Chapter 5: The Man at the Funeral

Michael barely slept.
At 6:30 the following morning, Lily was eating pancakes at the kitchen island while Brandon sat across from her.
For the first time in months, there was enough food on the table for everyone.
Michael had ordered breakfast from a nearby restaurant.
Lily had asked for extra syrup.
Brandon had requested bacon.
Neither child had spoken much.
Then Brandon pushed his plate away.
"Is my mom coming back?""
Michael looked at him.
"I don't know.""
"Are you going to send me away?""
"No.""
"Even if I'm not really your brother?""
Michael put down his coffee.
"Brandon, listen to me. Whatever happens with the adults, you didn't cause it.""
Brandon stared at the pancakes.
"Mom said Grandpa never wanted you to have everything.""
Michael didn't answer immediately.
He looked at Lily.
She was carefully cutting her pancake into tiny pieces.
"Sweetheart, you don't have to save your food anymore.""
She stopped.
"Can I really have more if I'm hungry?""
"Always.""
She nodded and took another bite.
Michael felt ashamed.
He had spent months believing Lily was simply adjusting to grief.
He had missed the signs because he wasn't there to see them.
His phone rang.
Jonathan.
"We found Daniel.""
Michael stood.
"Where?""
"He's at a law office downtown. He agreed to meet us.""
"Did you speak to him?""
"Briefly. He says he has documents that could explain the entire scheme.""
"What scheme?""
Jonathan hesitated.
"He believes Robert and Vanessa were working together.""
Michael looked toward the staircase.
"Did he say why?""
"Because of your father's estate.""
Michael ended the call and turned to Evelyn, who had arrived early that morning.
"Can you stay with the children?""
"Of course.""
"There's something I need to investigate.""
Evelyn nodded.
"Take Jonathan with you. And Michael, don't make promises to Daniel until we know what he's carrying.""
Michael kissed Lily's forehead.
"I'll be back soon.""
She grabbed his hand.
"Daddy?""
"Yes?""
"Don't let Grandma take Mommy's money.""
He knelt.
"I won't.""
At 9:15, Michael and Jonathan entered a law office on the twenty-third floor of a downtown building.
A man stood beside the window.
He was in his early forties, tall and lean, with dark hair and a narrow scar running along his left cheek.
When he turned, Michael immediately recognized something familiar in his face.
The same eyes as his father.
The same sharp jawline.
Daniel Hensley.
"Michael Carter?""
"Daniel?""
They shook hands.
Daniel's grip was firm, but his expression remained guarded.
"I wasn't sure you'd come.""
"I wasn't sure you existed.""
Daniel gave a humorless laugh.
"That's what my father wanted.""
Michael sat down.
"Why didn't you contact me?""
"I tried.""
"When?""
"After Robert died. I sent a letter to your office.""
Michael looked at Jonathan.
"Did we receive anything?""
Jonathan shook his head.
Daniel opened a briefcase.
"I have a copy.""
He placed an envelope on the table.
Michael recognized his company's address.
The letter had been stamped as delivered.
But someone had written across the front in red ink:
*RETURN TO SENDER.*
Michael looked up.
"Who sent this back?""
Daniel shook his head.
"I don't know. It was returned to my apartment three days later.""
"Why did you want to meet me?""
Daniel removed several documents.
"Because Robert left me something.""
"What?""
"A set of instructions and a collection of financial records.""
Michael leaned forward.
"About the trust?""
"About the trust, your father's company, and Vanessa.""
Daniel spread the documents across the table.
"Robert was your father's accountant for almost thirty years. He knew every asset, every account, every private agreement.""
Michael looked at the papers.
There were bank statements, property records, and copies of handwritten notes.
One page contained a list of transfers.
The dates went back nearly ten years.
Michael's stomach tightened.
"These are payments from my father's company.""
"Yes.""
"Who received them?""
Daniel pointed to the final column.
"Several shell companies. Most were registered to addresses associated with Vanessa.""
Michael stared at the figures.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Then millions.
"How much did they take?""
"That's difficult to calculate. Some of the transfers were legitimate business expenses. Others were not.""
Jonathan examined the records.
"Did Robert keep the original bank statements?""
"Some. Others were destroyed.""
"By whom?""
Daniel looked at Michael.
"Your stepmother.""
Michael clenched his jaw.
"Why would Robert help her?""
Daniel looked away.
"Because he believed he was protecting me.""
Michael frowned.
"What does that mean?""
Daniel took a breath.
"My mother died when I was young. Robert raised me. He always told me your father had abandoned us.""
Michael listened.
"But after Robert got sick, he admitted the truth. Your father had continued sending money. He had even created a trust for me.""
Michael sat back.
"Then why didn't you receive it?""
"Because someone changed the beneficiary records.""
Jonathan leaned forward.
"Who?""
Daniel slid another document across the table.
It contained a signature.
Vanessa Carter.
Michael stared.
"She had no authority to do this.""
"Exactly.""
Daniel continued.
"Robert helped her. He told me it was temporary. He said he was protecting the family from a scandal.""
Michael's voice hardened.
"And you believed him?""
"I was twenty-two. I had no money, no family, and no idea how complicated everything was.""
Daniel paused.
"Then Sarah contacted me.""
Michael looked up.
"What did she say?""
"She asked whether I knew my father had kept a separate set of financial records.""
"Did you?""
"No. I thought everything had been destroyed.""
Daniel opened another folder.
"She told me she had found a discrepancy in Lily's trust.""
Michael felt his throat tighten.
"What discrepancy?""
Daniel pointed to a transaction.
"An investment account was opened using Sarah's personal identification. Money from the trust was transferred into it.""
Michael stared at the amount.
$175,000.
"When?""
"Two months before Sarah died.""
Michael shook his head.
"She never told me.""
"She was trying to find out who was responsible.""
Jonathan examined the account number.
"Who owned this account?""
Daniel pointed to the beneficiary line.
Michael read it.
*Brandon Carter.*
He felt his stomach turn.
"Why Brandon?""
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Because Vanessa believed he was entitled to your father's estate.""
"He's not.""
"That depends on who his biological father is.""
Michael stared at him.
"Margaret told me my father had another son. She said it was you.""
Daniel nodded.
"That's true.""
"Then who is Brandon's father?""
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
"Robert.""
Michael stood.
"What?""
"Robert Hensley was Brandon's biological father.""
The room fell silent.
Michael slowly sat down.
He thought about the marriage certificate.
Vanessa's relationship with Robert.
The secret child.
The forged documents.
Everything was beginning to connect.
"Why did she tell Brandon that my father was his father?""
"Because she wanted him to believe he had a claim to the Carter estate.""
Michael stared at Daniel.
"Did Robert know?""
"Yes.""
"Then why didn't he stop her?""
Daniel looked down.
"Because he was afraid of losing his son.""
Michael rubbed his face.
"Brandon is Robert's son?""
Daniel nodded.
"Robert was involved with Vanessa before she married your father. They had Brandon. Then she married your father and claimed the boy was his.""
Michael remembered the photograph.
The courthouse.
The marriage certificate.
The dates.
He felt sick.
"So my father raised another man's child.""
"Yes.""
"And Vanessa used that lie to steal from Lily.""
Daniel didn't answer.
Jonathan gathered the papers.
"These records are important. We need certified copies and a formal statement.""
Daniel nodded.
"I expected that.""
Michael looked at him.
"Why are you helping us now?""
Daniel's expression changed.
"Because Sarah asked me to.""
He reached into his briefcase and pulled out a small envelope.
"She gave me this six weeks before she died.""
Michael took it.
His wife's handwriting covered the front.
*For Michael, if Vanessa makes another move.*
He opened it.
Inside was a photograph of Sarah standing beside Daniel.
On the back, she had written:
Michael, if Daniel gives you this photograph, it means I wasn't able to tell you everything myself.
Trust him.
He knows where the original deed is.
Michael looked up.
"Where?""
Daniel pointed toward the document folder.
"Your father's old safe deposit box.""
Michael frowned.
"At which bank?""
Daniel slid over a small card.
It carried the name of a bank in another state.
And a box number.
Jonathan examined it.
"This could contain the original trust documents.""
Michael stood.
"Then we're going.""
Daniel shook his head.
"There's one more thing.""
Michael turned.
"What?""
Daniel looked directly at him.
"Robert didn't die of natural causes.""
Michael froze.
"What did you say?""
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"The medical report says heart failure. But Robert was perfectly healthy three months earlier.""
"Are you suggesting—"
"I'm saying that two days before he died, he told me he was afraid Vanessa would kill him if he revealed what happened.""
Michael felt the room go cold.
"Did you report this?""
"I tried. But the police said there was no evidence of foul play.""
Jonathan stepped forward.
"Do you have anything to support that statement?""
Daniel removed a small digital recorder.
"Robert gave me this.""
He pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then a familiar voice emerged.
Robert Hensley.
"If anything happens to me, look at Vanessa's bank records. She knows about the original deed. She knows what Sarah discovered. And she knows that the child—"
The recording stopped.
Michael stared.
"What child?""
Daniel pressed the button again.
Nothing.
"The rest of the file is corrupted.""
Michael looked at Jonathan.
"Can it be recovered?""
"We'll have it examined.""
Daniel stood.
"I think you should hear something else.""
He removed a final document from the folder.
It was a photocopy of a handwritten note.
The note was dated two weeks before Robert died.
The handwriting was unmistakably Vanessa's.
The girl must sign before her ninth birthday. If Michael returns early, move the documents. Brandon must receive the property before Daniel makes a claim.
Michael read it again.
Then he looked at Daniel.
"Why would she mention you?""
Daniel's expression became grim.
"Because Robert told her I had discovered the original will.""
Michael stared.
"What original will?""
Daniel slid another page across the table.
At the top were the words:
*LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF ARTHUR CARTER.*
His father.
Michael began reading.
The first paragraph named him as executor.
The second established separate provisions for his children.
Then he reached the final section.
His eyes stopped.
He read it once.
Then again.
According to the document, the Carter estate had not been left entirely to Michael.
His father had established a protected inheritance for every biological descendant.
Including Lily.
Including Daniel.
And including Brandon.
But there was a condition.
The children would only inherit if they were legally recognized and their identities were verified.
Michael looked at the date.
The document had been signed and witnessed.
But the final page contained something else.
A handwritten amendment.
*In the event that any child is deliberately excluded through fraud, the entire estate shall be placed under independent guardianship until all claims are resolved.*
Michael slowly lifted his eyes.
"Vanessa knew about this.""
Daniel nodded.
"That's why she wanted Lily to sign away her interest.""
Jonathan examined the document.
"There's a problem.""
"What?""
"This appears to be a copy, not the original.""
Daniel looked at him.
"Robert said the original was in the safe deposit box.""
Michael grabbed his coat.
"Then let's get it.""
But as they reached the office door, Michael's phone rang.
Evelyn.
He answered immediately.
"What's wrong?""
Her voice was tense.
"Michael, you need to come home.""
"Why?""
"Vanessa is here.""
"She isn't supposed to be near Lily.""
"I know. But that's not the worst part.""
Michael tightened his grip on the phone.
"What happened?""
Evelyn lowered her voice.
"She arrived with a social worker and a police officer. She's claiming you are emotionally unstable and that Lily is in immediate danger with you.""
Michael stopped walking.
"She's trying to take my daughter?""
"Yes.""
May you like
Then Evelyn said something that made his blood run cold.
"She has a court order.""
