Chapter 9: The Daughter I Forgot

I didn't speak for a long time.

I couldn't.

Because sometimes the truth doesn't hurt because it's painful.

It hurts because your mind refuses to accept it.

I had spent years believing I knew my story.

My childhood.

My marriage.

My daughter.

My memories.

But now Vanessa was standing in front of me telling me that my own memories were incomplete.

"You were there," she repeated.

I shook my head.

"No.""

"You were.""

"I would remember.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"You don't.""

I stared.

"What does that mean?""

Vanessa looked at the journal.

"You had an accident.""

The words were quiet.

But they hit hard.

"When?""

"After Lily was born.""

I felt dizzy.

"What kind of accident?""

"A car accident.""

The officer exchanged a look with another officer.

Vanessa continued.

"You survived.""

I touched my head without thinking.

There was a scar.

A small scar near my temple.

A scar I never questioned.

"You told me you got that as a kid.""

Vanessa nodded.

"I know.""

"Why?""

"Because that's what your parents wanted everyone to believe.""

My breathing became uneven.

"Why would they lie?""

Vanessa looked at me.

"Because you forgot.""

The word echoed.

Forgot.

Not lost.

Not changed.

Forgot.

The memories were somewhere inside me.

Buried.

Waiting.

The officer spoke carefully.

"Mr. Carter, sometimes severe trauma can cause memory loss.""

I looked at him.

"Are you saying I forgot my own daughter?""

Vanessa started crying.

"No.""

I turned to her.

"What?""

"You forgot the years before.""

She stepped closer.

"You remembered loving Lily. You remembered raising her. But you forgot how she came into your life.""

I looked toward the car.

Lily was sitting inside with a police officer.

She was watching me.

Waiting.

I couldn't let her see me fall apart.

"What happened to Emily?""

Vanessa looked down.

"She died.""

The answer was simple.

Too simple.

"When?""

"The same accident.""

My chest tightened.

"And Mark?""

"He was there.""

I froze.

"What?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Mark knew about the accident.""

"Why?""

"Because he caused it.""

The anger returned instantly.

"He tried to kill me?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

Vanessa looked at me.

"Because Emily found out what he had been doing.""

The pieces started connecting.

The threats.

The recordings.

The obsession.

Mark wasn't trying to expose us.

He was trying to erase the past.

"What did he do?""

Vanessa looked terrified.

"Emily discovered Mark had been stealing from the family business.""

I listened.

"She threatened to report him.""

"And then?""

"He followed her.""

My hands curled into fists.

"The accident.""

Vanessa nodded.

"But Mark didn't expect you to survive.""

I looked at the journal.

"And Lily?""

"He wanted to take her.""

My stomach turned.

"Why?""

"Because he thought she was his.""

I shook my head.

"But she isn't.""

Vanessa looked at me.

"No.""

A long silence.

Then she said:

"She was never Mark's daughter.""

I froze.

"What?""

Vanessa looked at Lily.

"Mark lied.""

My heart pounded.

"Then whose daughter is she?""

Vanessa reached into her bag.

She pulled out an old envelope.

"I found this after Mark came back.""

I opened it.

Inside was a DNA report.

My hands shook as I read the words.

Probability of paternity: 99.99%.

I stared.

My eyes burned.

Daniel Carter.

Biological father.

Lily was mine.

My daughter.

All this time.

She had always been mine.

I covered my face.

A sound escaped me.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Relief.

A lifetime of fear disappeared in one second.

Behind me, Lily opened the car door.

"Dad?""

I turned.

She ran toward me.

I caught her.

Held her.

And for the first time in days, I didn't feel like I was losing everything.

I felt like I had found something.

But then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Only breathing.

Then Mark's voice.

"You finally remembered.""

My blood went cold.

"Where are you?""

A quiet laugh.

"Closer than you think.""

I looked around.

The police immediately moved.

"Mark!""

His voice became serious.

"You think this ends because you found out Lily is yours?""

I tightened my grip on my daughter.

"What do you want?""

A pause.

Then:

"The truth.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"What truth?""

Mark whispered:

"The truth about who really caused the accident.""

The call ended.

And behind me, one of the officers shouted:

"Everyone down!""

I turned.

A figure was standing near the edge of the warehouse.

Watching us.

Holding something in his hand.

A recorder.

And then he said:

"Daniel...""

My entire body froze.

May you like

Because the voice that answered him wasn't Mark's.

It was mine.
