Chapter 7: The Child They Tried to Erase

"Where is my son?""
Adrian's voice shook as he stared at the frozen security footage.
Detective Harper enlarged the image.
Richard stood near the basement entrance, holding a suitcase in one hand. Vanessa was beside him, carrying a small child wrapped in a blue blanket.
The baby's face was partially visible.
Adrian felt his knees weaken.
"That's Noah.""
Serena covered her mouth.
"He's alive.""
For four years, she had believed her son was dead.
Four years of waking up in the middle of the night, remembering the tiny weight of him against her chest. Four years of wondering whether he had suffered, whether he had cried for her, whether someone had held him when he needed his mother.
And now she was looking at proof that he had survived.
"Where is he?"" she whispered.
Harper checked the timestamp again.
"The footage came from a security system at a private property owned by a company connected to Richard. The vehicle left approximately twenty minutes ago.""
Adrian grabbed his coat.
"Then we follow it.""
"Mr. Bennett, we already have officers tracking the vehicle.""
"That's my son!""
"And we intend to bring him home safely. But you cannot drive around looking for him without knowing where they're going.""
Adrian looked at Serena.
She was crying silently.
He knelt beside her.
"I'm bringing him back.""
Serena caught his hand.
"Please don't let them hurt him.""
"I won't.""
Chloe stood beside the bed, clutching her stuffed rabbit.
"Daddy?""
Adrian turned.
"Yes, sweetheart?""
"Do I have a little brother?""
He looked at her.
"Yes.""
Chloe's eyes widened.
"He's real?""
Adrian smiled through his tears.
"He's real.""
"Can I meet him?""
"Very soon.""
Chloe looked at her mother.
"Mommy, I always wanted a brother.""
Serena pulled her close.
"So did I, sweetheart.""
For a moment, the room was filled with something that had been missing for years.
Hope.
Then Harper's phone rang.
She answered, listened, and immediately straightened.
"Repeat that.""
A pause.
"Are you certain?""
Her expression hardened.
She ended the call.
"Richard's vehicle has been located.""
Adrian stood.
"Where?""
"At a private airfield outside the city.""
"He's trying to leave the country?""
"That's what it looks like.""
Adrian looked at the footage again.
"Then we go now.""
Harper shook her head.
"We have officers there. I need you to remain here.""
Adrian stepped closer.
"Detective, he has my child.""
"And rushing into an active police operation could put that child in danger.""
Serena reached for Adrian's sleeve.
"Listen to her.""
He looked down at her.
"Serena—"
"Please. Don't let Richard use your anger against you again.""
Adrian slowly exhaled.
Then he nodded.
"All right.""
At 7:18 p.m., the police operation began.
Richard's black SUV was parked beside a private hangar.
A small aircraft waited on the runway.
Officers approached from both sides.
Daniel Price was already inside the hangar, speaking with a pilot.
Vanessa stood near a luggage trolley.
And Richard was holding a little boy.
The child was wearing a blue sweater and gray trousers.
His dark hair was neatly combed.
He looked confused.
"Daddy?"" he asked.
Richard bent down.
"Everything is fine, Noah.""
"Where's Mommy?""
Richard's jaw tightened.
"Your mother isn't coming.""
"But I want Mommy.""
Vanessa approached.
"Come here, sweetheart.""
Noah moved away from her.
"I want my real mommy.""
Vanessa froze.
Richard grabbed the boy's arm.
"Enough.""
A police officer stepped into the hangar.
"Richard Bennett! Put the child down and raise your hands!""
Richard turned sharply.
For a second, he looked genuinely surprised.
Then he tightened his grip on Noah.
"Stay back!""
Officers drew their weapons.
"Put the child down!""
Vanessa backed away.
"Richard, don't!""
Daniel Price moved toward the aircraft.
An officer intercepted him.
The pilot climbed out of the cockpit with both hands raised.
Richard looked around.
There was nowhere to go.
"You're making a terrible mistake," he shouted.
The officer repeated the command.
"Put the child down!""
Noah began crying.
"Grandpa, I'm scared.""
Richard looked at him.
And something cold passed across his face.
"Your grandfather is trying to protect you.""
But Noah shook his head.
"I want Mommy.""
Richard's grip loosened.
An officer moved forward and gently lifted the child away.
Noah immediately ran toward him.
"Mommy!""
Vanessa started crying.
"Richard, tell them!""
He didn't look at her.
He simply stood there as officers handcuffed him.
Then he turned toward the lead detective.
"You have no idea what you've uncovered.""
The detective stared at him.
"Then you'll have plenty of time to explain it.""
Richard smiled faintly.
"Not everything in that family belongs to Adrian.""
Adrian was waiting outside the hospital when Detective Harper called.
"Mr. Bennett, we have your son.""
He stopped breathing.
"Is he safe?""
"Yes. He's physically unharmed. He's being examined by medical personnel.""
Adrian closed his eyes.
"Thank God.""
"There's one complication.""
His eyes opened.
"What?""
"Richard is claiming the child was placed in his care through a legal guardianship agreement.""
Adrian's expression hardened.
"What agreement?""
"He says Serena signed it.""
"She never signed anything.""
"We need to verify that.""
Adrian looked through the hospital window.
Serena was sitting beside Chloe.
He could see her holding the little girl's hand.
"Bring him here," he said.
"We're arranging transport.""
Forty minutes later, the hospital doors opened.
A female officer entered carrying a small backpack.
Behind her walked another officer holding the hand of a little boy.
Serena stood immediately.
Her fingers flew to her mouth.
"Noah?""
The little boy looked toward her.
For a moment, he seemed uncertain.
Then his eyes widened.
"Mommy?""
Serena dropped to her knees.
"My baby!""
Noah ran.
She caught him in her arms, burying her face in his hair.
"Oh, sweetheart. Oh, my beautiful boy.""
Noah clung to her neck.
"Mommy, where were you?""
Serena sobbed.
"I'm here. I'm here now.""
"I missed you.""
"I missed you every single day.""
Adrian stood behind them, unable to speak.
Chloe slowly approached.
She looked at her little brother.
"Hi.""
Noah turned.
"Who are you?""
Chloe smiled nervously.
"I'm Chloe. I'm your big sister.""
He stared at her.
Then he held out a small toy car from his pocket.
"Do you want this?""
Chloe laughed through her tears.
"Yes!""
Serena looked up at Adrian.
He finally moved forward.
He knelt beside them.
"Noah.""
The little boy looked at him.
"Who are you?""
Adrian swallowed.
"I'm your daddy.""
Noah studied his face.
Then he looked at Serena.
"Is he my daddy?""
Serena nodded.
"Yes, sweetheart.""
Noah slowly reached out and touched Adrian's cheek.
"You're real?""
Adrian's tears finally fell.
"Yes, buddy. I'm real.""
Noah wrapped his small arms around his father's neck.
And Adrian held him.
He held him with the desperation of a man trying to recover four stolen years.
Later that evening, Detective Harper returned with documents.
"There's something else," she said.
Adrian looked up.
"What now?""
"Richard had a guardianship agreement in his possession.""
Serena's face tightened.
"That's impossible.""
Harper placed a copy on the table.
"The document states that you voluntarily surrendered parental rights four years ago.""
Serena stared.
"I never signed that.""
Adrian examined the page.
A signature appeared at the bottom.
Serena Bennett.
It looked convincing.
But Adrian noticed something.
The letter S was unusually sharp.
He had seen Serena's handwriting thousands of times.
She never wrote it that way.
"This is forged.""
Harper nodded.
"We suspect the document was created by Daniel Price.""
"Can you prove it?""
"We're investigating.""
Serena looked at the paper.
"There's something else.""
Everyone turned toward her.
"Richard didn't take Noah because he wanted to raise him.""
Adrian frowned.
"Then why?""
Serena looked at Detective Harper.
"Because Noah was born with something.""
"What?""
Serena hesitated.
"Your grandfather's blood condition.""
Adrian stared.
"What condition?""
"Your grandfather had a rare inherited disorder. He told me it could affect the heart. He believed Chloe might have inherited it, so he arranged testing.""
Harper looked confused.
"Why would that matter?""
Serena swallowed.
"Because Noah was the only person in the family who tested positive for a specific genetic marker.""
Adrian looked down at his son.
Noah was sitting beside Chloe, making a tower out of plastic cups.
"What does that have to do with Richard?""
Serena's voice dropped.
"Your grandfather left a medical trust. It contains money for research and treatment for anyone carrying that marker.""
Adrian's expression changed.
"How much money?""
Serena looked at him.
"More than two hundred million dollars.""
The room fell silent.
Adrian slowly turned toward Harper.
"So Richard wasn't just trying to take the company.""
"No," Serena whispered.
"He needed Noah.""
At 11:43 p.m., Adrian received a call from an unknown number.
He stepped into the hallway.
"Hello?""
A man's voice answered.
"Mr. Bennett, I believe we need to talk.""
"Who is this?""
"Dr. Samuel Reed. I was your grandfather's personal physician.""
Adrian straightened.
"What do you want?""
"I've been waiting four years for this conversation.""
"Do you know about Noah?""
"Yes.""
"Then tell me why Richard took him.""
The doctor hesitated.
"Because the child is not simply a beneficiary of the medical trust.""
Adrian gripped the phone.
"What else?""
"Your grandfather discovered that someone had falsified medical records after his death. He suspected the trust would be activated under certain conditions.""
"What conditions?""
"A confirmed genetic diagnosis and proof of intentional concealment.""
Adrian looked through the glass at his family.
"Who concealed it?""
The doctor lowered his voice.
"Richard did.""
"Why?""
"Because the original trust contained a clause that would transfer control of the entire family foundation to an independent board if the child was ever deliberately hidden from his parents.""
Adrian felt cold.
"Then Richard's money is at risk.""
"Not just his money.""
The doctor paused.
"His freedom.""
Before Adrian could ask another question, the doctor added:
"There's one more thing. Your grandfather left a final recording.""
"Where?""
"In my office.""
"Send it to Detective Harper.""
"I can't.""
"Why?""
The doctor's voice trembled.
"Because someone broke into my house tonight.""
A loud crash sounded in the background.
Then the line went dead.
Adrian stared at the phone.
A message appeared.
It contained a photograph of Dr. Reed's office.
On the desk was an open safe.
May you like
And beside it lay a bloodstained medical coat.
*The man who knew the truth about Noah had disappeared.*
