Chapter 6: The Mother Who Never Died

Adrian couldn't stop looking at the photograph.

The woman in the garden was older than he remembered, but there was no mistaking her.

His mother.

Eleanor Bennett.

The woman he had buried in his memory twenty-eight years earlier.

He had attended her funeral.

He remembered the black coffin, the white flowers, and his father holding his shoulder while telling him to be strong.

He remembered asking to see her one last time.

Richard had refused.

He had said the accident had left her too badly injured.

For years, Adrian had accepted that explanation.

Now he was being told that she had never died.

"Where is she?"" he asked.

Serena looked down.

"I don't know her current address.""

"Who gave you this photograph?""

"Your grandfather.""

Adrian sat on the edge of the bed.

"When?""

"Two weeks before he died.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I was already being watched.""

He looked at her.

"Serena, I need the whole truth.""

She nodded slowly.

"Your mother discovered that Richard was stealing money from the family business. She confronted him. He threatened her.""

"About what?""

"The company accounts. The offshore transfers. The forged signatures.""

Adrian rubbed his forehead.

"That sounds like something Richard would do.""

"Your mother wanted to report him. But your grandfather begged her to wait until he could gather enough evidence.""

"Then the accident?""

Serena swallowed.

"Your mother was driving home one evening when a truck forced her off the road. The car went down an embankment.""

Adrian closed his eyes.

"I remember the funeral.""

"There was no body.""

He opened his eyes.

"What?""

"Richard told everyone the body had been recovered, but your mother was transported to a private medical facility under another name.""

Adrian stared at her.

"Who helped her?""

"Your grandfather.""

"Why?""

"Because he knew Richard would try again.""

Adrian stood and paced toward the window.

"So my father let me believe my mother was dead?""

Serena nodded.

"Yes.""

"For twenty-eight years?""

Her silence was enough.

Adrian placed both hands against the windowsill.

He wanted to scream.

He wanted to drive to the police station and demand that Richard tell him everything.

Instead, he stood there, staring at his reflection.

A man in an expensive suit.

A man who had nearly married a woman who helped imprison his former wife.

A man whose daughter had been threatened inside her own family home.

A man who had spent half his life believing lies.

Behind him, Serena spoke softly.

"Adrian?""

He turned.

"Yes?""

"Your mother asked me to tell you something.""

"What?""

"She said she never stopped loving you.""

Adrian's eyes filled.

He sat beside Serena again.

For the first time since the wedding, he allowed himself to cry.

The next morning, Detective Harper arrived with an update.

"Richard is being questioned," she said.

"Daniel Price has requested legal counsel. Vanessa is cooperating, but we don't trust her statements without corroboration.""

Adrian looked up.

"Cooperating?""

"She claims Richard planned Serena's disappearance and manipulated her into helping.""

Serena gave a bitter laugh.

"She was never manipulated.""

Harper nodded.

"We're investigating both of them.""

Adrian handed her the photograph of Eleanor.

"Can you find her?""

Harper examined it.

"Where was this taken?""

"I don't know.""

"Do you have any other information?""

Serena reached for the photograph.

She pointed to a small sign in the background.

A wooden plaque beside a garden gate.

Harper enlarged the image.

The lettering was faint.

But visible.

*HARBOR LIGHTS RESIDENCE.*

"That's a care facility," Harper said.

Adrian frowned.

"Why would my mother be living there?""

Serena shook her head.

"Your grandfather arranged it. He told me it was a place where she could stay safely.""

Harper made a note.

"We'll locate it.""

Adrian looked toward Chloe.

She was still sleeping.

"Can I see her before you leave?""

Harper nodded.

"Of course.""

Chloe woke just before noon.

She rubbed her eyes and looked around.

"Daddy?""

Adrian smiled.

"Good morning, princess.""

"Where's Mommy?""

"Right here.""

Serena opened her arms.

Chloe crawled onto the bed and hugged her.

Then she looked at Adrian.

"Are we going to see Grandma?""

He hesitated.

"What?""

"Grandma Eleanor.""

Adrian stared at her.

"Who told you about Grandma Eleanor?""

Chloe shrugged.

"The lady with the red scarf.""

Adrian's heart began racing.

"What did she tell you?""

"She said Grandma was waiting for me.""

Serena looked alarmed.

"Chloe, when did she say that?""

"Before the wedding.""

Adrian leaned closer.

"Did she give you anything?""

Chloe nodded.

She reached beneath her pillow and pulled out a small folded piece of paper.

"I was saving it.""

Adrian unfolded it.

A handwritten address appeared.

Below it was a short sentence.

*If Adrian finally learns the truth, bring him here.*

Adrian looked at Serena.

"That's the facility?""

Serena nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

At 2:15 p.m., Detective Harper received confirmation.

Eleanor Bennett was alive.

She had been living under a protected identity at Harbor Lights Residence for twenty-eight years.

Her records showed that she had entered the facility following a severe traumatic injury.

The admission paperwork listed her next of kin as a private trust.

Not Richard Bennett.

Not Adrian.

His grandfather.

Harper arranged a supervised visit.

Adrian insisted on going immediately.

Serena remained at the hospital with Chloe until doctors cleared her for transport.

Melissa promised to stay with them.

Before Adrian left, Chloe caught his hand.

"Daddy?""

"Yes, sweetheart?""

"Will Grandma remember me?""

Adrian crouched.

"She's never met you, baby.""

Chloe looked disappointed.

"Then how does she know about me?""

He smiled sadly.

"Because she's your grandmother. And she's been waiting a very long time.""

Harbor Lights Residence stood on a quiet road near the coast.

It was a beautiful building with pale stone walls, large windows, and a garden filled with white roses.

Adrian stepped out of the car.

For several seconds, he couldn't move.

He had imagined this moment thousands of times as a child.

In some dreams, his mother came home.

In others, she appeared at his school.

Sometimes she was standing in the kitchen, making breakfast as if nothing had happened.

But every dream ended the same way.

He woke up alone.

A woman named Dr. Rebecca Miles greeted them at the entrance.

"Mr. Bennett?""

"Yes.""

"I'm the facility director. Your mother has been informed you're coming.""

Adrian swallowed.

"Does she know who I am?""

Dr. Miles smiled gently.

"She asked us to make sure we had the right Adrian Bennett before she agreed to the visit.""

He almost laughed.

"That sounds like her.""

The director led him through a quiet hallway.

They passed a lounge, a small library, and a room where several residents were playing cards.

Finally, she stopped outside a garden-facing bedroom.

"She's inside.""

Adrian stared at the door.

"Is she... well?""

"Physically, she's stable. Emotionally, there are difficult memories. Please let her set the pace.""

He nodded.

The director opened the door.

A woman sat near the window.

Her silver hair was neatly brushed. A pale blue cardigan rested over her shoulders.

She was looking at a photograph.

Adrian recognized the picture.

It was taken on his tenth birthday.

He was standing between his mother and father, holding a chocolate cake.

The woman slowly looked up.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then her lips parted.

"Adrian?""

He couldn't answer.

She stood, gripping the edge of the table.

"My baby.""

His legs finally moved.

He crossed the room and fell into her arms.

"Mom.""

Eleanor held him tightly.

She pressed her cheek against his shoulder and began sobbing.

"I thought I'd never see you again.""

Adrian held her as if he were twelve years old.

"Why didn't you come home?""

Eleanor pulled back.

Her eyes were wet.

"Because your father told me you were better off without me.""

Adrian stared at her.

"He said you were dead.""

Eleanor closed her eyes.

"I know.""

"Why?""

She looked toward the window.

"Because Richard threatened to kill you if I ever contacted you.""

Adrian stepped back.

"He threatened his own son?""

"Your father was never the man you thought he was.""

Eleanor reached for his face.

"I tried to get away. I tried to report him. But every time I made a move, someone appeared at your school or outside your house.""

Adrian felt sick.

"Did Grandfather know?""

"He knew everything.""

"Then why didn't he tell me?""

Eleanor's expression softened.

"Because he was trying to protect you.""

She walked slowly toward the small cabinet beside her bed.

From a locked drawer, she removed a brown envelope.

"I kept this for you.""

Adrian took it.

Inside was a photograph of a much younger Richard standing beside a woman Adrian had never seen.

The woman was holding a baby.

On the back was written:

*Richard, Vanessa, and the child who started everything.*

Adrian stared at the photograph.

"Who is this woman?""

Eleanor's face tightened.

"Vanessa's mother.""

"And the baby?""

She looked at him.

"Vanessa.""

Adrian frowned.

"Why would my father be standing with Vanessa's mother?""

Eleanor sat down.

"Because Richard had known her long before he introduced Vanessa to our family.""

Adrian felt a chill.

"How long?""

"Since before you were born.""

He stared at her.

"Are you saying Vanessa knew my father when she was a child?""

Eleanor nodded.

"She grew up believing Richard was her father.""

Adrian looked at the photograph again.

"Was he?""

Eleanor didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she opened another envelope.

Inside was a laboratory report.

The document carried the name of a private medical laboratory.

The date was twenty-five years earlier.

And the results showed a biological relationship between Richard Bennett and Vanessa Cole.

Adrian looked up.

"She's his daughter?""

Eleanor nodded.

"Yes.""

Adrian felt the room spin.

Vanessa hadn't simply wanted to marry into the Bennett family.

She had wanted to take control of it from the inside.

But one detail didn't make sense.

"Why would my father arrange for his own daughter to marry me?""

Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.

"Because he didn't want you to inherit the company.""

She leaned forward.

"And there is something else you need to understand.""

Adrian waited.

"Richard didn't just arrange Vanessa's marriage to you.""

She looked directly into his eyes.

"He arranged for you to fall in love with her.""

Adrian stared.

"What?""

"She was placed in your life years ago. Every friendship, every introduction, every coincidence. It was planned.""

He shook his head.

"That's impossible.""

Eleanor reached for his hand.

"Your father wanted Vanessa close enough to influence you, but not close enough for you to discover who she really was.""

Adrian thought about the years of dinners, family gatherings, and carefully timed encounters.

He remembered Vanessa appearing at a charity event the night Serena had canceled.

He remembered her offering comfort after Serena disappeared.

He remembered how quickly she had become Chloe's favorite babysitter.

It had all seemed natural.

Now it felt rehearsed.

"Why tell me this now?""

Eleanor's expression changed.

"Because I received a message this morning.""

She handed him a small note.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

But the message was clear.

*The girl knows about the second child. Stop her before she speaks.*

Adrian looked at his mother.

"What second child?""

Eleanor's hands began trembling.

"Serena had another baby.""

Adrian's blood ran cold.

"Another baby?""

"Yes.""

"With whom?""

Eleanor stared at him.

Then she whispered:

"With you.""

Adrian returned to the hospital just before sunset.

He barely remembered the drive.

His mind kept returning to Eleanor's words.

Another child.

A child he had never known existed.

A child Serena had supposedly lost.

When he entered the hospital room, Serena was awake.

Chloe was drawing beside her.

Serena looked at his face and immediately understood.

"You saw Eleanor.""

Adrian nodded.

"She told me about the second baby.""

The pencil slipped from Chloe's hand.

Serena closed her eyes.

Adrian approached the bed.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Serena began crying.

"Because Richard told me the baby was dead.""

Adrian stopped.

"What?""

"He said the child died shortly after birth.""

"When?""

"Four years ago.""

Adrian looked at her.

"That's impossible. You were already gone.""

Serena shook her head.

"No, Adrian. I was still being held when I gave birth.""

He felt his chest tighten.

"Where is the baby now?""

Serena covered her mouth.

"I don't know.""

Adrian took her hand.

"Serena, look at me.""

She slowly raised her eyes.

"Did Richard take our child?""

She nodded.

Then she whispered:

"He told me the baby was a boy.""

Adrian stared at her.

"Do you know his name?""

Serena's voice broke.

"Yes.""

She reached beneath her pillow and pulled out a folded hospital bracelet.

Adrian unfolded it.

The bracelet was faded, but the name remained visible.

*NOAH BENNETT.*

Below it was a date.

And beneath the date, written in a different hand, were four words.

*Transferred to private care.*

Adrian looked up.

"Who took him?""

Serena began shaking.

"Vanessa.""

At that exact moment, Detective Harper burst through the door.

"Mr. Bennett, we have a problem.""

Adrian turned.

"What happened?""

Harper held up her phone.

"We've just received security footage from the estate.""

She pressed play.

The video showed Richard entering the basement with a woman carrying a baby.

Adrian moved closer.

The woman turned toward the camera.

It was Vanessa.

And the baby in her arms was wearing a hospital bracelet.

Harper paused the footage.

"Mr. Bennett, we believe your son may still be alive.""

Adrian stared at the screen.

Then he noticed the timestamp.

The video had been recorded only three hours earlier.

And Richard was holding a small suitcase.

*He wasn't hiding the past anymore. He was preparing to disappear with the child.*
