Chapter 8: The Memory I Lost

The warehouse had been abandoned for nearly ten years.

That was what the officer told me.

A place filled with old machines, broken windows, and forgotten memories.

But when we arrived, I realized something.

It wasn't forgotten.

Someone had been living there.

The police entered first.

Vanessa and Lily stayed in the car.

I watched the officers move through the building.

Every step felt heavier.

Because deep down, I knew.

The truth was waiting inside.

Not the truth about Mark.

Not the truth about Vanessa.

About me.

An officer came back fifteen minutes later.

"Mr. Carter.""

I stood.

"What did you find?""

He held up a plastic evidence bag.

Inside was a photograph.

I didn't need to see it clearly.

I already knew.

Another picture of me.

This time, younger.

Much younger.

Standing beside a woman I didn't recognize.

"Who is she?""

The officer looked uncomfortable.

"We were hoping you could tell us.""

I stared at the photo.

Nothing.

No memory.

No recognition.

Nothing.

But then Lily walked closer.

"Mom knows her.""

I looked at Vanessa.

Her face had changed.

"Who is she?""

Vanessa looked at the photograph.

Then whispered:

"Your sister.""

My breath stopped.

"My what?""

"You had a sister.""

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was impossible.

"No.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"Daniel...""

"No.""

I stepped back.

"My parents had one child.""

"That's what you were told.""

The sentence hit me.

"What does that mean?""

Vanessa looked away.

"Your parents lied.""

The officer watched silently.

I felt anger rising.

"My entire life is built on lies.""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"I know.""

"No, you don't.""

I pointed toward the warehouse.

"You knew about this.""

"I knew pieces.""

"You knew I had a sister?""

"I knew Mark had information.""

I stared at her.

"How long?""

"Since before we got married.""

The words destroyed whatever trust I had left.

"You knew?""

She stepped closer.

"Daniel, listen to me.""

"No.""

My voice cracked.

"I spent twelve years believing I knew my own life.""

I looked at Lily.

"And now I find out everything is fake.""

Lily started crying.

I immediately regretted raising my voice.

I knelt beside her.

"Sweetheart, I'm sorry.""

She shook her head.

"It's my fault.""

"No.""

"It happened because of me.""

I held her face gently.

"Never say that.""

She looked at me.

"I just wanted you to know the truth.""

Those words broke me.

Because that was all she had wanted.

Not revenge.

Not punishment.

Just someone to believe her.

The officer cleared his throat.

"We found something else.""

He handed me a small box.

Inside was a journal.

The cover was old.

The name written on it made my blood freeze.

Daniel.

My handwriting.

I opened it.

The first page was dated twenty years ago.

I read the first sentence.

And everything changed.

"I don't know if I'll remember this tomorrow.""

I stared.

The officer looked at me.

"What is it?""

I kept reading.

"I keep losing pieces of time.""

My hands started shaking.

The entries continued.

Descriptions of places.

People.

A woman named Emily.

And one sentence repeated over and over.

"I have to find my daughter.""

My daughter.

Not Lily.

Another daughter.

I looked at Vanessa.

"What is this?""

She didn't answer.

Because she was crying.

"Daniel...""

"Who is Emily?""

Her face collapsed.

"Your sister.""

I stared.

"Then why does she say daughter?""

Vanessa looked at the journal.

"Because Emily wasn't your sister.""

The world stopped.

"What?""

She whispered:

"She was your wife.""

I couldn't breathe.

The officer stepped forward.

"Mr. Carter, are you okay?""

No.

I wasn't.

Because suddenly I wasn't uncovering someone else's secrets.

I was uncovering mine.

A life I didn't remember.

A family I didn't know I had.

A person I apparently used to be.

I flipped the journal pages faster.

Near the end, there was a final entry.

The handwriting became messy.

Almost desperate.

"If anything happens to me, protect my daughter.""

Below it was a name.

A name that made my heart stop.

Lily.

I dropped the journal.

"No.""

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

"Daniel.""

"No.""

I looked at her.

"What are you saying?""

She whispered:

"You didn't meet Lily three months after she was born.""

My vision blurred.

"Then when did I meet her?""

May you like

Vanessa looked at me.

"You were there when she was born.""
