Chapter 4: The Hidden Truth

I stared at the second recorder in Vanessa’s hand.

For a moment, I couldn’t move.

The front door was still open behind me. Cold night air rushed into the hallway. Somewhere outside, Lily was crying my name.

But all I could see was Vanessa.

My wife.

The woman I had spent twelve years loving.

The woman I had just been ready to believe was capable of hurting our daughter.

She held the recorder like it weighed a hundred pounds.

"Where did you get that?"" I asked.

Her fingers tightened around it.

"From Mark.""

My stomach dropped.

"Why does he have another recorder?""

"Because he wanted me to think I was being watched.""

I stepped closer.

"Vanessa, I need the truth. Right now.""

She nodded slowly.

"I know.""

For the first time that night, she looked less like someone hiding something and more like someone who had been trapped.

But I couldn't forget Lily's bruises.

I couldn't forget the recording.

I couldn't forget my daughter's terrified eyes.

"Play it," I said.

Vanessa looked down.

"I don't know if you’re ready.""

A bitter laugh escaped me.

"My eight-year-old daughter was hiding a recording device inside a teddy bear because she was afraid nobody would believe her. I think I'm past ready.""

She flinched.

Then she pressed the button.

Static filled the hallway.

Then Mark's voice.

"You have one chance, Vanessa.""

A cold shiver went through me.

The voice was calm.

Too calm.

"I already told you I won't do this," Vanessa's recorded voice answered.

Mark laughed quietly.

"You still think Daniel will believe you?""

A pause.

Then Vanessa said:

"He loves Lily.""

"He loves the version of you that you created.""

I looked at my wife.

She looked away.

The recording continued.

"You think you're the victim here?"" Mark said.

"You forgot who protected you all those years.""

"I protected myself," Vanessa replied.

"No. I protected you.""

The audio crackled.

Then Mark's voice became darker.

"Do you want Daniel to know what happened that night?""

My heart started racing.

"What night?"" I whispered.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

The recording continued.

"Leave my daughter alone.""

There was a long silence.

Then Mark said:

"Your daughter?""

A pause.

"You mean the little girl who thinks you're her hero?""

My hands curled into fists.

The recording ended.

I stared at Vanessa.

"What was that?""

She didn't answer.

"Vanessa.""

She swallowed.

"I was trying to keep him away.""

"By doing what?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"By pretending everything was normal.""

I shook my head.

"No. You don't get to say that.""

"I know.""

"You let me think our daughter was scared of you.""

"I know.""

"You let me believe—"

My voice broke.

"You let me believe I failed her.""

Vanessa covered her face.

"I was scared.""

The anger inside me fought with the pain.

"Scared of what?""

She lowered her hands.

"That if I told you everything, you would look at me the same way everyone else did.""

I wanted to ask what she meant.

But then Lily screamed again.

"Dad!""

I ran outside.

She was standing beside my car, pointing toward the driveway.

A figure was disappearing into the darkness beyond the streetlight.

I grabbed my phone and called emergency services.

"Someone was in my house," I said.

The operator asked questions.

I answered as quickly as I could.

When I hung up, Lily grabbed my jacket.

"Dad.""

I knelt down.

"What happened?""

She looked toward the road.

"That was him.""

My heart stopped.

"Mark?""

She nodded.

"He came to my room before.""

I forced myself to stay calm.

"What did he do?""

"He asked about the recorder.""

"When?""

"Yesterday.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She had followed us outside.

Her face had gone completely pale.

"Why didn't you tell me?"" I asked.

Lily started crying.

"Because Mom told me to hide.""

Vanessa froze.

"Lily...""

"I thought you were protecting me," Lily whispered.

Those words broke something in Vanessa.

She dropped to her knees.

"I was trying to.""

"But you didn't tell Dad.""

"I know.""

The police arrived twenty minutes later.

The questions began.

The house became filled with flashing lights and unfamiliar voices.

An officer examined Lily's injuries while another checked the bedroom.

I stood there feeling useless.

Like I had failed to see something happening right in front of me.

Then an officer came downstairs holding a small plastic evidence bag.

Inside was a phone.

"Mr. Carter?""

I looked up.

"Yes?""

"We found this hidden behind your daughter's bookshelf.""

My blood turned cold.

"That's not ours.""

The officer nodded.

"We figured.""

He held the phone carefully.

"There are several messages on it.""

"From who?""

The officer looked at the screen.

Then at me.

"Someone saved as 'M.''"

Vanessa covered her mouth.

"Mark.""

The officer continued scrolling.

"There are also photos.""

My heart sank.

"What kind of photos?""

He hesitated.

Then said:

"Photos of your family.""

The room went silent.

I looked at Lily.

Then Vanessa.

Then the phone.

Someone had been watching us.

Not for days.

Not for weeks.

For months.

The officer turned the phone around.

The last message on the screen had been sent only ten minutes earlier.

It said:

"You still don't know the whole story.""

And below it was another message.

May you like

One that made Vanessa collapse into the nearest chair.

"Ask Daniel why Lily isn't his daughter.""
