Chapter 1: The Bride Who Knew Too Much

Vanessa's bouquet lay abandoned among the roses, but Adrian barely noticed it.
He was staring at the woman kneeling on the wedding aisle.
His former wife.
The mother of his daughter.
The woman everyone had told him was gone.
"Vanessa," Adrian repeated, his voice dangerously quiet.
"What did Serena just say?""
Vanessa blinked rapidly. Then she looked toward the guests, forcing a trembling smile onto her face.
"Adrian, darling, she's confused. Look at her. She's clearly not well.""
Serena tightened her grip around Chloe.
"Don't believe her.""
Adrian looked down at Serena. Her lips were cracked, her wrists bruised, and there was a dark mark near her temple.
"What happened to you?"" he asked.
Serena tried to answer, but her throat was too dry.
Chloe immediately reached for the small water bottle attached to her flower-girl basket.
"Mommy, drink this.""
Serena took two tiny sips.
"Thank you, sweetheart.""
Adrian looked at his daughter.
"Chloe, baby, how did you know your mother was in there?""
Chloe wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand.
"I heard her.""
"Heard her where?""
"Behind the flowers. Last night, when Vanessa told me to bring her some ribbons, I heard someone crying.""
Vanessa's expression changed.
"Chloe, stop making things up.""
The little girl flinched.
Adrian noticed.
He slowly stood.
"Don't speak to my daughter like that.""
Vanessa stared at him.
"Adrian, you're embarrassing me in front of everyone.""
"Embarrassing you?"" He glanced at Serena's wrists.
"My ex-wife is lying behind a flower wall at our wedding, and you're worried about being embarrassed?""
A murmur swept through the room.
The wedding planner hurried toward them, followed by two security guards.
"Mr. Bennett, we've called emergency services," the planner said.
"They should be here shortly.""
"Good. Nobody touches that structure.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"There's no reason to involve the police. This is a private family matter.""
Adrian turned toward her.
"Then explain it.""
She swallowed.
"Serena came here voluntarily.""
Serena lifted her head.
"That's a lie.""
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
"She has been unstable for years. You know that, Adrian. You were there when she disappeared.""
"I was there when you told me she abandoned us.""
The words came out slowly.
Adrian remembered that night.
Three years earlier, Serena had supposedly left their house after an argument. Her car had been found near the highway, unlocked and abandoned. Her phone had been switched off.
Vanessa had been the person who called him.
She had cried into his shoulder while telling him that Serena had probably run away with someone else.
Adrian had searched for months.
Then, eventually, he had accepted the story he had been given.
He had never imagined that Serena might still be alive.
And now she was lying on the floor of his wedding venue.
"Where have you been?"" he whispered.
Serena looked at him.
"Somewhere you couldn't find me.""
"Who kept you there?""
Her eyes moved toward Vanessa.
"She did.""
Vanessa let out a sharp, humorless laugh.
"This is ridiculous.""
Serena's fingers began trembling.
"Adrian, listen to me. She didn't just hide me. She made sure I couldn't contact you.""
"How?""
"She took my phone. My identification. Everything.""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"She was hospitalized. She needed help.""
"Then why was she locked behind a wall?"" Adrian snapped.
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Before she could answer, a man stepped out of the crowd.
Richard Bennett.
Adrian's sixty-seven-year-old father.
He wore a navy suit and a silver tie. He had been seated in the front row throughout the ceremony, looking every bit the proud father of the groom.
Now his expression was cold.
"Adrian, enough.""
Adrian turned.
"Dad?""
Richard approached them, adjusting his cuff links.
"This situation is getting out of hand. Serena is clearly suffering from some kind of breakdown. We should get her medical attention and handle everything else privately.""
Serena went completely still.
Her eyes widened.
"No.""
Chloe looked up at her mother.
"Mommy?""
Serena grabbed Adrian's sleeve.
"Don't let him near me.""
Adrian stared at his father.
"Why?""
Richard stopped walking.
"Because she is frightened and confused. I'm trying to help.""
"She just told me Vanessa imprisoned her.""
"She has always been dramatic.""
Serena began crying.
"No, Adrian. Please. You don't understand.""
Richard's face hardened.
"Serena, I suggest you stop before you make things worse for yourself.""
Adrian heard the threat hidden beneath those words.
So did Chloe.
The little girl stood up, placing herself between her grandfather and her mother.
"Don't talk to Mommy like that!""
Richard looked down at her.
"Chloe, go with Vanessa.""
"No!""
Vanessa immediately reached for the child's arm.
Chloe jerked away.
"Don't touch me!""
The entire room fell silent.
Adrian stepped between them.
"Nobody is taking my daughter.""
At that moment, two paramedics entered the ballroom carrying medical equipment.
"Where is the patient?""
"Here," Adrian answered.
They knelt beside Serena and began examining her.
One of them gently lifted her sleeve.
His expression changed when he saw the bruising around her wrist.
"Ma'am, can you tell me how you sustained these injuries?""
Serena looked at Vanessa.
"She tied me up.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"This is insane.""
The paramedic exchanged a glance with his colleague.
"We need to transport her immediately.""
Adrian nodded.
"I'm coming with her.""
Chloe grabbed his hand.
"Me too.""
"Of course, sweetheart.""
As the paramedics carefully lifted Serena onto the stretcher, a small object slipped from the folds of her dress.
It landed on the marble floor.
A silver necklace.
Adrian recognized it instantly.
He had given it to Serena on their tenth anniversary.
But something else caught his attention.
A tiny rectangular key was attached to the necklace by a thin metal ring.
Serena saw him staring.
"Adrian," she whispered.
"What?""
"That key...""
Her eyes moved toward Richard.
"Your father knows what it opens.""
Richard's face turned white.
And for the first time that afternoon, Adrian saw his father look genuinely afraid.
The ambulance doors closed twenty minutes later.
Adrian sat beside Serena while Chloe held her mother's hand.
Outside, the wedding guests were still gathering around the ballroom entrance. Some were recording videos. Others were calling relatives.
Adrian's phone had not stopped vibrating.
He ignored every call.
"Mommy?"" Chloe whispered.
Serena turned her head.
"Yes, sweetheart?""
"Are you coming home?""
Serena closed her eyes.
A tear slipped down her cheek.
"I hope so.""
Adrian reached for her hand.
"You are coming home. Both of you.""
Serena didn't respond.
She simply looked at him with an expression that made his stomach tighten.
It wasn't gratitude.
It was fear.
"Adrian," she whispered.
"You shouldn't have married her.""
He leaned closer.
"I didn't.""
Serena's fingers tightened around his.
"Not yet. But you almost did.""
The ambulance accelerated through traffic.
Then Serena said something that changed everything.
"Vanessa wasn't trying to marry you because she loved you.""
Adrian frowned.
"Then why?""
Serena stared at the ceiling.
"Because she needed access to something.""
"What?""
She turned toward him.
"Your father's inheritance.""
Before Adrian could ask another question, the paramedic called out.
"Sir, we need you to step back. Her blood pressure is dropping.""
Adrian moved aside.
Serena closed her eyes.
And the little silver key slipped from his fingers.
He picked it up.
For the first time, he noticed an inscription engraved along its narrow edge.
*B-17.*
He had no idea what it meant.
But when his phone vibrated again, he looked at the message on the screen.
It was from his father.
Do not let Serena tell you what happened in the basement.
Adrian stared at the words.
Then he slowly looked up.
May you like
His father had just admitted there was something to hide.
And he had never mentioned a basement.
