Chapter 2: What Lily Heard

The sound of my daughter’s voice coming from that tiny recorder was somehow worse than the bruises.

Because bruises could lie.

A child could fall.

A child could bump into a table.

A child could have an accident.

But fear had a voice.

And I was hearing it.

I held the recorder away from Vanessa while she stood frozen in the middle of Lily’s bedroom.

"Daniel..."" she whispered.

I ignored her.

The recording continued.

Lily’s voice was shaking.

"Mom said I was bad because I made Dad upset.""

My stomach twisted.

A second voice appeared.

Vanessa's voice.

"Stop crying. You're making this harder than it needs to be.""

I looked at my wife.

She immediately shook her head.

"No.""

"That sounds like you.""

"No, Daniel, you don't understand.""

I pressed the recorder closer.

The room became silent except for the speaker.

Little Lily's voice came again.

"I don't want to hide anymore.""

Then Vanessa's voice.

"You need to learn.""

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

I felt like the air had been removed from the room.

My daughter was still standing behind me.

I turned around slowly.

"Lily.""

She looked up.

"How long?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"A long time.""

Those three words destroyed me.

I crouched down.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

She looked embarrassed.

Like she was the one who had done something wrong.

"I tried.""

My throat tightened.

"When?""

"Lots of times.""

I remembered.

The drawings.

The strange questions.

The nights she asked me if I would still love her if someone made a mistake.

I thought they were just childhood fears.

I thought I was being a good father by giving her space.

I had been wrong.

"Lily, I need you to tell me everything.""

She looked at Vanessa.

And immediately became silent.

That was when I realized something.

She wasn't afraid of getting in trouble.

She was afraid of what would happen after she spoke.

I stepped between them.

"Vanessa, leave the room.""

My wife stared at me.

"You're choosing her over me?""

The question shocked me.

"My daughter is hurt.""

"You don't know what happened.""

"Then tell me.""

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Her silence answered for her.

She walked out.

But before she closed the door, she looked at Lily.

Not angry.

Not sad.

Something worse.

A warning.

I saw it.

And so did Lily.

The moment the door shut, my daughter grabbed my hand.

"Dad.""

"What?""

"She knows.""

"Knows what?""

"She knows I recorded it.""

My blood ran cold.

"What else happened?""

Lily sat on the bed.

Her fingers twisted together.

"Sometimes Mom gets angry when you aren't home.""

I sat beside her.

"What does she do?""

She looked at her teddy bear.

"She says things.""

"What things?""

"That I'm the reason you want to leave.""

I closed my eyes.

The marriage problems.

The arguments.

The distance.

Vanessa had been making my daughter carry the weight of our broken relationship.

I felt anger rising.

But I forced myself to stay calm.

Because Lily needed safety.

Not revenge.

"Did Mom hurt you?""

Lily hesitated.

That hesitation terrified me.

"Dad...""

She whispered.

"Can we go somewhere else?""

My heart broke.

This was her home.

She was asking to leave her own home.

"Yes.""

I didn't hesitate.

"Yes, we can.""

I packed a small bag for her.

Clothes.

Her toothbrush.

Mr. Buttons.

Every few seconds, I looked toward the hallway.

Waiting for Vanessa to come back.

She didn't.

That scared me more.

When we reached the stairs, I saw my suitcase still sitting by the front door.

A symbol of the life I thought I was leaving behind.

I picked it up.

Then my phone rang.

Vanessa.

I stared at the screen.

Lily grabbed my hand.

"Don't answer.""

I answered anyway.

"Where are you taking my daughter?""

Her voice was cold now.

No panic.

No fear.

Just anger.

"Somewhere safe.""

"You can't do that.""

"Why?""

Silence.

Then she said something that made my blood freeze.

"Because if you leave this house with her, Daniel, you'll find out what really happened.""

I looked at Lily.

"What does that mean?""

Vanessa lowered her voice.

"You think you know your daughter.""

My grip tightened around the phone.

"What are you saying?""

"I’m saying you should listen to the entire recording before you decide who the victim is.""

The call ended.

I stood there staring at the phone.

For one terrible second, doubt entered my mind.

Not because I believed Vanessa.

Because I realized I didn't know everything.

I looked at the recorder in my hand.

There was more.

I knew there was.

I pressed the button again.

The next recording started.

At first, there was only crying.

Then Lily whispered:

"Dad will believe me this time.""

A pause.

Then another voice answered.

A voice I didn't recognize.

A man's voice.

"Are you sure you want him to know what your mother did?""

I froze.

Because my wife wasn't the only person in the recording.

May you like

And whoever that man was...

He knew my family better than I did.
