Chapter 8: The Recording That Changed Everything

Detective Harper arrived at the hospital at 12:10 a.m.

Adrian showed her the photograph.

She immediately called the local police department and requested officers be dispatched to Dr. Reed's address.

"Do you know where his office is?"" she asked.

"Near the old medical district.""

"Give me the address.""

Adrian searched his messages.

Then he looked up.

"Why would someone attack him?""

Harper put her phone away.

"Because he knows something they don't want revealed.""

"About Noah?""

"Possibly.""

Adrian looked toward the hospital room.

Serena was asleep with one arm wrapped around Noah.

Chloe was curled beside her.

He didn't want to leave them.

But he also knew that whatever happened next might determine whether his children would ever be safe.

"Can you put officers outside their room?""

"Already done.""

"Two officers. No exceptions.""

Harper nodded.

"I'll arrange it.""

Dr. Reed's office had been ransacked.

Drawers were pulled out. Medical files covered the floor. A framed photograph of Dr. Reed and Richard Bennett had been smashed.

There was blood on the carpet near the desk.

But there was no body.

Detective Harper walked through the room with a forensic officer.

"Any sign of forced entry?""

"Back window," the officer replied.

Harper examined the broken latch.

Then she noticed something beneath the desk.

A small metal case.

She crouched and opened it.

Inside was a digital recorder.

A handwritten label was attached.

*FOR ADRIAN BENNETT.*

Harper immediately called him.

Adrian arrived thirty minutes later.

He entered the office with Harper.

The room smelled of dust, chemicals, and something metallic.

"Is Dr. Reed alive?""

"We haven't found him.""

Adrian looked at the blood on the carpet.

"Then we find him.""

Harper handed him the recorder.

"Listen to this.""

He pressed the button.

Static crackled.

Then his grandfather's voice filled the room.

"Adrian, if you are hearing this, I hope I have finally managed to protect the people I love.""

Adrian closed his eyes.

He hadn't heard that voice in years.

"My grandson, there are things I should have told you when I was alive. I delayed because I believed I could resolve everything quietly.""

The recording paused.

Then continued.

"Your father has been stealing from the family trust. He has also been using the medical foundation to hide financial transfers.""

Adrian looked at Harper.

She motioned for him to continue.

"The foundation was created to protect children with inherited cardiac conditions. Richard discovered that Noah carried the genetic marker. He believed that by obtaining legal guardianship, he could gain access to the foundation's assets.""

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"However, there is a provision in the original trust. The money cannot be withdrawn by any family member. It can only be used for medical treatment, research, and the protection of affected children.""

A faint rustling sound followed.

Then his grandfather spoke again.

"Richard became desperate when he learned that Noah's birth had triggered an independent review.""

Adrian frowned.

"Triggered?""

The recording continued.

"He arranged for Serena to disappear, and he altered the child's medical records. He also instructed Daniel Price to prepare false guardianship documents.""

Then came a sentence that made Adrian's blood run cold.

"But Richard did not act alone.""

The recording crackled.

"Someone inside the medical foundation helped him.""

Adrian looked at Harper.

"Who?""

The voice on the recording answered.

"Dr. Samuel Reed.""

Adrian stopped breathing.

Harper frowned.

"That's the same doctor who called you.""

The recording continued.

"He was the person who provided Richard with the original genetic report. He was also responsible for falsifying the child's first medical assessment.""

Adrian stared at the recorder.

"Why would he call me if he was involved?""

Harper didn't answer.

Then the recording reached its final section.

"There is one person I believe can help you understand everything. Her name is Evelyn Carter. She was my personal assistant for twenty-two years. She knows where the original foundation records are hidden.""

The recording ended.

Adrian slowly lowered the device.

"Where is Evelyn?""

Harper looked at him.

"We've been trying to locate her.""

He remembered the call from Chapter Four.

Evelyn had said she knew what Richard had done.

She had warned him.

Then she had disappeared.

"She contacted me before.""

Harper's expression sharpened.

"When?""

"After the wedding.""

"What did she say?""

"She told me my father was hiding something in B-17.""

Harper took out her notebook.

"Do you have her number?""

Adrian nodded.

He searched his call history.

The number was still there.

Harper entered it into her phone.

Then she stopped.

"That's strange.""

"What?""

"This number was disconnected yesterday.""

Adrian stared at her.

"Someone is making sure we can't reach her.""

Harper looked toward the shattered office window.

"Or someone has already reached her.""

At 3:30 a.m., Adrian returned to the hospital.

Serena was awake.

She was sitting near the window, watching the first pale light appear over the buildings.

"Couldn't sleep?"" he asked.

She shook her head.

"Every time I close my eyes, I see that room.""

Adrian sat beside her.

"It's over.""

Serena looked at him.

"Is it?""

He hesitated.

"We found a recording from my grandfather.""

"And?""

"Richard was using the medical foundation to steal money.""

Serena looked down at Noah.

"That's why he took him.""

Adrian nodded.

"But there was someone else involved.""

"Who?""

"Dr. Reed.""

Serena's face changed.

"No.""

"You know him?""

She nodded slowly.

"He was the doctor who examined Noah after he was born.""

Adrian leaned forward.

"What did he do?""

"He told me the baby had a serious heart condition. He said Noah needed immediate treatment.""

Adrian stared.

"Did he?""

Serena shook her head.

"Later, another doctor examined him. He said Noah was perfectly healthy.""

Adrian felt anger rising.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because by then Richard had taken him.""

She closed her eyes.

"I thought I had failed him.""

Adrian took her hand.

"You didn't.""

Serena looked at him.

"I should have fought harder.""

"You were imprisoned. You were threatened. You were alone.""

Her lips trembled.

"I was his mother.""

"And you never stopped being his mother.""

For a moment, she leaned against him.

Then she whispered:

"Adrian, there's something I've never told you about the night Noah was born.""

He turned.

"What?""

"Richard came to the hospital.""

Adrian frowned.

"Why?""

"Because he wanted to see the baby before anyone else.""

"Why?""

Serena looked toward the door.

"He said Noah had to be removed immediately.""

Adrian's face hardened.

"What did you do?""

"I refused.""

She took a shaky breath.

"Then he told me that if I didn't cooperate, Chloe would disappear too.""

Adrian's hand tightened around hers.

"What happened next?""

"Your father showed me a document. It was a medical consent form. He said you had already signed it.""

Adrian shook his head.

"I never signed anything.""

"I know.""

Serena looked at him.

"But there was something written at the bottom.""

"What?""

She whispered:

*Temporary transfer of custody to the paternal grandfather.*

Adrian stared.

"How did he get that approved?""

Serena shook her head.

"I don't know.""

At 8:15 a.m., Detective Harper received a call.

A woman had been found at a roadside motel twenty miles outside the city.

She was alive.

Her name was Evelyn Carter.

Adrian immediately asked to speak with her.

Harper agreed to arrange a meeting at the station.

When they arrived, Evelyn was sitting in a small interview room.

She was in her late sixties, with short silver hair and tired eyes.

She looked at Adrian and began crying.

"You look just like your grandfather.""

Adrian sat across from her.

"Why did you disappear?""

Evelyn looked at Detective Harper.

"Because Richard's people were following me.""

"Did you know what he was doing?""

She nodded.

"Your grandfather discovered the financial fraud shortly before he died. He asked me to preserve the original records.""

"Where are they?""

Evelyn reached into her handbag.

She removed a small envelope.

"Here.""

Adrian opened it.

Inside was a photograph of a safe deposit box key and a handwritten account number.

"What's this?""

"The original medical foundation records. Your grandfather gave me instructions to release them only when you had proof that Richard was involved.""

Adrian looked at her.

"Why didn't you give them to the police earlier?""

"Because the police officer assigned to your grandfather's death was working for Richard.""

Harper's expression changed.

"Who?""

Evelyn slid a second photograph across the table.

It showed a man in uniform standing beside Richard.

Adrian recognized him.

He had seen him at the wedding.

He was the officer who had arrived to investigate the scene after Serena was discovered.

Detective Harper stared at the picture.

"That's Captain Robert Hayes.""

Evelyn nodded.

"Richard paid him for years.""

Harper immediately stood.

"Don't leave this room.""

She stepped outside and called her supervisor.

Adrian remained with Evelyn.

"Is there anything else?""

Evelyn hesitated.

"Yes.""

"What?""

"Your grandfather didn't die of a stroke.""

Adrian closed his eyes.

"Vanessa told me.""

Evelyn shook her head.

"She doesn't know the full story.""

Adrian looked up.

"What do you mean?""

Evelyn leaned closer.

"Your grandfather was poisoned.""

Adrian went still.

"By Richard?""

Evelyn shook her head.

"No.""

She stared directly at him.

"Your grandfather discovered that the person stealing from the foundation was not Richard.""

Adrian's chest tightened.

"Then who?""

Evelyn's voice dropped.

"Your grandfather's own wife.""

Adrian stared at her.

His grandmother had died when he was twelve.

Or so he had been told.

Evelyn continued.

"She was the person who arranged the financial transfers. Richard helped her cover them up.""

Adrian shook his head.

"My grandmother died before my grandfather.""

"That's what the family was told.""

He stood.

"You're saying she's alive too?""

Evelyn nodded.

"She disappeared the same night your mother was supposedly killed.""

Adrian felt dizzy.

"Where is she?""

Evelyn looked toward the glass window.

Then she whispered:

"She's been living under a different name.""

"Where?""

"At the same residence as your mother.""

Adrian stared.

Harbor Lights.

He remembered the photograph.

His mother sitting in the garden.

And the woman standing in the background.

An elderly woman wearing a pale hat.

He hadn't recognized her.

But now he remembered the face.

His grandmother.

That afternoon, Adrian returned to Harbor Lights.

He asked Dr. Miles to arrange a meeting with the elderly woman from the photograph.

The director looked uncomfortable.

"Mr. Bennett, I need to explain something.""

"What?""

"The resident you are asking about is not registered under the name Bennett.""

"What name does she use?""

"Margaret Lewis.""

Adrian stared.

"Can I see her?""

Dr. Miles nodded.

She led him down another corridor.

At the end was a small room overlooking the garden.

An elderly woman sat in a wheelchair, reading a book.

Her white hair was arranged in a neat bun.

Her hands were thin.

But when she looked up, Adrian recognized her immediately.

His grandmother.

Eleanor's mother-in-law.

Margaret Bennett.

"Adrian?""

He stepped inside.

"Grandma.""

She smiled faintly.

"I wondered when you'd come.""

He approached her.

"Why did you disappear?""

Her smile faded.

"Because I was afraid of what your grandfather had discovered.""

"What did you do?""

She closed the book.

"Something terrible.""

Adrian's throat tightened.

"Did you poison him?""

Margaret looked at him.

Then she nodded.

"Yes.""

The admission struck him like a physical blow.

"Why?""

"Because he was going to expose the foundation.""

Adrian stepped backward.

"How much money did you steal?""

"Enough to ruin the family.""

"Did Richard help you?""

She nodded.

"Your father believed he could control the situation. But he was never the one making the decisions.""

Adrian stared.

"Then who was?""

Margaret looked toward the window.

"Vanessa.""

He frowned.

"Vanessa?""

"She discovered the transfers before your grandfather did. She brought the evidence to me. She said she could help us protect the money.""

Adrian shook his head.

"She was a child.""

"She was very clever.""

Margaret leaned forward.

"She knew how to make people believe what she wanted them to believe. Richard thought he was using her. But she was using him.""

Adrian felt cold.

"Why did she want to marry me?""

Margaret looked directly at him.

"Because she wanted the one thing neither Richard nor I could obtain.""

"What?""

"Control of Chloe's inheritance.""

Adrian frowned.

"Chloe's inheritance?""

Margaret nodded.

"Your grandfather had created a separate trust for her. But there was a condition.""

"What condition?""

"Chloe would inherit the controlling shares only if she remained the sole surviving direct descendant of your grandfather's line.""

Adrian stared.

"That's not possible. Noah exists.""

Margaret's face changed.

"Exactly.""

She leaned closer.

"That's why Vanessa arranged for Noah to disappear.""

Adrian felt his blood turn to ice.

"She knew about him?""

"She knew everything.""

"Then why didn't she tell Richard?""

Margaret looked toward the door.

"Because she wanted him to believe he was in control.""

She paused.

"Adrian, there is something else. Vanessa has been looking for Chloe.""

Adrian immediately stood.

"Why?""

Margaret grabbed his wrist.

"Because Chloe is the only person who can activate the final inheritance clause.""

Adrian stared.

"What does that mean?""

Margaret's eyes filled with fear.

"It means your daughter has something inside her possession that proves who really owns the foundation.""

Then she whispered:

"Vanessa knows about the bracelet.""

Adrian rushed back toward the hospital.

He called Detective Harper.

"Get officers to Serena's room immediately.""

"What happened?""

"Vanessa is targeting Chloe.""

"She's in custody.""

"Then someone else is working for her.""

Adrian reached the hospital entrance.

He ran down the corridor.

Two officers were standing outside Serena's room.

One turned toward him.

"Mr. Bennett?""

"Where is my daughter?""

"Inside.""

Adrian opened the door.

Serena was sitting upright.

Noah was asleep.

But Chloe's bed was empty.

"Where's Chloe?""

Serena looked confused.

"She was with the nurse.""

Adrian's stomach dropped.

"What nurse?""

"A woman who said she needed to take Chloe for a routine examination.""

Adrian turned toward the officers.

"Who authorized that?""

They exchanged a glance.

Then one reached for his radio.

A nurse hurried into the room.

"Mr. Bennett, I'm sorry. I thought she was with you.""

Adrian felt the world stop.

On the bed lay Chloe's stuffed rabbit.

Beside it was a folded note.

He opened it.

There were only two sentences.

*Thank you for bringing Noah back.*

*Now bring me the girl.*

Adrian looked at Serena.

Her face crumpled.

May you like

"Please," she whispered.

"Find our daughter.""
