He was useful, nothing more.""
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"If you touch Chloe—"
"Don't threaten me, Adrian. You have no idea how much I've already sacrificed.""
He heard a small sound in the background.
A child's voice.
"Daddy?""
Adrian's heart nearly stopped.
"Chloe!""
"Vanessa says you're coming.""
"Sweetheart, listen to me. Are you hurt?""
"No.""
"Where are you?""
Vanessa interrupted.
"That's enough.""
Adrian gripped the phone.
"Let me speak to her.""
"You'll see her when you bring what I asked for.""
The call ended.
Adrian looked at Harper.
"She has Chloe.""
Harper nodded.
"We'll trace the call.""
Serena heard everything.
When Adrian returned to her room, she was standing beside the bed despite the doctor's instructions.
"Where is she?""
He approached.
"Vanessa has her.""
Serena's face crumpled.
"No.""
"We're going to find her.""
Serena grabbed his arm.
"Adrian, Vanessa won't hurt Chloe immediately.""
He stared at her.
"How can you know that?""
"Because she needs something from her.""
"The inheritance?""
Serena nodded.
"But there's another reason.""
"What?""
Serena looked toward Noah.
"Chloe was present when your grandfather gave me the original bracelet.""
Adrian frowned.
"What bracelet?""
"The one Noah wore when he was born.""
He remembered the bracelet from the hospital room.
The faded plastic band Serena had kept beneath her pillow.
"That bracelet is important?""
Serena nodded.
"Your grandfather told me it contained a tiny identification chip. It was connected to the medical foundation's original patient registry.""
Adrian felt cold.
"Why would a baby bracelet contain something like that?""
"Because your grandfather didn't trust the foundation's electronic records. He wanted a physical backup.""
Serena swallowed.
"The chip contains the original beneficiary list and proof that the medical trust was being used to transfer money illegally.""
Adrian stared at her.
"Where is it now?""
Serena looked toward the bedside table.
"It was in the envelope.""
Adrian followed her gaze.
The envelope was gone.
Someone had taken it.
Detective Harper traced Vanessa's call to an abandoned industrial building near the river.
A police team moved immediately.
Adrian insisted on accompanying them.
Harper finally agreed, but only after ordering him to remain behind the officers.
The building was an old textile warehouse.
Its windows were boarded.
The loading doors were chained.
A single light glowed on the second floor.
Officers entered through the side entrance.
Adrian followed.
They found an empty office, a discarded medical uniform, and a child's drawing on the floor.
It showed three people.
A little girl.
A woman.
And a man holding a key.
Underneath, Chloe had written:
*Daddy will find me.*
Adrian picked it up.
His eyes filled.
"She's here.""
Harper examined the drawing.
"Maybe.""
A noise came from the hallway.
Two officers moved toward it.
A door opened.
A young man stepped out.
He was holding a phone.
"Stop!""
He dropped it immediately.
Harper approached.
"Where is the girl?""
The man shook his head.
"I don't know.""
"Who brought you here?""
"Vanessa.""
Adrian stepped forward.
"Where is my daughter?""
The man looked at him.
"She left.""
"When?""
"Twenty minutes ago.""
"Where did she take her?""
The man swallowed.
"To the old house.""
Adrian frowned.
"Which house?""
"The Bennett estate.""
Harper turned sharply.
"Why would she return there?""
The man looked down.
"Because that's where the safe is.""
Adrian remembered the basement.
B-17.
The archive.
The place where his grandfather had hidden the original documents.
Vanessa wasn't running away.
She was going back to finish what she had started.
The estate was surrounded by police when Adrian arrived.
The front gates were open.
Lights illuminated the driveway.
A black car sat near the entrance.
Harper instructed the team to surround the property.
Adrian waited beside her.
Then he heard something.
A child crying.
"Chloe!""
He moved forward.
Harper caught his arm.
"Wait.""
But the crying came again.
"Daddy!""
Adrian pulled free.
He ran through the front door.
The house was empty.
He followed the sound down the hallway and into the old library.
A chair had been overturned.
A lamp lay broken on the floor.
Then he saw the basement door.
It was open.
Adrian rushed down the stairs.
At the bottom, Vanessa stood beside the old archive.
Chloe was sitting on a wooden chair with her hands tied loosely in front of her.
Her cheeks were wet.
"Daddy!""
Adrian stopped.
Vanessa held a small object in her hand.
A silver pocketknife.
"Don't move.""
Adrian raised both hands.
"Let her go.""
Vanessa smiled.
"You're always so dramatic.""
"She's ten years old.""
"Yes. And she's very important.""
Chloe shook her head.
"Vanessa, please.""
Vanessa turned toward her.
"Quiet.""
Adrian took a slow step forward.
"Tell me what you want.""
"The key.""
He removed the silver key from his pocket.
Vanessa's eyes brightened.
"And the bracelet.""
"Where is Chloe's brother's bracelet?""
Vanessa laughed.
"Your little wife kept it in the most predictable place.""
Adrian looked at her.
"Why are you doing this?""
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
"Because I was supposed to have everything.""
She stepped closer.
"My father promised me the company. He promised me the house. He promised me that one day I would be the most powerful person in the Bennett family.""
"Your father?""
"Richard.""
Adrian stared.
"You knew he was your father?""
"Of course.""
"Then why did you pretend to be interested in marrying me?""
Vanessa looked genuinely offended.
"Because I needed access to the trust. Richard couldn't get it. You were the only person who could sign the documents.""
Adrian's voice hardened.
"You destroyed my family for money.""
Vanessa laughed.
"Your family destroyed itself. I simply refused to be left out.""
Chloe began crying again.
"Please let me go.""
Vanessa turned.
"Stop crying!""
Adrian stepped forward.
"Don't speak to her.""
Vanessa raised the knife.
"One more step and I'll make sure you regret it.""
He stopped.
Then he slowly placed the key on the floor.
"There.""
Vanessa looked at it.
"Now the bracelet.""
Adrian reached into his jacket and removed the hospital bracelet.
It had been recovered from the envelope.
Vanessa's eyes widened.
"Give it to me.""
"First, let Chloe go.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"You still don't understand.""
She walked toward the archive door.
"The documents are inside. Once I have them, the trust belongs to me.""
Adrian watched her.
"You're wrong.""
Vanessa paused.
"What?""
"The trust belongs to the children.""
She laughed.
"Not anymore.""
She inserted the key into the lock.
The mechanism clicked.
The door opened.
Inside were rows of metal cabinets.
Vanessa rushed toward the central drawer.
Adrian looked at Chloe.
He made the smallest gesture with his hand.
Two fingers.
Then a slow movement toward the floor.
Chloe understood.
She had played hide-and-seek with him hundreds of times.
When Vanessa turned toward the drawer, Chloe slipped one hand free and dropped to the floor.
Vanessa spun around.
"Stop!""
Adrian moved.
He lunged toward her.
The pocketknife fell from her hand and skidded across the concrete.
Harper and two officers rushed down the stairs.
"Police! Don't move!""
Vanessa struggled.
An officer restrained her.
Adrian dropped beside Chloe.
"Are you hurt?""
She threw herself into his arms.
"I was so scared.""
He held her tightly.
"I know, baby. I'm here.""
Chloe buried her face against his chest.
"Did you bring Mommy?""
"She's waiting for you.""
"And Noah?""
"He's safe too.""
Chloe began crying harder.
Adrian kissed her forehead.
"You were very brave.""
She shook her head.
"I wasn't brave.""
He pulled back.
"Yes, you were.""
"I was scared the whole time.""
Adrian smiled through his tears.
"Being brave doesn't mean you're not scared. It means you keep going even when you are.""
Vanessa was escorted upstairs.
But before she reached the front door, she turned toward Adrian.
"You think you've won?""
He said nothing.
She smiled.
"Ask your mother what happened to the original inheritance.""
Adrian frowned.
"What are you talking about?""
Vanessa leaned closer.
"Your grandfather didn't leave the company to you.""
An officer pulled her away.
"He left it to someone else!""
Adrian watched her disappear through the doorway.
Then Harper returned to the basement.
"Mr. Bennett, there's something you need to see.""
She pointed toward the open archive.
The central drawer contained several folders.
One was marked:
*FINAL BENEFICIARY AGREEMENT.*
Adrian opened it.
The first page contained the names of the beneficiaries.
Chloe Bennett.
Noah Bennett.
And a third name.
He read it twice.
Then he looked at Harper.
"Who is this?""
Harper examined the document.
"I don't know.""
Adrian felt his heart pound.
The third beneficiary was:
*VANESSA ELEANOR BENNETT.*
He turned the page.
There was a handwritten note from his grandfather.
If Vanessa ever reaches this document, it means the family has failed to protect her.
Adrian stared.
Beneath the note was another sentence.
She is not Richard's biological daughter.
The room went silent.
Adrian looked toward the stairs where Vanessa had disappeared.
Then he looked at the document again.
If Richard wasn't Vanessa's father, why had she believed he was?
And who was her real father?
At the hospital, Serena was waiting when Adrian returned with Chloe.
She ran toward them.
"Chloe!""
"Mommy!""
They embraced.
Serena held her daughter so tightly that Chloe giggled.
"Mommy, you're squishing me.""
Serena laughed through her tears.
"Sorry, sweetheart.""
Adrian stood beside them.
For the first time, he felt that his family might actually have a future.
Then his phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
It contained a photograph of the final beneficiary agreement.
A red circle had been drawn around the third name.
Below it was a sentence.
*You have been looking at the wrong family for ten years.*
A second message appeared.
*Ask Serena who Chloe's biological mother really is.*
Adrian slowly looked up.
Serena was watching him.
And when she saw the expression on his face, she began to cry.
"Adrian," she whispered.
He lowered the phone.
"What does that message mean?""
Serena closed her eyes.
May you like
Then she said something that shattered the last piece of certainty he had left.
"Chloe isn't my biological daughter.""
