Chapter 4: The Son Nobody Knew About

"Your father had another son.""

Margaret's words hung in Michael's ear.

For several seconds, he couldn't speak.

Across the storage room, Vanessa stood motionless. Brandon was crying quietly, clutching the sleeves of his sweatshirt. Lily pressed herself against Michael's side.

"Margaret," Michael finally said, "what are you talking about?""

"I should have told you years ago.""

"Then tell me now.""

His aunt sighed.

"Your father had a relationship with a woman named Elaine before he married your mother. She gave birth to a boy. His name was Daniel.""

Michael stared at the floor.

"Daniel what?""

"Daniel Hensley.""

Michael looked at Jonathan.

The name meant nothing to him until he glanced at the marriage certificate again.

Robert Hensley.

The dead notary.

"Is Daniel related to Robert?""

"Yes," Margaret whispered.

"Robert was his father.""

Michael's stomach tightened.

"You're telling me Dad had a child with Robert's wife?""

"Not exactly. Elaine was Robert's fiancée when she became pregnant. Your father promised to take responsibility. But Robert raised the boy after Elaine disappeared.""

Michael rubbed his forehead.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?""

"Your father wanted to protect the family reputation. He sent money every month, but he never publicly acknowledged Daniel.""

"And Vanessa?""

"She knew about him. She found out shortly after marrying your father.""

Michael turned toward Vanessa.

"Is that why you married my father?""

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"Don't flatter yourself. Your father was a lonely old man who wanted someone to take care of him.""

"Did you know about Daniel?""

"Of course I knew.""

"Did you know Robert was his father?""

Vanessa's eyes flickered.

"Robert was involved in the family's affairs. That's all you need to know.""

Jonathan stepped forward.

"Mrs. Carter, your relationship with Robert Hensley appears to be considerably more complicated than you've represented.""

Vanessa lifted her chin.

"Be careful what you accuse me of.""

Evelyn opened her notebook.

"We're not accusing anyone yet. We're establishing facts.""

Michael returned his attention to Margaret.

"Why did you call tonight?""

"Because Vanessa asked me about the original Carter estate documents. She wanted to know if Daniel had ever signed a release of his inheritance rights.""

Michael looked at the stack of papers.

"What inheritance rights?""

Margaret hesitated.

"Your father created a separate family trust before he died. It included a clause protecting any biological children he had, whether acknowledged publicly or not.""

Michael closed his eyes.

His father had always been secretive about money.

He had built a successful construction business, owned commercial properties, and accumulated investments that Michael had inherited after his death.

Michael had assumed everything had been transferred to him.

Apparently, that wasn't true.

"Did Daniel ever make a claim?""

"No. Robert handled the paperwork. Daniel grew up believing your father wanted nothing to do with him.""

Michael looked at the certificate.

"And Vanessa?""

"She told me Daniel was dead.""

"Was he?""

"No.""

Margaret began crying again.

"I saw him three months ago.""

Michael gripped the phone.

"Where?""

"At Robert's funeral.""

The room went silent.

Michael glanced at Vanessa.

She looked away.

"Margaret, did you speak to him?""

"Yes. He asked about you. He wanted to know whether you knew he existed.""

"What did you tell him?""

"That you didn't.""

Michael swallowed.

"Where is he now?""

"I don't know. But I have his number.""

"Send it to me.""

"I will. But Michael, there's something else.""

"What?""

"Daniel didn't just ask about the family. He asked about Sarah.""

Michael frowned.

"Why would he ask about Sarah?""

Margaret's voice dropped.

"Because he said she contacted him before she died.""

Michael felt the air leave his lungs.

"What?""

"She wanted to know whether Robert had been involved in the Carter estate documents.""

Michael looked at the flash drive in Jonathan's hand.

Sarah had known.

She had been investigating this long before her death.

And she had apparently found Daniel.

"Why didn't she tell me?""

"Maybe she was afraid.""

Michael looked toward Lily.

His daughter was staring at the floor.

He knelt beside her.

"Sweetheart, are you okay?""

She nodded, but her eyes were wet.

"Are we going to lose our house?""

Michael held her shoulders.

"No. Nobody is taking your home.""

"Grandma said we would have to leave if I didn't sign.""

Michael's chest tightened.

"She told you that?""

Lily nodded.

"She said Daddy would lose everything because of me.""

Michael pulled her into his arms.

"Listen carefully. None of this is your fault. Not one bit.""

Behind him, Vanessa scoffed.

"You're making promises you can't keep.""

Michael turned.

"Get out.""

Vanessa stared at him.

"What?""

"You heard me.""

"This is my home!""

"No. It was my father's home. He left it to me. And you're no longer welcome here.""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"You can't throw me out without consequences.""

Evelyn stepped forward.

"Any change in occupancy will be handled through the appropriate legal process. For tonight, I suggest you remain away from the child.""

Vanessa pointed at Lily.

"She has been lying about me!""

Lily flinched.

Michael stood between them.

"One more word to her, and the police will hear it.""

Vanessa grabbed her handbag.

"I'm calling my attorney.""

"Please do.""

She marched upstairs.

Brandon remained beside the doorway.

Michael looked at him.

"Brandon, come here.""

The boy shook his head.

"I didn't know.""

Michael crouched.

"Didn't know what?""

"About the money.""

Michael waited.

"Mom said Lily was going to get everything. She said that wasn't fair because I was Grandpa's real grandson.""

Michael's expression softened slightly.

"Brandon, you are not responsible for what your mother did.""

"She said I would get a house and a car.""

"How long has she been telling you that?""

"Since last Christmas.""

Michael looked at Jonathan.

"Can you arrange for Brandon to stay with a relative tonight?""

Jonathan nodded.

"His father isn't listed on the household emergency contact?""

Brandon looked confused.

"I don't have a dad.""

Michael glanced at the marriage certificate.

He didn't know what to believe anymore.

Evelyn approached the boy gently.

"Do you know Daniel Hensley?""

Brandon shook his head.

"Who?""

"Never mind. We can talk about that later.""

At that moment, Vanessa returned carrying a suitcase.

She stopped when she saw Brandon.

"Come on. We're leaving.""

Brandon hesitated.

"Where are we going?""

"Somewhere your mother won't be insulted every five minutes.""

The boy looked at Michael.

"Can I stay here?""

Vanessa's face twisted.

"Absolutely not.""

Michael looked at Evelyn.

"Can we make arrangements for him to stay with a relative?""

"Not without confirming the legal situation and ensuring his safety.""

Vanessa grabbed Brandon's arm.

"You're coming with me.""

Brandon winced.

"You're hurting me.""

Michael immediately stepped forward.

"Let go of him.""

Vanessa released his arm.

For one brief moment, she looked almost frightened.

Then she smiled.

"You have no idea what you're walking into, Michael.""

She picked up her suitcase and left.

The front door slammed.

Brandon stood in the hallway, crying.

Lily walked toward him.

She held out the stuffed rabbit.

"You can hold Bunny if you want.""

Brandon stared at it.

Then he took it.

Michael watched the two children.

One had been taught that she didn't deserve food.

The other had been taught that he deserved everything.

Both had been manipulated by the same person.

And Michael was beginning to understand that Vanessa had spent years building a story that neither child had been old enough to question.

Jonathan's phone rang.

He stepped into the hallway.

A moment later, he returned.

"Michael, we have a problem.""

"What now?""

"The bank has identified the device used to submit the forged transfer.""

"Vanessa's laptop?""

"No.""

Jonathan looked at Brandon.

"It was a device registered to Robert Hensley's estate.""

Michael frowned.

"Robert died four months ago.""

"I know.""

Jonathan paused.

"Someone has been accessing his accounts since his death.""

Michael felt a chill.

"Who?""

Jonathan looked down at his phone.

"The bank traced the recovery email to a name.""

May you like

He turned the screen toward Michael.

*Daniel Hensley.*
