Chapter 5: The Name On The Paper

I read the message again.

Then again.

My brain refused to process it.

Ask Daniel why Lily isn't his daughter.

The words sat there like a weapon.

A simple sentence.

A sentence that could destroy twelve years of my life.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

Not angry.

Not offended.

Terrified.

"Is it true?""

My voice barely sounded like mine.

Vanessa didn't answer.

That was enough.

My chest tightened.

"Is Lily not my daughter?""

Lily was upstairs with a police officer, safely away from the conversation.

But I still lowered my voice.

Because even saying those words felt wrong.

Vanessa wiped her tears.

"Daniel...""

"Answer me.""

She closed her eyes.

And whispered:

"No.""

The world became silent.

I stepped back.

"No?""

She shook her head.

"Not like that.""

I laughed once.

A broken sound.

"Not like what?""

"You're her father.""

"Biologically?""

She didn't answer.

That was the answer.

I turned away.

The anger wasn't loud.

It was worse.

It was empty.

Twelve years.

First steps.

First words.

First day of school.

Every bedtime story.

Every fever I stayed awake through.

Every time she called me Dad.

Was any of it real?

Vanessa reached toward me.

I moved away.

"Don't.""

Her hand stopped.

"I never wanted to hurt you.""

"But you lied.""

"I was afraid.""

"You lied for eight years.""

She looked down.

"Because I knew if I told you, I could lose you.""

I stared at her.

"You thought I would stop loving her?""

"No.""

Her voice cracked.

"I thought you would stop loving me.""

That sentence almost made me angry all over again.

Because somehow she had made herself the victim.

But then I saw something.

Not an excuse.

Pain.

Real pain.

"Who is her biological father?""

Vanessa looked toward the stairs.

"Mark.""

The name felt poisonous.

I couldn't breathe.

"Your brother?""

She nodded.

"He isn't my biological brother.""

I froze.

"What?""

She sat down.

"Years ago, my mother married his father. We grew up together. Everyone called him my brother, but we weren't related.""

I stared at her.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because Mark was never supposed to come back.""

I walked to the window.

Outside, police lights painted the street.

"How did this happen?""

Vanessa's voice became quiet.

"I was young.""

"When?""

"Before I met you.""

I looked at her.

"So Lily was born before we married.""

She nodded.

"I found out I was pregnant after Mark disappeared.""

"Then why did you let me believe she was mine?""

Her face broke.

"Because when I met you, Lily was a baby.""

I remembered.

The first time I saw her.

A tiny infant sleeping in Vanessa's arms.

I remembered holding her.

Promising I would protect her.

"You chose me.""

Vanessa nodded.

"I did.""

"Then why?""

"Because you were the first person who ever loved her without conditions.""

I looked away.

The words hurt.

Because I knew they were true.

"But Mark knew?""

"Yes.""

"When?""

"When he came back.""

She explained.

Mark had returned six months earlier.

He had found out about Lily.

He had demanded money.

He had threatened to expose everything.

But there was something Vanessa hadn't told me.

Something she had hidden even longer.

"He hurt her.""

My head turned.

"What?""

She was crying now.

"Not the way you think.""

"What does that mean?""

"Mark never wanted Lily.""

Her voice shook.

"He wanted control.""

I listened.

"Every time he came here, he tried to convince Lily that you weren't her real father.""

My fists tightened.

"He told her.""

Vanessa nodded.

"He told her she was a secret. That you would leave if you knew.""

I remembered Lily asking:

Promise you won't leave me.

I felt sick.

The fear suddenly made sense.

The bruises.

The recorder.

The hiding.

Mark had been poisoning her mind.

But then I remembered something.

"Who caused the bruises?""

Vanessa looked down.

"I did.""

Everything stopped.

My face went cold.

"What?""

She immediately shook her head.

"Not like that.""

I stepped back.

"Explain.""

She covered her face.

"She was trying to protect me.""

"What does that mean?""

"Mark grabbed her.""

My anger exploded.

"What?""

"The bruises happened when I pulled him away from her.""

I stared.

"He was hurting her?""

Vanessa nodded.

"I lied because I thought I could handle it.""

A terrible silence filled the room.

Then footsteps came from the stairs.

Lily appeared.

"Dad?""

I turned.

Her face was pale.

The officer had probably heard enough to know she needed her parents.

I walked toward her immediately.

She ran into my arms.

"Dad, are you mad?""

The same question.

Again.

The same fear.

I held her tighter.

"No.""

She looked up.

"You're not leaving?""

I closed my eyes.

"No.""

Behind her, Vanessa started crying.

Then my phone buzzed.

Another unknown number.

I opened it.

One photo.

A hospital bracelet.

A name printed across it.

My hands started shaking.

Because I knew that name.

It was mine.

May you like

And underneath the picture was a message:

"You still don't know what happened the night Lily was born.""
