Chapter 3: The Little Girl's Secret

Adrian couldn't move.
For several seconds, he simply stared at Serena.
"What do you mean Chloe was there?""
Serena wiped her cheeks.
"She was only seven. They brought her to the estate once.""
"Why?""
"Because Vanessa wanted me to cooperate.""
Adrian's voice cracked.
"She used our daughter to threaten you?""
Serena nodded.
"She told me that if I ever tried to escape, Chloe would be taken away permanently.""
Adrian gripped the bedrail.
"Did Chloe see you?""
"Yes.""
The room seemed to shrink around him.
"How much does she remember?""
"I don't know. She was very young.""
Adrian stood abruptly.
"I need to talk to her.""
Detective Harper raised a hand.
"Mr. Bennett, please. Don't pressure the child. We need to handle this carefully.""
He looked at her.
"She's my daughter.""
"And she's potentially a witness to a serious crime. Let our child specialist speak with her.""
Adrian dragged a hand over his face.
He had thought Chloe was safe.
He had believed the worst thing Vanessa had done was make his daughter feel unwanted.
Now he wondered how many nights his little girl had spent frightened without telling him.
Chloe was sitting in the hospital waiting room with Melissa.
She was drawing a picture with a box of colored pencils.
When Adrian approached, she immediately looked up.
"Daddy?""
He crouched in front of her.
"Hey, sweetheart.""
"Is Mommy okay?""
"She's resting.""
Chloe looked down at her drawing.
There were three people holding hands beneath a bright yellow sun.
"Can we go home now?""
"Not yet.""
She nodded.
Then she continued coloring.
Adrian watched her for a moment.
"Chloe, can I ask you something?""
She stopped coloring.
"Okay.""
"Do you remember visiting Grandpa Richard's old house when you were little?""
Her hand froze.
Just for a second.
But Adrian saw it.
"Maybe.""
"Do you remember going downstairs?""
Chloe slowly put down the yellow pencil.
Melissa looked between them.
"Adrian, what happened?""
He ignored the question.
"Sweetheart, you can tell me anything. You're not in trouble.""
Chloe's eyes filled with tears.
"Vanessa said I wasn't allowed to tell.""
Adrian felt something break inside him.
"Tell me what?""
The little girl looked around.
Then she leaned closer.
"She took me to a room under Grandpa's house.""
Adrian closed his eyes.
"What happened there?""
Chloe rubbed her fingers together.
"There was a door with a little window. Mommy was behind it.""
He struggled to breathe.
"Did you see her?""
Chloe nodded.
"She was crying.""
"Did you talk to her?""
"I tried.""
Chloe's lower lip trembled.
"But Vanessa pulled me away.""
Adrian wrapped his arms around her.
"Oh, sweetheart.""
"She said Mommy was sick. She said Mommy didn't want me anymore.""
Chloe began sobbing.
"I knew she was lying.""
Adrian held her tightly.
"How did you know?""
"Because Mommy was singing.""
He pulled back slightly.
"She was singing?""
Chloe nodded.
"The song she used to sing when I couldn't sleep. I heard it through the door.""
Adrian remembered that song.
Serena used to hum it every night when Chloe was a baby.
"What did Vanessa do?""
"She covered my ears.""
Chloe wiped her nose.
"Then she told me if I ever mentioned the room, Mommy would disappear forever.""
Adrian kissed her forehead.
"She can't hurt you anymore.""
Chloe looked at him.
"Promise?""
"I promise.""
But even as he said it, he knew he couldn't make that promise without finding out exactly how powerful Vanessa and his father had become.
Detective Harper arranged for a child specialist to speak with Chloe later that afternoon.
Adrian remained in the waiting room.
Melissa sat beside him.
"Adrian, I need to tell you something.""
He turned.
"What?""
She hesitated.
"I never trusted Vanessa.""
He let out a bitter laugh.
"Why didn't you say anything?""
"I did. Several times.""
He frowned.
"When?""
"Last Christmas. Remember when she refused to let Chloe open Serena's old photo album?""
Adrian remembered.
Vanessa had said the photographs were unhealthy reminders.
Melissa had argued with her.
He had told them both to stop fighting.
"I thought she was just being jealous," he muttered.
"She wasn't jealous, Adrian. She was controlling what Chloe remembered.""
Melissa reached into her handbag.
"I found something after the wedding.""
She handed him a folded envelope.
"What is this?""
"It was underneath Vanessa's chair.""
Adrian opened it.
Inside was a printed document with the Bennett family trust's logo.
At the top were the words:
*PROPOSED AMENDMENT — BENEFICIARY RIGHTS AND MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY.*
He read the first page.
Then the second.
His blood ran cold.
The document proposed transferring certain management powers from Adrian to a newly established family holding company.
Vanessa was listed as the proposed director.
Richard Bennett was listed as the primary adviser.
And there was one more name.
Chloe Bennett.
His daughter's inheritance was being used as leverage.
"Where did you get this?""
"One of the wedding guests found it near the bridal table. She thought it belonged to Vanessa.""
Adrian read the last page.
There was a signature line.
His name had already been typed beneath it.
But the signature itself was blank.
At the bottom, someone had written:
*To be executed immediately following marriage registration.*
Adrian stared at the document.
The wedding hadn't just been a celebration.
It had been a transaction.
At 6:20 p.m., Detective Harper returned.
"We've obtained permission to secure the Bennett estate," she said.
"A team is preparing to search the property.""
Adrian stood.
"I'm coming.""
"No.""
"It's my house.""
"It's a potential crime scene.""
"My wife was held there. My daughter was taken there. My father may have been involved.""
Harper studied him.
"That is exactly why you shouldn't interfere.""
Adrian reluctantly sat down.
She placed a photograph on the table.
It showed an old wooden door with a narrow rectangular window.
"Does this look familiar?""
Adrian's face tightened.
"The service basement.""
"Do you know what's behind it?""
"No.""
"Your former wife says there may be a storage room.""
Serena had mentioned B-17.
Adrian pulled the key from his pocket.
"This might help.""
Harper examined the engraving.
"B-17?""
"That's what my grandfather wrote.""
The detective looked at him.
"Do you know where the key belongs?""
Adrian shook his head.
"Not yet.""
Harper took a photograph and returned the key.
"We'll find out.""
Then her phone rang.
She answered, listened, and her expression changed.
"You're certain?""
Another pause.
"Do not touch anything. Wait for the forensic team.""
She ended the call.
Adrian stood again.
"What happened?""
"We found the basement.""
"And?""
Detective Harper looked directly at him.
"There's a room behind the wall.""
Adrian's throat tightened.
"Is it empty?""
"No.""
She opened a photograph on her phone and turned the screen toward him.
It showed a small room with a metal bed, a stained mattress, and a security camera mounted in the upper corner.
On the wall were dozens of scratches.
Some were marks counting days.
Others were names.
Adrian leaned closer.
One name appeared repeatedly.
*CHLOE.*
Below it, written in larger letters, was a sentence.
*SHE MUST NEVER KNOW WHAT HAPPENED THE FIRST TIME.*
Adrian stared at the photograph.
"What does that mean?""
Harper didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she showed him another picture.
A small child's drawing had been taped beneath the bed.
It showed a woman, a little girl, and a tall man standing beside a house.
The woman and child were holding hands.
The man had been crossed out with thick black lines.
On the back, someone had written a date.
The date was seven years earlier.
Adrian recognized the handwriting.
It belonged to his grandfather.
And beneath the date were six words:
*The truth about Chloe's real father.*
Adrian's knees nearly gave way.
"That's impossible.""
Detective Harper looked at him.
"Why?""
He stared at the photograph.
Because Chloe was his daughter.
He had been there when she was born.
He had held her in the hospital.
He had watched her take her first steps.
He had never questioned it.
But his grandfather's message suggested something else.
Something that had been hidden long before Vanessa entered their lives.
His phone suddenly rang.
An unknown number.
He answered.
"Hello?""
A woman's voice whispered through the speaker.
"Adrian, don't trust your father.""
"Who is this?""
"You need to find the original birth certificate.""
"Who are you?""
The woman began crying.
Then she said:
"Serena isn't the only person Richard Bennett buried.""
The call ended.
Adrian stared at the screen.
A moment later, a message appeared.
It contained a photograph of a hospital document.
At the top was Chloe's name.
May you like
But the space marked *Father's Name* contained someone else's.
*Richard Bennett.*
