Chapter 5: The Dollhouse Nobody Was Allowed to Open

Chloe sat on the hospital bed with a stuffed rabbit in her lap.
Melissa was beside her, offering a packet of crackers.
When Adrian entered, Chloe immediately looked up.
"Daddy, can we go home?""
He sat beside her.
"Not yet, sweetheart. I need to ask you something.""
She nodded.
"Do you remember Grandma's dollhouse?""
Chloe's eyes widened.
"The big pink one?""
"Yes.""
"The one Vanessa threw away?""
Adrian nodded.
"Did you ever find anything inside it?""
Chloe looked at Melissa.
Then back at her father.
"Are you mad?""
"Why would I be mad?""
"Because I broke something.""
Adrian gently touched her shoulder.
"Sweetheart, you can tell me.""
Chloe reached into the pocket of her flower-girl dress.
She pulled out a tiny brass object.
Adrian stared.
It was a miniature key.
"Where did you get that?""
"Inside the dollhouse.""
"When?""
"Before the wedding.""
He examined it.
It was old, with a small number engraved near the handle.
*B-17.*
Adrian looked at her.
"Why did you take it?""
"Because Vanessa said the dollhouse was trash. But I knew Grandma loved it.""
"Did you open anything with this?""
Chloe nodded.
"There's a little door behind the mirror.""
Adrian's pulse quickened.
"What was inside?""
Chloe looked down.
"A box.""
"What kind of box?""
"Like a treasure box.""
Adrian turned toward Melissa.
"Did you know about this?""
Melissa shook her head.
Chloe continued.
"I wanted to show Mommy, but Vanessa said I wasn't allowed to touch the dollhouse anymore.""
"Where is the box now?""
Chloe hesitated.
"I gave it to someone.""
"Who?""
"The lady who helped me find Mommy.""
Adrian froze.
"What lady?""
Chloe pointed toward the corridor.
"The one with the red scarf.""
Adrian stood.
"Did she tell you her name?""
Chloe shook her head.
"She said she knew Grandma.""
Adrian immediately called Detective Harper.
The hospital's security team reviewed the footage again.
At 3:42 p.m., a woman wearing a red scarf entered through the east entrance.
She walked directly toward the children's waiting area.
At 3:51 p.m., she left carrying a small package.
The package appeared to be wrapped in pink tissue paper.
Harper studied the footage.
"Do you recognize her?""
Adrian shook his head.
"No.""
"Could she be Evelyn Carter?""
"I don't know.""
The detective zoomed in.
The woman turned slightly toward the camera.
Her face was visible for less than two seconds.
Then Adrian noticed something.
A small silver brooch pinned to her scarf.
It was shaped like a rose.
He had seen it before.
On his grandfather's former housekeeper.
"Margaret," he whispered.
Harper turned.
"Who?""
"Margaret Ellis. She worked for my grandfather for almost thirty years.""
"Where is she now?""
"She retired after he died.""
"Do you have her address?""
Adrian nodded.
But before he could search his contacts, his phone rang.
Margaret.
He answered immediately.
"Margaret?""
A trembling voice came through.
"Mr. Bennett, I have something that belongs to your family.""
"The box?""
Silence.
Then she whispered:
"Your grandfather made me promise I would give it to Chloe when she was old enough to understand.""
Adrian closed his eyes.
"Where are you?""
"At the old estate.""
"Get out of there.""
"I can't.""
"Why?""
"Because your father is here.""
The call ended.
Adrian didn't wait for permission.
He grabbed his coat and headed toward the hospital entrance.
Detective Harper followed.
"Mr. Bennett!""
He turned.
"Margaret is alone with my father.""
"We have officers on the way.""
"Then I'm going.""
"You're not entering that property without police protection.""
Adrian stopped.
For once, he listened.
Within twenty minutes, two patrol cars and an unmarked vehicle were heading toward the Bennett estate.
The property stood behind tall iron gates, surrounded by mature oak trees and carefully maintained gardens.
Adrian hadn't been there since his grandfather's funeral.
The house looked exactly the same.
White stone columns.
Dark wooden shutters.
A fountain in the center of the driveway.
But something felt different.
The front gate was open.
And the lights inside were on.
Harper instructed the officers to approach from the side entrance.
Adrian followed them.
They found Margaret in the old library.
She was sitting in a chair with her hands folded in her lap.
A small wooden box rested on the table.
Richard stood behind her.
Daniel Price was beside the fireplace.
And Vanessa was near the window.
Adrian stopped in the doorway.
"Move away from her.""
Richard turned.
"Adrian.""
Vanessa's expression flickered.
"Darling, thank God you're here.""
Adrian looked at her.
"Don't call me that.""
Richard stepped forward.
"This is a private family matter.""
Detective Harper entered behind Adrian.
"Not anymore, Mr. Bennett.""
Richard's jaw tightened.
"Detective, I can explain everything.""
"Then you'll have an opportunity to do so.""
Margaret stood slowly.
"Mr. Adrian, your grandfather wanted you to have this.""
She pushed the wooden box across the table.
Vanessa immediately moved toward it.
One of the officers stepped in front of her.
"Don't touch it.""
Richard glared at Margaret.
"You were instructed to destroy that.""
Margaret's chin lifted.
"Your father was a better man than you, Richard.""
Richard slapped his palm against the table.
"Be quiet!""
Adrian moved between them.
"Don't you dare threaten her.""
Margaret opened the box.
Inside were several sealed envelopes, a small flash drive, and a thick leather folder.
Adrian recognized his grandfather's handwriting on the first envelope.
*For Adrian. Open only when the truth can no longer be hidden.*
His hands trembled as he broke the seal.
The letter was dated four years earlier.
My dear Adrian,
If you are reading this, then I have failed to protect the family from the person I feared most.
Your father has been manipulating the family trust. He believes that controlling the inheritance will give him power over everyone.
He has also discovered that Serena knows the truth about the original beneficiary agreement.
Do not trust any document presented to you by Richard or his attorney.
The most important thing you need to know concerns Chloe.
Adrian stopped reading.
He looked toward Richard.
His father had gone pale.
Vanessa moved closer.
"Adrian, don't believe everything in that letter.""
He ignored her.
He continued.
Chloe is your biological daughter. The original records are included in the folder.
However, the most dangerous secret is not her parentage.
Adrian's eyes moved to the next line.
It is the identity of the person who arranged Serena's disappearance.
He looked up.
Richard was staring at the letter.
Then the older man did something unexpected.
He laughed.
Not loudly.
Not nervously.
He simply laughed as if the entire situation amused him.
"Your grandfather was a senile old man," Richard said.
Adrian turned another page.
There was a photocopy of a bank transfer.
The amount was enormous.
The recipient was a private security company.
The payment date matched the night Serena disappeared.
And beneath the transaction was a handwritten authorization.
Richard Bennett.
But there was another signature.
Adrian recognized it immediately.
Daniel Price.
Harper took the document.
"Mr. Price, you'll need to explain this.""
Daniel stepped backward.
"That document is fabricated.""
Margaret shook her head.
"I watched him sign it.""
Richard pointed at her.
"You were paid to keep your mouth shut.""
"I was paid to work for your father. Not to help you imprison an innocent woman.""
Vanessa suddenly reached for the flash drive.
Adrian caught her wrist.
"Don't.""
She struggled.
"Give it to me!""
An officer moved forward and separated them.
Vanessa's perfect composure finally broke.
"You don't understand what you're doing!""
Adrian stared at her.
"I understand that you helped destroy my family.""
She laughed bitterly.
"Your family was destroyed long before I arrived.""
Richard turned toward her.
"Vanessa, shut your mouth.""
But she was already looking at Adrian.
"You think your father is the villain? Ask him why he needed Serena gone.""
Adrian's expression hardened.
"What does that mean?""
Vanessa looked directly into his eyes.
"Because Serena knew what happened to your grandfather the night he died.""
The room fell silent.
Adrian felt his heart pound.
"My grandfather died of a stroke.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"That's what the death certificate says.""
Richard lunged toward her.
"Enough!""
Two officers restrained him.
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
"Your grandfather didn't die naturally.""
Adrian stared at her.
"Who killed him?""
Vanessa's eyes moved toward Richard.
Then she whispered:
"Your father.""
The flash drive was taken into police custody.
Margaret was escorted to a separate room for questioning.
Richard and Daniel were detained pending further investigation.
Vanessa was also taken into custody.
But before the officers led her away, she turned toward Adrian.
"There's something you should know.""
He said nothing.
"Your grandfather left a second letter.""
"Where?""
Vanessa smiled faintly.
"With the woman who delivered the original birth certificate.""
Adrian frowned.
"Who?""
Vanessa leaned closer.
"Your mother.""
Adrian went completely still.
His mother had died when he was twelve.
At least, that was what he had always believed.
But Vanessa was looking at him with a strange certainty.
"She didn't die in that car accident, Adrian.""
Then she was escorted out.
That night, Adrian returned to the hospital.
Serena was awake.
Chloe was asleep beside her, one hand resting on her mother's blanket.
Adrian stood in the doorway.
Serena looked up.
"Did you find the box?""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
"And?""
"Richard was arrested.""
Serena closed her eyes.
For a moment, she seemed to release a breath she had been holding for years.
Then Adrian approached the bed.
"Vanessa said something.""
Serena looked at him.
"What?""
"She said my mother didn't die in the accident.""
Serena's expression changed instantly.
"Adrian...""
He stared at her.
"You knew?""
Serena's eyes filled with tears.
"I was told not to tell you.""
"By whom?""
She looked toward Chloe.
Then she whispered:
"Your mother is alive.""
Adrian felt the floor disappear beneath him.
"Where?""
Serena reached beneath her pillow.
She pulled out a folded photograph.
It showed an elderly woman sitting in a garden.
Her hair was silver.
Her face was thinner.
But Adrian recognized her eyes immediately.
On the back was a handwritten message.
*Tell my son that I never abandoned him.*
Adrian stared at the photograph.
May you like
Then Serena said the words he had never imagined hearing.
"Your mother has been watching over Chloe.""
