Chapter 6: The Hospital File
I didn't sleep.
None of us did.
The police searched the house until sunrise.
They collected the hidden phone.
The recorders.
Everything they thought could prove what happened.
But there was one thing they couldn't explain.
Why Mark kept mentioning the night Lily was born.
By morning, I had a decision to make.
I could walk away.
I had every reason to.
My wife lied to me.
My daughter wasn't biologically mine.
A man from Vanessa's past had been stalking my family.
My entire life felt like it had been built on a foundation I never saw.
But then Lily walked into the kitchen wearing my old baseball shirt.
The one she stole from my closet because she said it smelled like me.
"Dad?""
I looked up.
"Yeah?""
"Are we still a family?""
That question destroyed every wall I had built.
I put down my coffee.
"Lily, come here.""
She climbed into my lap.
"I don't care about blood.""
Her eyes searched mine.
"I don't?""
"No.""
I touched her hair.
"You're my daughter because I raised you. Because I loved you. Because every day for eight years, you were my little girl.""
She hugged me.
And for a moment, everything was quiet.
Then Vanessa walked in.
She looked exhausted.
"I found something.""
She placed an envelope on the table.
"What is that?""
"A copy of the hospital records.""
I stared at it.
"You kept them?""
"I kept everything.""
"Why?""
"Because I knew someday the truth would come out.""
I opened the envelope.
Inside were several documents.
The first page was Lily's birth certificate.
I already knew what it would say.
Then I saw something strange.
A handwritten note attached to the file.
My name.
Daniel Carter.
The handwriting wasn't Vanessa's.
"What is this?""
Vanessa looked nervous.
"I found it years ago.""
I read the note.
It was from the doctor.
My eyebrows pulled together.
"This doesn't make sense.""
"What?""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Why is my name here?""
She went silent.
I flipped through the papers.
Then I saw the date.
The exact date of Lily's birth.
My hands went cold.
Because there was something I had never considered.
Something nobody had ever told me.
I looked at Vanessa.
"When did we meet?""
She frowned.
"What?""
"When did we meet?""
"Three months after Lily was born.""
I stared at the papers.
"No.""
Her face changed.
"What?""
I held up the document.
"That's impossible.""
The hospital file showed something I couldn't understand.
A signature.
My signature.
Three months before I met Vanessa.
"Daniel...""
I looked at her.
"Why is my signature on Lily's birth records?""
Vanessa's face drained of color.
"I don't know.""
For the first time, she looked genuinely shocked.
Not afraid.
Not guilty.
Confused.
The front door suddenly opened.
We both turned.
A police officer stood there.
"Mr. Carter?""
I stood.
"Yes?""
He held a folder.
"We found something during the investigation.""
"What?""
He looked between me and Vanessa.
"We identified Mark's location.""
My heart started pounding.
"Where?""
The officer hesitated.
"He was at the hospital.""
"What hospital?""
He opened the folder.
"The same hospital where Lily was born.""
A cold silence filled the room.
Then he handed me another photograph.
It showed Mark standing beside a newborn baby.
And behind him was a nurse holding a file.
A file with my name on it.
The officer lowered his voice.
"Mr. Carter...""
I looked at him.
"There's something you need to know.""
"What?""
He took a breath.
"Mark wasn't trying to prove Lily wasn't your daughter.""
I stared.
"Then what was he trying to prove?""
The officer looked down at the photo.
"He was trying to prove that someone changed Lily's birth records.""
I felt the ground disappear beneath me.
Because if that was true...
May you like
Then the biggest lie in my life wasn't about who Lily's father was.
It was about who I was. :::
