Chapter 8: The Recording My Father Left Behind

Michael stared at the screen.

His father's face filled the laptop.

Arthur Carter looked older than Michael remembered, his silver hair neatly combed, his hands resting on the arms of a leather chair.

Sarah sat beside him.

Neither spoke for several seconds.

Then Arthur leaned toward the camera.

"If Michael is watching this, I hope he has finally understood that the family he thinks he knows is not the family he actually has.""

Michael felt his throat tighten.

"Why didn't you tell me?"" he whispered.

Jonathan turned up the volume.

Arthur continued.

"Vanessa came into my life during a difficult period. I was lonely after your mother died, and I made mistakes. Some of those mistakes affected people I loved.""

He looked toward Sarah.

"Robert Hensley helped me conceal the existence of Daniel. I thought I was protecting the family. Instead, I created a situation that allowed Robert and Vanessa to manipulate everyone.""

Sarah gently touched his arm.

"Arthur, tell him about the documents.""

Arthur nodded.

"Before I married Vanessa, I created a private estate agreement. It protected every biological descendant of mine.""

He paused.

"That included you, Daniel, and any other child who could be legally verified.""

Michael frowned.

"Brandon.""

Jonathan looked at him.

Arthur continued.

"Vanessa eventually discovered that Robert was Brandon's biological father. She believed she could use that connection to make a claim against my estate.""

Michael leaned forward.

"Why did you let her?""

Arthur looked directly into the camera.

"I didn't know how far she would go.""

The video continued.

"I discovered the forged documents shortly before I died. I confronted Robert. He admitted that he had helped Vanessa move money through several accounts.""

Sarah spoke.

"He was afraid of her.""

Arthur nodded.

"He was afraid of losing Brandon. Vanessa threatened to expose his involvement in the financial misconduct and ruin his relationship with his son.""

Michael felt sick.

"So Robert helped her steal from us.""

Arthur continued.

"Eventually, I realized that Vanessa had also been accessing Sarah's financial and medical records.""

Michael looked at the screen.

"Did you know?""

Sarah nodded.

"I discovered an unfamiliar login on my patient account. I told Arthur, and he helped me preserve the information.""

Arthur leaned forward.

"I wanted to report everything immediately, but Sarah asked me to wait until we had enough evidence.""

Michael stared at the screen.

His father had known.

His wife had known.

And neither had told him.

Arthur's expression softened.

"Michael, I know you will be angry that we kept this from you. But we were trying to protect you and Lily.""

Sarah looked into the camera.

"There's another reason I wanted you to see this.""

She took a breath.

"Vanessa has been telling people that I wanted Brandon to inherit Lily's money. That is completely false.""

Michael shook his head.

"Of course it is.""

Sarah continued.

"Brandon is innocent in this. He's a child. If the law determines he is entitled to something through Arthur's estate, he should receive it.

But Lily's inheritance is hers. Nobody should ever make her feel guilty for having it.""

Michael wiped his eyes.

Sarah smiled.

"Promise me you'll remember that.""

Then Arthur spoke again.

"The original will and the full financial records are in the safe deposit box. But there is one document Vanessa must never get her hands on.""

Michael leaned forward.

"What document?""

Arthur looked directly at the camera.

"The original birth declaration for Brandon.""

The video ended.

Nobody moved.

Finally, Daniel spoke.

"That explains why Vanessa was so desperate to get the original will.""

Jonathan closed the laptop.

"Why is Brandon's birth declaration so important?""

Daniel opened the folder.

"Because Robert registered Brandon under Arthur's name.""

Michael stared.

"What?""

"Robert told me he arranged the paperwork. Vanessa claimed Arthur was the father, and the birth certificate listed him as such.""

Jonathan frowned.

"Was there a DNA test?""

Daniel shook his head.

"Not that I know of.""

Michael leaned back.

"So Brandon has been living under a false identity.""

"Potentially.""

Michael rubbed his forehead.

"And the original birth declaration proves Robert was his father?""

Daniel nodded.

"Robert told me the document contained his biological acknowledgment.""

Jonathan looked at him.

"Why didn't he correct the birth certificate?""

"Because Vanessa convinced him that Arthur would eventually leave Brandon a substantial inheritance.""

Michael closed his eyes.

Everything had been built on lies.

Vanessa had married Arthur.

Robert had fathered Brandon.

Daniel had been hidden.

Lily had been targeted.

And Sarah had discovered the truth just before she died.

Michael looked at Jonathan.

"We need that safe deposit box opened.""

"Already arranged. The bank has agreed to meet us tomorrow morning, provided we bring identification and the executor documents.""

"Then we're going tomorrow.""

At 8:30 the following morning, Michael, Jonathan, and Daniel arrived at the bank.

A senior manager escorted them into a private room.

"Mr. Carter, the account was established by Arthur Carter nearly fifteen years ago. The contents have remained sealed since his death.""

Michael signed the required forms.

The manager brought out a metal box.

Inside were several folders, a small velvet pouch, and a sealed envelope.

Michael immediately recognized his father's handwriting.

*For my son.*

He opened it.

Michael,

If you have reached this point, Vanessa's actions have probably forced you to discover the truth I should have told you years ago.

I am sorry.

The family business, the estate, and the trust were never intended to be a weapon.

I wanted every child connected to me to have a fair chance at life.

But Vanessa believed fairness meant taking everything for herself.

Michael swallowed.

He continued reading.

The original will is in the blue folder.

The birth declaration is in the red folder.

The final document is in the sealed envelope. It should only be opened if Sarah's death becomes part of a criminal investigation.

Michael looked up.

"Sarah's death?""

Jonathan became alert.

"Open the envelope.""

Michael carefully broke the seal.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

It contained the name of a private investigator and a short note.

I hired this investigator after discovering that Vanessa had accessed Sarah's medical records.

He found evidence that someone had attempted to obtain information about Sarah's medication through a private pharmacy.

The pharmacy records identify the person who requested the changes.

At the bottom was a name.

*Dr. Samuel Whitmore.*

Michael frowned.

"Who is that?""

Jonathan recognized it.

"A physician who previously worked with Sarah's oncology team.""

Daniel looked at the document.

"Was he involved in her treatment?""

Michael nodded slowly.

"He was a consultant.""

Jonathan examined the note.

"We need to find him.""

The bank manager returned with the red folder.

Michael opened it.

Inside was Brandon's original birth declaration.

The document listed Robert Hensley as the biological father.

Vanessa Carter was listed as the mother.

And Arthur Carter's name had been added later in a different ink.

There was also a handwritten statement.

I acknowledge that the child is mine. I agree to maintain financial responsibility and protect his identity until the estate matters are resolved.

Robert's signature appeared underneath.

Michael stared at it.

"That's it.""

Daniel nodded.

"Now Brandon's true parentage can be established.""

Jonathan carefully photographed the document.

"We'll need an official forensic examination, but this is extremely important.""

Michael looked at the blue folder.

Inside was the original will.

The document contained the same provisions Daniel had described.

Every biological descendant was entitled to a protected share.

But one clause stood out.

If any beneficiary attempted to obtain another beneficiary's share through fraud, the offending party would lose any discretionary benefits granted under the estate.

Michael read the clause twice.

"Vanessa isn't a beneficiary.""

Jonathan shook his head.

"Not directly.""

"Then what does this clause change?""

Jonathan pointed to a separate provision.

"Arthur created a discretionary family support allowance for surviving spouses. It could be terminated if the spouse participated in financial misconduct.""

Michael looked at the amount.

It was substantial.

Vanessa had been receiving payments from the estate for years.

And now those payments could be recovered.

Daniel found another document.

"There's something else.""

He handed it to Michael.

A letter from Robert.

Arthur, I know I have made mistakes. I know Vanessa has gone too far. But I cannot allow Brandon to grow up believing he has no father.

If you agree to recognize him, I will sign away my claim to the business and the estate.

I only ask that you protect him.

Michael felt a strange mixture of anger and sadness.

Robert had tried to protect his son.

But he had also helped Vanessa endanger another child.

Jonathan gathered the documents.

"We have enough to challenge the guardianship petition and request a full investigation.""

Michael nodded.

"Let's go.""

His phone rang.

Evelyn.

He answered immediately.

"What's happening?""

"Michael, the judge has scheduled an emergency hearing for this afternoon.""

"Good. We'll be there.""

"There's a complication.""

Michael stopped walking.

"What?""

"Vanessa's attorney submitted a sworn statement from Brandon.""

Michael frowned.

"Brandon?""

"Yes. The statement claims that you threatened him and told him to lie about his biological father.""

Michael felt his chest tighten.

"That's not true.""

"I know. But Vanessa has attached his signature.""

Michael looked at the documents in his hand.

"How old is Brandon?""

"Twelve.""

"Did anyone explain the statement to him?""

"That's what we need to establish.""

Michael immediately called Evelyn again.

"Where is Brandon?""

"He's at the house with Karen Mitchell.""

"Put him on the phone.""

A moment later, a small voice answered.

"Michael?""

"Brandon, buddy. Did you sign something for your mother?""

Silence.

Then Brandon whispered:

"She said I had to.""

Michael closed his eyes.

"Did you understand what it said?""

"No.""

"Did you write it yourself?""

"No. Mom wrote it, and she told me to copy the last page.""

Michael looked at Jonathan.

He put the phone on speaker.

"Brandon, did your mother tell you what would happen if you didn't sign?""

The boy began crying.

"She said they'd take me away.""

Michael felt his anger turn into something colder.

"You're not in trouble. Do you understand?""

"Yes.""

"Where is your mother?""

Brandon hesitated.

"She left.""

"When?""

"This morning.""

"Where did she go?""

"I don't know.""

Then the boy whispered:

"But I heard her talking to someone.""

"Who?""

"She said she was going to meet the doctor.""

Michael felt the blood drain from his face.

"Which doctor?""

Brandon sniffed.

"The one who helped Grandma Sarah.""

Michael looked at the name in his father's letter.

Dr. Samuel Whitmore.

He immediately called Jonathan.

"We need to find Whitmore before Vanessa does.""

But before Jonathan could answer, Brandon spoke again.

"Michael?""

"Yes?""

"Mom said if the doctor tells the truth, she'll tell everyone what happened to Sarah.""

Michael stared at the phone.

"What does that mean?""

May you like

Brandon's voice became almost inaudible.

"She said the doctor was there the night Mommy died.""
