Chapter 6: The Woman Who Wanted My Daughter

Michael drove home with Jonathan beside him and Daniel following in another car.
He barely noticed the traffic.
All he could think about was Lily.
The court order.
The social worker.
Vanessa standing in his living room, pretending to be the concerned grandmother.
He had spent six months grieving his wife.
Now he was fighting to keep someone from taking his daughter.
When he reached the house, a black sedan was parked near the front entrance.
A uniformed police officer stood beside the door.
Vanessa was inside.
So was Evelyn.
Michael rushed into the living room.
"Where is my daughter?""
Evelyn pointed toward the upstairs hallway.
"She's in her bedroom with the social worker.""
Michael looked at Vanessa.
"What are you doing here?""
Vanessa held up a folder.
"Protecting Lily.""
"You have no right to be near her.""
"I have a temporary emergency guardianship order.""
Michael looked at the document.
The first page carried the seal of the county family court.
His name appeared beneath the heading.
*Respondent: Michael Carter.*
The allegations included emotional instability, neglect, and suspected financial exploitation of a minor.
Michael almost laughed.
"You filed this?""
Vanessa's expression remained calm.
"I had no choice.""
"You made my daughter sign financial documents.""
"That's a lie.""
"You forged my signature.""
"Prove it.""
"You submitted a false death certificate!""
Vanessa raised her voice.
"Because you abandoned your responsibilities!""
The police officer stepped forward.
"Mr. Carter, please lower your voice.""
Michael turned.
"Officer, this woman has been stealing from my daughter's trust.""
"That's not what we're here to investigate.""
"Then what are you here for?""
The social worker emerged from the hallway.
She was a woman in her fifties with short brown hair and a tablet tucked beneath her arm.
"Mr. Carter?""
"Yes.""
"My name is Karen Mitchell. I'm with Child Protective Services.""
Michael took a breath.
"Is my daughter okay?""
"She's physically safe at the moment.""
"Can I see her?""
Karen hesitated.
"Not until we've reviewed the order.""
Michael looked at Jonathan.
His attorney took the document.
"May I see the supporting affidavit?""
Vanessa handed him another folder.
Jonathan began reading.
His expression changed.
"What is this?""
"Evidence," Vanessa replied.
Jonathan turned toward Michael.
"She's alleging that you have been suffering from severe depression and have made threats of self-harm.""
Michael stared.
"What?""
Vanessa looked down.
"I didn't want to do this.""
"You lied!""
The officer moved between them.
"Sir, step back.""
Jonathan continued reading.
"She's also claiming Lily has been left alone overnight on multiple occasions.""
Michael felt sick.
"That's completely false.""
Vanessa shrugged.
"Then explain your business trips.""
"I had a caregiver in the house.""
"Me. And I witnessed your neglect.""
Jonathan raised his voice.
"Mrs. Carter, this affidavit contains several statements that appear inconsistent with the evidence we've already obtained.""
Vanessa smiled faintly.
"Then let the court decide.""
Michael looked toward the staircase.
"Can I at least speak to my daughter?""
Karen finally nodded.
"Under supervision.""
Michael walked upstairs.
Lily was sitting on her bed, holding Bunny.
Her eyes were red.
The social worker stood near the doorway.
When Lily saw her father, she immediately stood.
"Daddy!""
Michael opened his arms.
She ran into them.
He held her tightly.
"It's okay, sweetheart.""
"Grandma says I have to go with her.""
"No, baby.""
"She says you aren't allowed to keep me.""
Michael kissed her hair.
"Nobody is taking you away without the truth being heard.""
Lily pulled back.
"Did I do something bad?""
His heart broke.
"No.""
"Because I told you about the papers?""
"No, sweetheart. You did exactly the right thing.""
The social worker approached.
"Lily, can I ask you a few questions?""
Michael looked at her.
"Please be gentle.""
Karen nodded.
She crouched in front of Lily.
"Do you feel safe with your father?""
Lily nodded immediately.
"Yes.""
"Does he ever hurt you?""
"No.""
"Does he make you afraid?""
Lily looked confused.
"No.""
"Does he ever refuse to give you food?""
Lily hesitated.
Michael felt his stomach tighten.
Then she whispered:
"Grandma did.""
Karen looked up.
"What do you mean?""
Lily held Bunny closer.
"She said I couldn't eat the same food as Brandon.""
"Why?""
"Because Mommy left me money, and Grandma said I didn't deserve it.""
The social worker's expression changed.
"Did she ever ask you to sign documents?""
Lily nodded.
"Lots.""
"What did she tell you?""
"She said if I signed them, she would stop being mad.""
Karen slowly took notes.
"Did anyone explain what the papers meant?""
"No.""
"Did you understand what you were signing?""
Lily shook her head.
"No. I just wanted dinner.""
Michael closed his eyes.
Karen looked toward the hallway.
"Mr. Carter, I need to speak with you privately.""
He kissed Lily's forehead.
"I'll be right outside.""
When he stepped into the hall, Jonathan was waiting.
"What's happening?"" Michael asked.
"Vanessa's attorney filed the emergency petition yesterday afternoon.""
"Yesterday?""
"Yes.""
Michael stared.
"She knew I was coming home.""
Jonathan nodded.
"She probably anticipated a confrontation.""
Michael looked toward Lily's bedroom.
"How could a judge sign this?""
"Emergency orders can be issued based on sworn allegations. The court hasn't heard both sides yet.""
"Then we challenge it.""
"Immediately.""
They returned downstairs.
Vanessa was sitting on the sofa, drinking coffee.
She looked remarkably comfortable.
Michael stopped in front of her.
"You planned this.""
Vanessa stirred her coffee.
"I planned to protect Brandon and Lily.""
"Don't pretend you care about Lily.""
She put down the cup.
"Sarah would be ashamed of you.""
Michael went still.
Vanessa continued.
"She trusted you to protect her daughter. Instead, you left her with strangers while you traveled around the country.""
Michael's hands tightened.
"Sarah trusted me to protect Lily. And I will.""
Vanessa leaned closer.
"Then you should have paid more attention.""
"What does that mean?""
"Ask yourself why Sarah never told you about the problems with the trust.""
Michael stared at her.
"Because you were hiding them.""
Vanessa smiled.
"Maybe she knew you wouldn't believe her.""
Jonathan stepped between them.
"That's enough.""
The front door opened.
Daniel entered.
Vanessa's face changed instantly.
"Daniel.""
He looked at her.
"Vanessa.""
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then she stood.
"What are you doing here?""
"Looking at the woman who stole my father's records.""
Vanessa laughed.
"Robert was not your father.""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Biologically, he was.""
"And what does that make you? Some kind of heir?""
"It makes me someone you should have stopped lying to.""
Vanessa turned toward Michael.
"You're bringing this man into the family now?""
Michael looked at her.
"He's my brother.""
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
"Half-brother," she corrected.
Daniel stepped forward.
"That's more than you ever gave me.""
The officer moved closer.
"Everyone needs to remain calm.""
Vanessa grabbed her handbag.
"I'm leaving.""
Jonathan held up the court order.
"Not before we clarify the allegations you filed.""
Vanessa looked at him.
"I have nothing to explain.""
Daniel removed a document from his coat.
"Then perhaps you can explain this.""
He placed it on the table.
It was a copy of a bank transfer.
The amount was $175,000.
The recipient account belonged to a company registered under Vanessa's name.
The date matched the transaction Sarah had discovered before her death.
Vanessa stared at the page.
Michael looked at Daniel.
"Where did you get that?""
"Robert's safe deposit box.""
"You found the original records?""
Daniel nodded.
"Not all of them. But enough.""
Jonathan examined the document.
"Mrs. Carter, do you recognize this account?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
Daniel placed another page beside it.
"And this is the transfer authorization.""
Michael looked at the signature.
His own name.
Again.
Forged.
Vanessa finally spoke.
"Those were business expenses.""
"For what business?"" Michael asked.
She looked away.
Daniel pointed to the company name.
"An investment firm that doesn't exist anymore.""
Jonathan looked at Vanessa.
"Who controlled the account?""
She remained silent.
Then the social worker returned.
"Mr. Carter, I need to speak with everyone about what Lily disclosed.""
Vanessa immediately stood.
"She's eight. She doesn't know what she's saying.""
Karen looked at her.
"Mrs. Carter, Lily provided specific information about being denied food and pressured to sign documents.""
"She's repeating things her father told her!""
"I haven't discussed the financial documents with her," Karen replied.
Vanessa's face tightened.
Karen continued.
"I am also concerned that the emergency petition may have been filed using incomplete or misleading information.""
Jonathan nodded.
"We have evidence supporting that concern.""
The officer looked toward Vanessa.
"Ma'am, I'm going to need you to remain here while we clarify a few details.""
Vanessa's expression changed.
"You can't be serious.""
"We need to establish whether the allegations in the petition were knowingly false.""
Vanessa turned toward Michael.
"You think you've won?""
Michael didn't answer.
She leaned closer.
"You haven't even found the original will.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"We found it.""
Vanessa froze.
Michael watched her carefully.
Daniel continued.
"And there's something in it that you clearly don't know.""
Vanessa's voice became quiet.
"What?""
Daniel took a folded document from his coat.
"Your father-in-law left a handwritten amendment.""
Michael looked at him.
"What amendment?""
Daniel placed the paper on the table.
It was dated three days before Arthur Carter died.
The handwriting was shaky, but the words were clear.
I have discovered that Vanessa has been using my estate documents to create false claims against my biological descendants.
I no longer trust her with any financial or legal responsibility.
If she attempts to access the Carter estate after my death, the executor must immediately transfer control to an independent trustee.
Michael looked at the bottom.
His father's signature.
And beneath it, a witness signature.
Margaret Carter.
Vanessa stared at the page.
"That's not real.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Then you'll have no problem with a handwriting examination.""
Vanessa's hands began to shake.
Jonathan carefully placed the document into his folder.
"Where is the original?""
Daniel looked at Michael.
"Still in the safe deposit box.""
"Then why didn't you bring it?""
"Because the bank wouldn't release it without the surviving executor.""
Michael frowned.
"Me?""
Daniel nodded.
"You're named as executor.""
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
It was a sharp, desperate sound.
"You think a piece of paper is going to save you?""
Michael looked at her.
"No. The truth will.""
She stepped toward him.
"You have no idea what your father promised me.""
"What did he promise?""
Vanessa's eyes filled with anger.
"He promised Brandon would never be left with nothing.""
Michael glanced toward the staircase.
"Brandon is a child. If he's entitled to anything, he'll receive it legally.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Your father promised me the house.""
Michael went still.
"What?""
"The house, the business shares, everything. He said it would all be mine if I stayed with him.""
Jonathan frowned.
"Do you have evidence of that agreement?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
Daniel slowly opened his briefcase.
"Actually, I do.""
He removed a small audio recorder.
Michael recognized it immediately.
The same model Robert had used.
Daniel pressed play.
Robert's voice filled the room.
"Vanessa, Arthur never promised you the house. He promised that Brandon would be protected if his identity was verified. You cannot keep pretending Michael's father adopted him.""
Then came Vanessa's voice.
"Arthur is dead. Nobody can prove what he said.""
Robert answered:
"I have the original will.""
A pause.
Then Vanessa said something that made Michael's blood run cold.
"Then you should have destroyed it before Sarah found out.""
The recording ended.
Vanessa lunged toward the recorder.
The police officer immediately stepped between them.
"Ma'am, don't move.""
Vanessa's face twisted.
"That recording is illegal!""
Daniel calmly put the device away.
"Robert recorded his own conversations. My attorney has the original file.""
Jonathan looked at Michael.
"We need to get the original will today.""
Michael nodded.
But Karen Mitchell interrupted.
"Before anyone leaves, I need to discuss the temporary placement arrangements for both children.""
Michael looked at her.
"Both?""
Karen nodded.
"Brandon has also disclosed that he has been told to lie about his parentage and the financial documents.""
Brandon stood at the top of the stairs.
His face was pale.
"Am I going to jail?""
Michael immediately walked toward him.
"No, buddy.""
Brandon's eyes filled.
"Mom said if I told anyone, they'd take me away.""
Michael knelt.
"Nobody is going to punish you for telling the truth.""
Brandon began crying.
"She said Lily was stealing my future.""
Michael put a hand on his shoulder.
"She was wrong.""
For the first time, Brandon looked toward Lily's bedroom.
"Can I tell her I'm sorry?""
Michael nodded.
"Yes.""
The boy walked upstairs.
Michael watched him go.
Then his phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
A message appeared.
*Mr. Carter, my name is Dr. Helen Morris.
I was Sarah's oncologist. She asked me to contact you when Lily turned eight.*
Michael frowned.
Another message arrived.
There is something about your wife's final medical records that you need to know.
His pulse quickened.
He called immediately.
The doctor answered on the second ring.
"Mr. Carter?""
"Yes. What is this about?""
There was a pause.
"Your wife asked me to keep something confidential until Lily's eighth birthday.""
Michael looked toward the staircase.
"What?""
Dr. Morris took a breath.
"Sarah wasn't only worried about Vanessa stealing the inheritance.""
Michael felt his stomach tighten.
"Then what was she worried about?""
The doctor's answer made the room seem to disappear.
"She believed someone had deliberately interfered with her medical treatment.""
Michael gripped the phone.
"Are you saying someone made my wife die?""
"I can't make that accusation without further investigation.""
"Who did she suspect?""
The doctor was silent for several seconds.
Then she said:
"She gave me a name.""
Michael closed his eyes.
"Whose name?""
Dr. Morris whispered:
"Vanessa Carter.""
May you like
And before Michael could respond, the doctor added one final sentence.
"Mr. Carter, Sarah also told me that if anything happened to her, Lily might be the next target.""
