Chapter 2: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

Michael didn't remember driving back to the house.

He remembered Lily sitting beside him, clutching her stuffed rabbit.

He remembered her asking twice whether he was angry.

And he remembered promising her that nobody would ever punish her for telling the truth.

When they reached the driveway, every light in the house was still on.

Vanessa's black SUV sat beneath the garage.

Michael checked the clock.

8:47 p.m.

He called his attorney again.

This time, Jonathan Pierce answered.

"Michael? It's nearly nine. What's happened?""

"I need you at my house. Tonight.""

"Is Lily all right?""

"She's with me. Vanessa has been making her sign documents. Someone submitted a request to withdraw money from her trust using a forged signature. And apparently, I'm dead.""

There was silence.

Then Jonathan said, "Don't confront Vanessa until I get there.""

"Why?""

"Because if what you're telling me is true, we need to preserve evidence.""

Michael looked toward the kitchen window.

A shadow moved behind the curtains.

"She has been abusing my daughter.""

"I understand. But listen carefully. Don't let her destroy anything.

Don't touch the paperwork unless necessary. I'm bringing another attorney.""

Michael ended the call.

He opened the rear door and helped Lily out.

"Stay close to me, okay?""

She nodded.

As they entered the house, Vanessa appeared at the top of the staircase.

Her expression changed when she saw Lily.

"Why did you bring her back?""

Michael didn't answer.

Vanessa descended slowly.

"She's supposed to be in bed.""

"Where are the papers?""

"What papers?""

"The ones you made my daughter sign.""

Vanessa laughed.

"Michael, you're exhausted. You've been traveling all day.""

"Don't play games with me.""

Brandon appeared behind her.

"Mom, is Dad mad?""

Vanessa placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Go to your room.""

"But I want to watch—"

"Now.""

Michael looked at the boy.

"Brandon, did you know Lily was being made to sign documents?""

Brandon's face went pale.

Vanessa stepped between them.

"Don't involve my son in your ridiculous accusations.""

Michael reached for his phone.

"I'm calling the police.""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"Then perhaps I should tell them what you've been doing.""

Michael stopped.

"What?""

She folded her arms.

"Leaving an eight-year-old child with me for months while you disappear into hotels and boardrooms. Maybe they'll be interested in that.""

"You were paid to care for her.""

"I did more than that. I raised her.""

"You fed her garbage.""

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"She exaggerates everything.""

Lily moved closer to Michael.

Vanessa noticed.

"See? This is what I mean. She has learned to manipulate you.""

Michael crouched beside his daughter.

"Sweetheart, go wait in the car. Lock the doors.""

Vanessa immediately objected.

"She is not going anywhere!""

Michael looked at her.

"Watch me.""

He walked Lily outside, waited until she was safely inside the locked vehicle, and returned to the house.

Then he went straight to the kitchen.

The tablecloth was still hanging over the table.

He lifted it.

Nothing.

The stack of papers was gone.

Michael turned toward Vanessa.

"Where are they?""

She continued wiping the counter.

"I don't know what you're talking about.""

"You know exactly what I'm talking about.""

"I cleaned the table.""

"Where did you put them?""

"Recycling.""

Michael stared at her.

"Which bin?""

Vanessa shrugged.

"Probably outside.""

He rushed through the back door.

The recycling bins stood beside the garage.

He opened the first one.

Empty food containers.

Cardboard boxes.

Old newspapers.

Then he saw a torn sheet of paper near the bottom.

It was covered in handwriting.

Lily's handwriting.

He carefully lifted it.

At the top was a printed heading:

*DECLARATION OF BENEFICIAL INTEREST TRANSFER.*

Below it were several paragraphs of legal language.

At the bottom, someone had written:

Michael Carter.

The handwriting was shaky, but unmistakably childish.

Michael turned the page.

There were dozens of practice signatures.

Some were written in blue crayon.

Others in pencil.

One had been traced so many times that the paper had almost torn.

His stomach turned.

Beneath the pages was a small sheet covered in sentences.

I am Lily Carter.

I understand that Mommy's money belongs to Daddy.

I want Grandma Vanessa to take care of the money.

I do not want to keep the house.

Michael read the last sentence twice.

I promise not to tell Daddy because he will get angry.

He gripped the paper.

Behind him, Vanessa spoke.

"You shouldn't be going through my trash.""

Michael turned.

"Why did you make her write this?""

Vanessa looked at the page.

For the first time, her face showed something close to fear.

Then she recovered.

"She was practicing her handwriting.""

"For what?""

"School.""

"Don't lie to me.""

Vanessa snatched the paper.

"You're acting insane.""

Michael grabbed her wrist before she could tear it.

"Give it back.""

"Let go!""

She pulled away and the paper fell to the ground.

Brandon appeared in the doorway.

"Mom?""

Vanessa immediately pointed at Michael.

"Look what he's doing! He's threatening me!""

Michael stepped away.

"I'm not touching you.""

"You're frightening my son!""

"Then stop lying in front of him.""

Brandon looked between them.

"Mom, are you going to get the money?""

Vanessa went completely still.

Michael slowly turned toward the boy.

"What money?""

Brandon's face changed.

"Nothing.""

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

"Go upstairs!""

"But you said when the money comes, we're moving to the big house.""

Michael felt his chest tighten.

"What big house?""

Brandon looked down.

Vanessa pulled him toward the staircase.

"Enough!""

Michael photographed the papers with his phone.

Then he sent the images to Jonathan.

A message arrived almost immediately.

Do not let her access Lily's documents or accounts. I'm ten minutes away.

Michael returned to the kitchen.

Vanessa was standing beside the counter with her phone.

Her fingers moved rapidly across the screen.

"Who are you texting?""

"My lawyer.""

Michael frowned.

"Your lawyer?""

"Yes. Because you've become impossible to deal with.""

"Good. Tell them to explain why you filed a document claiming I'm dead.""

Her face drained of color.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Vanessa placed her phone down.

"You don't understand what happened.""

"Then explain it.""

"Sarah made everything complicated.""

Michael felt the room tilt.

"Don't bring my wife into this.""

"She left a fortune to a child who can't even manage her own breakfast!""

"That fortune belongs to Lily.""

"She doesn't need millions of dollars!""

"That's not your decision.""

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"Of course. Everything is about Lily.""

Michael stared at her.

"What does that mean?""

"Your father spent years making sure Brandon had nothing. Then Sarah came along and made sure Lily had everything.""

"Brandon is not entitled to Sarah's money.""

"He's your family!""

"So is Lily!""

Vanessa's voice rose.

"Brandon deserves a future too!""

Michael looked at the staircase.

He could hear Brandon moving around upstairs.

"Did you use my daughter's inheritance to pay for his expenses?""

Vanessa said nothing.

"Did you?""

"I borrowed a little.""

"How much?""

"You're exaggerating.""

"How much, Vanessa?""

She looked away.

"Two hundred thousand.""

Michael felt his knees weaken.

"Two hundred thousand dollars?""

"It was temporary!""

"From Lily's trust?""

"I intended to replace it!""

"With what?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with anger.

"You have no idea how much I've sacrificed.""

Michael stared at her.

He had trusted this woman with his daughter.

And she had taken money from the little girl who had lost her mother.

A knock sounded at the front door.

Jonathan had arrived.

Behind him stood a woman Michael recognized from his law firm's litigation department.

Her name was Evelyn Brooks.

She carried a leather briefcase and wore a dark navy coat.

"Michael," Jonathan said, stepping inside.

"Where is Lily?""

"In the car.""

"Bring her in. I want her somewhere safe.""

Evelyn looked at Vanessa.

"Mrs. Carter, I'm going to ask you not to destroy or remove any documents from this property.""

Vanessa laughed.

"Who are you?""

"Evelyn Brooks. I represent Mr. Carter and his daughter.""

Vanessa's expression tightened.

"His daughter has a legal guardian.""

Evelyn opened her briefcase.

"Actually, she has a father.""

She removed a document and placed it on the kitchen island.

"Mr. Carter, before we discuss anything else, I need to see the original trust agreement and the documents submitted to the bank.""

Michael handed her his phone.

Evelyn examined the photographs.

Her expression became increasingly serious.

"Who witnessed these signatures?""

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"I don't have to answer that.""

Evelyn looked at Jonathan.

"Call the bank. Ask them to preserve the original submission, including all electronic records and identity verification.""

Jonathan nodded and stepped away.

Evelyn returned her attention to Michael.

"Did you sign anything authorizing Vanessa to act on your behalf?""

"No.""

"Did you give her power of attorney?""

"Absolutely not.""

"Did you authorize a transfer from Lily's trust?""

"Never.""

Evelyn lowered her voice.

"Then we have a serious problem.""

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

"You people are making a mistake. Michael knows exactly what he agreed to.""

Michael turned.

"What did I agree to?""

Vanessa looked at him with a cold smile.

"You signed the documents before Sarah died.""

Michael frowned.

"What documents?""

She reached into her handbag and pulled out a folded sheet.

Then she placed it on the counter.

Michael recognized the signature at the bottom.

It looked like his.

But he had never seen the document before.

At the top, the heading read:

*TEMPORARY DELEGATION OF FINANCIAL AUTHORITY.*

His eyes moved down the page.

The document supposedly gave Vanessa the authority to manage certain aspects of Lily's estate if he became incapacitated or unavailable.

Michael stared at the signature.

It was a remarkably convincing imitation.

"Where did you get this?""

Vanessa smiled.

"From your files.""

"I never signed it.""

"Then prove it.""

Evelyn picked up the document.

"May I?""

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she released it.

Evelyn studied the signature and the printed date.

"Mr. Carter, do you recognize the notary?""

Michael looked at the bottom.

A name appeared beside a circular stamp.

*Robert Hensley.*

He knew the name.

Robert had been his father's longtime accountant.

He had also attended Sarah's funeral.

"That's impossible," Michael whispered.

Evelyn looked up.

"Why?""

"Robert died four months ago.""

Nobody moved.

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

Evelyn carefully placed the document into a protective folder.

"Well," she said quietly, "that changes everything.""

Michael looked at Vanessa.

For the first time that evening, she appeared genuinely frightened.

But before he could ask another question, his phone vibrated.

A message from Daniel Reeves appeared.

Mr. Carter, we found the original transfer instructions. There is a second beneficiary listed.

Michael opened the attachment.

He read the name.

Then he read it again.

*BRANDON CARTER.*

His twelve-year-old stepson.

The boy who had been eating steak while Lily scraped leftovers from an old container.

Michael looked toward the staircase.

"Vanessa," he said quietly.

She didn't answer.

"How long have you been planning to give my daughter's inheritance to Brandon?""

Vanessa's face hardened.

May you like

Then she said something Michael would never forget.

"Since the day Sarah told me Lily would inherit everything.""
