Chapter 7: The Man Who Knew My Name

I stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.

Mark standing in the hospital hallway.

A newborn baby in the arms of a nurse.

And a file with my name written across it.

My name.

Daniel Carter.

But that was impossible.

At least, it was supposed to be.

Because according to everything I knew, I was a stranger to Vanessa when Lily was born.

I had met Vanessa three months later at a coffee shop downtown.

I remembered it clearly.

The rainy afternoon.

The book she was reading.

The way she smiled when she accidentally spilled coffee on my jacket and apologized five times.

I remembered thinking she was someone I wanted to know.

Someone I wanted in my life.

But now I was holding proof that my name existed in her life before I ever remembered meeting her.

The officer watched me carefully.

"Mr. Carter, do you recognize this?""

I shook my head.

"No.""

Vanessa was staring at the photograph.

Her hand covered her mouth.

"That's Mark.""

The officer nodded.

"Yes.""

"Why was he there?""

"We don't know yet.""

I looked at him.

"What are you saying?""

He opened the folder.

"We found inconsistencies in the hospital records. Some documents were altered after Lily's birth.""

My stomach tightened.

"Altered by who?""

The officer glanced at Vanessa.

"That's what we're trying to find out.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Are you saying someone changed my daughter's records?""

The officer didn't answer immediately.

That pause told me everything.

"There is another problem.""

"What?""

He pulled out another paper.

"This signature.""

He pointed.

I looked down.

My own name stared back at me.

Daniel Carter.

But the signature was slightly different.

Like someone had practiced writing it.

"This isn't mine.""

The officer nodded.

"We thought you might say that.""

My chest tightened.

"Why?""

"Because we found another document with the same signature.""

He flipped the page.

"An adoption request.""

The room went silent.

I looked at Vanessa.

Her face had gone pale.

"Adoption?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

The officer looked at her.

"Mrs. Carter, did you ever discuss adoption with anyone?""

"No.""

"Did you ever sign documents related to adoption?""

"No.""

I looked at the papers again.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Then Lily appeared at the hallway entrance.

"Dad?""

I immediately folded the papers.

I didn't want her hearing any more.

"Hey, sweetheart.""

She walked closer.

"Are we leaving?""

I forced a smile.

"Soon.""

She looked at Vanessa.

Then at the officer.

"Did you find him?""

The officer lowered himself slightly.

"Find who?""

"Mark.""

Everyone froze.

I looked at Lily.

"You know where he is?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

Then she whispered:

"But I know where he goes.""

My heart started pounding.

"What do you mean?""

She looked at her teddy bear.

"Mr. Buttons knows.""

I frowned.

"What?""

She grabbed the bear from the couch.

"There's another pocket.""

My entire body went cold.

Another pocket?

She turned the bear around.

Her small fingers searched along the stitching.

Then she found it.

A second zipper.

Nobody moved.

The officer stepped closer.

"May I?""

Lily nodded.

He opened the hidden compartment.

Inside was a small piece of paper.

Not a recorder.

Not a phone.

A map.

I took it carefully.

It was hand-drawn.

A child’s handwriting marked several places.

Our house.

The school.

A park.

And one location circled in red.

An abandoned warehouse outside town.

I looked at Lily.

"Why is this here?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Because Mark told Mom if she didn't do what he wanted, he would take me there.""

Vanessa covered her mouth.

The officer immediately reached for his radio.

"Do you know this location?""

He looked at me.

"Yes.""

I swallowed.

"It's where my father used to keep his old equipment.""

The officer stared.

"Your father?""

I nodded.

"He sold the property years ago.""

I looked back at the map.

A horrible thought entered my mind.

Someone had been there.

Someone who knew my family.

Someone who knew places from my childhood.

The officer moved toward the door.

"We need to check this location.""

"I’m coming.""

"No.""

The officer's voice was firm.

"You need to stay here.""

But I couldn't.

Not after everything.

Not after finding out my entire life had hidden pieces.

Not after seeing my daughter afraid.

Then Vanessa grabbed my arm.

"Daniel.""

I turned.

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

"There is something else you need to know.""

I almost laughed.

Another secret.

Another impossible truth.

"What now?""

She looked at Lily.

Then back at me.

"When Mark came back...""

She hesitated.

"He didn't just threaten me.""

"What did he do?""

Her voice dropped.

"He showed me a picture.""

My heart stopped.

"What picture?""

"Of you.""

I frowned.

"Me?""

She nodded.

"From before we met.""

The room felt colder.

"Where did he get a picture of me before we met?""

May you like

Vanessa whispered:

"Because he said he knew you before I did.""
