Chapter 1: The Recording She Never Expected

Marcus glanced at his phone.

The blue loading circle continued spinning.

I tightened my fingers around his hand.

"Darling, please," I whispered.

"We don't need to put ourselves through this.""

Ethan stood near the wall, one hand pressed against his bleeding lip.

"Funny," he said quietly.

"You were perfectly happy putting me through something I didn't do.""

Marcus shot him a warning look.

"Watch your mouth.""

Ethan laughed bitterly.

"That's all you ever say to me now.""

The security application finally opened.

A thumbnail appeared on the screen.

The dining room.

The timestamp showed 8:42 p.m.

I recognized the moment immediately.

That was when I had placed the envelope beside the money.

My stomach tightened.

Marcus tapped the recording.

"Let's see what happened," he said.

I forced myself to breathe normally.

The video began.

There was no sound at first, only a clear image of Ethan entering the dining room. He looked tired, wearing a gray sweatshirt and jeans. He stopped when he noticed the cash.

Then I appeared.

In my red dress.

I watched myself approach the table, smiling.

Marcus leaned closer to the screen.

"Why were you two meeting down here?""

I swallowed.

"I wanted to talk to him privately.""

Ethan didn't say anything.

On the screen, I pushed the money toward him.

Then I watched myself tear my dress.

My fingers went cold.

The recording showed everything.

The fabric ripping.

The glass falling.

My hand striking my own cheek.

The money scattering across the marble floor.

And then, most importantly, the moment I began screaming.

Marcus stopped breathing.

He replayed that section.

Once.

Twice.

Then he looked at me.

"Vanessa.""

I immediately shook my head.

"Marcus, I can explain.""

He didn't raise his voice.

That frightened me more than shouting.

"Explain what?""

I glanced at Ethan.

He was staring at me with an expression I had never seen before.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Relief.

"That's not the whole story," I said quickly.

"The camera doesn't record everything that happened before.""

Ethan stepped forward.

"Then let's look at the audio.""

Marcus frowned.

"What audio?""

"The camera records sound too. Remember? You showed me the system when you installed it.""

Marcus tapped the speaker icon.

A second later, my own voice filled the dining room.

"Three hundred thousand dollars. It's all here.""

Then Ethan's voice.

"Is this a setup?""

My recorded voice answered.

"Take the money and disappear.""

Marcus slowly turned toward me.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

The recording continued.

"Your father doesn't need to know everything.""

Then my voice again.

"Your father loves me.""

Ethan's response was unmistakable.

"He's my father.""

"And he's my husband.""

Marcus lowered the phone.

"Vanessa, what is this?""

I reached for him.

"Baby, you have to understand. Ethan has been harassing me for months. I was trying to make him leave peacefully.""

Ethan let out a disbelieving laugh.

"By offering me three hundred thousand dollars?""

"Don't interrupt me!"" I snapped.

The room went silent.

I realized my mistake immediately.

Marcus stared at me.

His eyes moved to my torn dress, then to the phone.

"Why did you tell him to take the money and disappear?""

I swallowed.

"Because he threatened me.""

"Where?""

"What?""

"Where in that recording did he threaten you?""

I couldn't answer.

Ethan slowly wiped the blood from his lip.

"Ask her why she had an envelope with my name on it.""

Marcus looked down at the table.

The white envelope was still there.

He picked it up.

"What's inside?""

I stepped toward him.

"Nothing important.""

He looked at me.

"Then you won't mind if I open it.""

"Marcus, please.""

He pulled the envelope away from my reaching hand.

Inside were several printed documents.

The first page contained Ethan's full name, date of birth, and a signature that looked remarkably similar to his.

Marcus frowned.

"What is this?""

Ethan approached the table.

"Let me see.""

Marcus handed him the papers.

Ethan scanned the first page.

Then his face changed.

"Where did you get this?""

I said nothing.

He held up the document.

"This is a voluntary renunciation of inheritance.""

Marcus stared at him.

"What?""

Ethan turned the page.

There was another document.

A statement claiming he had accepted three hundred thousand dollars in exchange for permanently surrendering any future claim to his father's estate.

At the bottom was a signature.

Ethan Cole.

Except Ethan hadn't signed it.

"I never agreed to this," he said.

Marcus's expression hardened.

"Vanessa?""

I forced a shaky laugh.

"That was just a proposal. I thought it might help settle the situation between you two.""

"A proposal?"" Ethan repeated.

"You forged my signature.""

"Don't be ridiculous.""

He pointed at the paper.

"That's not my signature.""

"You've signed dozens of documents over the years. Maybe you forgot.""

"I didn't sign it!""

Marcus placed the papers on the table.

"Enough.""

I turned toward him.

"Marcus, darling, please listen to me. I have been trying to protect our marriage. Your son has made it clear that he doesn't want me here.""

Marcus looked exhausted.

"That doesn't explain why you fabricated an assault.""

"I didn't fabricate anything!""

He looked at the video again.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Marcus asked a question that made my heart sink.

"Did you hit yourself?""

I stared at him.

"Marcus—"

"Answer me.""

I looked down.

The silence was answer enough.

Ethan stepped backward.

He looked at his father, then at the blood on his hand.

"Now you know why I wanted you to watch.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

When he opened them, he looked at me differently.

Not like a husband looking at his wife.

Like a stranger discovering someone had been living inside his home.

"Go upstairs," he said.

I almost smiled.

Finally.

I could get away from Ethan, clean myself up, and think.

But Marcus wasn't finished.

"Pack your belongings.""

My smile disappeared.

"What?""

"You heard me.""

"You're kicking me out?""

He nodded toward the staircase.

"Tonight.""

I stared at him.

Then I looked at Ethan.

He was watching me.

For the first time in eighteen months, I couldn't hide behind a trembling lip or a carefully chosen sentence.

I leaned toward Marcus.

"You can't do this. I'm your wife.""

Marcus's voice was barely audible.

"And Ethan is my son.""

I felt something inside me snap.

"You have no idea what that boy has done behind your back!""

Ethan frowned.

"What are you talking about?""

I laughed.

"Ask him about the money he stole from your company.""

Marcus turned.

"What money?""

Ethan went completely still.

And I realized I had just opened a door I hadn't intended to open.

Because Marcus didn't know about the missing company funds.

May you like

But Ethan did.

And judging by his expression, neither of them had any idea how much I knew.
