Chapter 2: The Secret Beneath the House

The emergency room smelled of disinfectant and stale coffee.

Adrian sat outside the examination room with Chloe curled against his side.

She had stopped crying, but every few minutes she reached for his hand as if checking whether he was still there.

"Is Mommy going to die?"" she asked.

Adrian swallowed.

"No, sweetheart.""

"Promise?""

He kissed the top of her head.

"I promise I'll do everything I can to keep her safe.""

A nurse approached with a clipboard.

"Mr. Bennett?""

"Yes?""

"Your wife is conscious. The doctor would like to speak with you.""

Adrian stood immediately.

Chloe jumped up too.

"Can I see her?""

"Just for a moment," the nurse replied.

Inside the room, Serena looked painfully small beneath the white hospital blanket.

An IV was attached to her arm. A monitor beeped beside the bed.

But her eyes brightened when Chloe entered.

"There you are.""

Chloe rushed toward her.

"Mommy!""

Serena opened her arms carefully, allowing the girl to hug her without disturbing the IV.

"I missed you so much.""

"I missed you more.""

"That's impossible.""

Chloe managed a tiny smile.

Adrian stood near the door, watching them.

For three years, he had watched his daughter fall asleep holding an old photograph of her mother.

He had told Chloe that Serena needed time.

He had told himself the same thing.

Now he understood that someone had stolen those years from them.

The doctor entered a moment later.

"I'm Dr. Collins. Your former wife is severely dehydrated and malnourished. She also has injuries consistent with prolonged physical restraint.""

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"How long?""

"That's difficult to determine without further examinations. But this doesn't appear to be a recent incident.""

"Can she speak to the police?""

"Not immediately. She needs rest.""

Serena turned toward the doctor.

"I need to tell him something.""

Dr. Collins looked at her carefully.

"Only if you feel strong enough.""

"I do.""

Adrian moved closer.

"Tell me.""

Serena glanced at Chloe.

"Not in front of her.""

Chloe immediately shook her head.

"I'm not a baby, Mommy.""

"I know, sweetheart. But some things are too frightening for children.""

Adrian crouched beside her.

"How about you wait with Aunt Melissa?""

His sister, Melissa Bennett, had arrived at the hospital fifteen minutes earlier.

Chloe looked reluctant.

"Will you stay with Mommy?""

"I won't leave her.""

After Chloe left, Serena stared at the closed door.

Then she began.

"Vanessa contacted me six months ago.""

Adrian frowned.

"Six months? I thought you disappeared three years ago.""

"I did. But I managed to escape.""

He went completely still.

"What?""

Serena swallowed.

"Three weeks ago, I got out of the place where they were keeping me. I found a phone and called your office. Vanessa answered.""

Adrian felt cold.

"What did she say?""

"She told me Chloe was happy. She said you had moved on. Then she offered me money to disappear permanently.""

"And you refused?""

Serena nodded.

"I told her I wanted my daughter.""

Adrian clenched his fists.

"Then what?""

"She invited me to meet her at an apartment. She said she would arrange a private meeting with Chloe.""

"Why would you trust her?""

"I didn't. But I was desperate.""

Serena's voice cracked.

"When I arrived, two men were waiting. They took my bag, covered my head, and brought me somewhere else.""

Adrian gripped the edge of the chair.

"Where?""

"I don't know the address. But I recognized the building.""

"Which building?""

Serena hesitated.

"Your father's old estate.""

Adrian stared at her.

The Bennett family estate stood on several acres outside the city. Richard had lived there for decades before moving into a luxury condominium.

It had a main house, a guest cottage, and an underground wine cellar.

There was also an old service basement.

Adrian hadn't visited in years.

"You're saying my father was involved?""

Serena closed her eyes.

"I heard his voice.""

"Are you sure?""

"I heard him arguing with Vanessa.""

"What did they say?""

Serena took a shaky breath.

"He told her that keeping me alive was becoming too dangerous.""

Adrian felt the room tilt.

"And Vanessa?""

"She said she needed another week. She said once you signed the marriage documents, everything would be settled.""

Adrian's stomach tightened.

"Marriage documents?""

Serena nodded.

"She mentioned a trust.""

The word struck him.

His grandfather had established a family trust decades earlier. It contained several properties, investments, and a controlling interest in Bennett Holdings.

Adrian had inherited the management rights when his grandfather died.

But one condition had always been attached.

He needed to remain legally married and maintain a family residence until his daughter turned eighteen.

If he died before that date, the controlling shares would pass to Chloe.

Adrian had never thought much about it.

He certainly hadn't thought Vanessa knew the details.

"Why would she care about the trust?"" he asked.

Serena looked directly at him.

"Because Richard promised her something.""

"What?""

"Your father's share.""

Adrian shook his head.

"My father doesn't control my inheritance.""

"Not directly. But he has been trying to change the trust for years.""

Serena reached for the necklace on the bedside table.

"That's why I kept this.""

She lifted the silver chain.

"Your grandfather gave me this when Chloe was born. He said there was something important attached to it.""

Adrian picked up the little key.

"B-17.""

Serena nodded.

"He told me that if anything ever happened to him, I should keep it somewhere safe.""

Adrian stared at her.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"I tried.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Your father intercepted my letters. He told me you had signed divorce papers. He showed me photographs of you and Vanessa together.""

Adrian shook his head.

"I never signed anything.""

"I know that now.""

He sat beside her.

"Serena, I never stopped looking for you.""

She gave him a sad smile.

"Then why did you stop?""

He had no answer.

Because he had believed the police reports.

Because Vanessa had convinced him that Serena had left voluntarily.

Because he had been exhausted and grieving and wanted to believe that his daughter would eventually have a stable family again.

Because believing a lie had been easier than questioning everyone around him.

"I'm sorry," he whispered.

Serena turned away.

"Don't apologize until you understand what happened.""

Before he could respond, his phone rang.

Richard.

Adrian stared at the screen.

Then he answered.

"What do you want?""

His father's voice was controlled.

"Where are you?""

"Hospital.""

"Good. Is Serena stable?""

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"How do you know she's at the hospital?""

Silence.

Then Richard cleared his throat.

"Vanessa called me.""

"Of course she did.""

"Adrian, listen carefully. You need to bring Serena home and keep her away from the police until we understand what she's saying.""

"Why?""

"Because this could destroy the family.""

Adrian laughed bitterly.

"You mean it could destroy you.""

Richard's voice hardened.

"Don't be childish.""

"Tell me what B-17 opens.""

The silence that followed was different.

Longer.

Heavier.

"What did you say?""

"The key. What does it open?""

Richard exhaled sharply.

"Where did you get that?""

"Serena had it.""

"Give it to me.""

"No.""

"Adrian, you have no idea what you're dealing with.""

"Then explain it.""

Richard lowered his voice.

"That key belongs to a private archive. Your grandfather kept documents there that were never meant to be seen.""

Adrian glanced at Serena.

"What documents?""

"Family business records.""

"Why did you tell Vanessa about them?""

A pause.

Then Richard said something that made Adrian's blood run cold.

"Because Vanessa was supposed to find them before Serena did.""

The call disconnected.

Adrian lowered the phone.

Serena had heard enough.

"Now you understand.""

He stared at her.

"There's more, isn't there?""

She nodded.

"Your father didn't just help Vanessa hide me.""

"What else?""

Serena looked toward the hospital door.

"He was the one who ordered them to take me three years ago.""

An hour later, Detective Harper arrived.

She was in her early forties, with short brown hair and a tired expression that suggested she had already heard too many terrible stories.

She introduced herself, then placed a recorder on the bedside table.

"Mrs. Bennett, I understand you were found concealed inside a wedding decoration.""

Serena nodded.

"Yes.""

"And you believe Vanessa Cole arranged your confinement?""

"Yes.""

"Do you have any evidence?""

Serena looked at Adrian.

"The necklace.""

Detective Harper examined the silver chain and key.

"Anything else?""

Serena hesitated.

Then she reached beneath the blanket.

A tiny folded piece of paper emerged from the pocket sewn inside her dress.

Adrian stared.

"What's that?""

"A note.""

Serena handed it to the detective.

The paper was yellowed and creased.

On it, someone had written a short message in black ink.

*If Serena ever escapes, do not let her reach B-17.*

Below the message was a signature.

Richard Bennett.

Detective Harper photographed the note.

"Where did you get this?""

Serena swallowed.

"It was hidden inside the basement wall.""

Adrian felt his chest tighten.

The detective looked at him.

"Mr. Bennett, does your family own a property with an underground basement?""

"Yes.""

"Where?""

Adrian gave her the address.

She wrote it down.

Then she looked at Serena.

"There's one more thing I need to ask.""

Serena nodded.

"Three years ago, when you disappeared, did anyone else know where you were being held?""

Serena's face changed.

She looked toward the door.

"Yes.""

"Who?""

Serena's lips trembled.

"Your daughter.""

Adrian froze.

"Chloe?""

May you like

Serena began crying.

"She was there.""
