Chapter 7: The Secret Behind Sarah's Death

For several seconds, Michael couldn't speak.

He stood in the middle of his living room, holding his phone against his ear, while the woman who had treated his wife for nearly a year told him something he had never imagined hearing.

Someone might have interfered with Sarah's medical treatment.

And Sarah had suspected Vanessa.

"Dr. Morris," Michael finally said, his voice barely recognizable.

"Are you telling me my wife was murdered?""

"I'm telling you that Sarah raised concerns about unusual changes in her medication records.""

"What changes?""

"Several prescriptions were modified during the final weeks of her treatment. The changes appeared to have been authorized by her medical team, but Sarah questioned whether the instructions had come from her.""

Michael gripped the edge of the kitchen counter.

"Why wasn't I told?""

"Because Sarah specifically asked us not to contact you until she was ready.""

"She was dying. I was her husband!""

"I understand, Mr. Carter.""

"No, you don't.""

His voice cracked.

"You watched her get weaker every day. You watched me sit beside her hospital bed, holding her hand, promising her everything would be okay. And now you're telling me somebody might have made it worse?""

There was silence.

Then Dr. Morris spoke gently.

"Sarah didn't want you investigating while she was alive. She was afraid that whoever was involved might retaliate against Lily.""

Michael closed his eyes.

"Did she name Vanessa?""

"She told me she had reason to believe Vanessa had accessed her medical portal.""

Michael felt sick.

"Do you have proof?""

"I have records. Login histories, prescription changes, and a message Sarah sent me two days before she died.""

"Send everything to my attorney.""

"I already contacted the hospital's compliance department. They are preserving the records.""

Michael looked toward the staircase.

Lily was upstairs with Brandon.

His daughter had been eating scraps while Vanessa manipulated her inheritance.

And now there was a possibility that Vanessa had played a role in his wife's death.

"Dr. Morris," he whispered, "what did Sarah tell you about Lily?""

The doctor's voice became quieter.

"She said Vanessa had become obsessed with the trust. She believed that if Sarah died, she would have an opportunity to gain control of Lily's inheritance.""

Michael ended the call.

For several seconds, he stood completely still.

Then Jonathan approached.

"Michael?""

He handed him the phone.

"Sarah suspected Vanessa interfered with her treatment.""

Jonathan's expression changed.

"What?""

"Her oncologist has records.""

Evelyn, who was standing near the dining room, immediately looked up.

"Are you saying there may have been medical misconduct?""

"Yes.""

Jonathan lowered his voice.

"Don't confront Vanessa with that information. We need the original medical records and an independent investigation.""

Michael laughed bitterly.

"How much more evidence do we need?""

"Enough to prove what happened.""

A door creaked upstairs.

Lily appeared at the top of the staircase.

"Daddy?""

Michael immediately softened his expression.

"Come here, sweetheart.""

She descended slowly.

"Are you crying?""

He knelt.

"No, baby.""

She touched his cheek.

"Your eyes are wet.""

Michael pulled her into his arms.

He wanted to tell her everything.

He wanted to explain that her mother had fought to protect her until her final breath.

But Lily was eight.

She had already carried too much fear.

So he kissed her forehead.

"Mommy loved you more than anything.""

Lily nodded.

"I know.""

Then she whispered:

"Grandma said Mommy would have lived longer if she hadn't spent so much money on me.""

Michael felt his heart stop.

"What?""

Lily looked down.

"She said Mommy got sick because she was always worrying about my future.""

Michael held her tighter.

"Listen to me. Your mother never blamed you for anything. She loved taking care of you. And being your mother was the happiest thing in her life.""

Lily began to cry.

"I miss her.""

"I know, sweetheart.""

"I want her to come home.""

Michael closed his eyes.

"Me too.""

At noon, Michael and Jonathan met Dr. Helen Morris at the hospital.

She brought a thick folder and a hospital-issued tablet.

"I want to be very clear," she began.

"At this stage, we have identified irregularities. We have not established that anyone intentionally caused harm.""

Michael nodded.

"Show me.""

Dr. Morris opened the records.

"Sarah was receiving a combination of medications. Some were standard for her treatment. Others were intended to manage complications.""

She displayed a series of prescription entries.

"On three occasions, medication instructions were changed using a login associated with Sarah's patient account.""

"Was it her login?""

"Not necessarily. Someone used a device that had previously been authorized to access her records.""

Michael frowned.

"Whose device?""

Dr. Morris hesitated.

"The device was registered under Vanessa Carter's email address.""

Michael stood.

Jonathan immediately placed a hand on his arm.

"Sit down.""

Michael forced himself back into the chair.

"How did she get access?""

"Sarah had previously allowed Vanessa to help with appointment scheduling. That access should not have permitted changes to treatment instructions.""

"Then how did she do it?""

"We're investigating.""

Dr. Morris turned another page.

"There's something else.""

She displayed a message.

It had been sent from Sarah's patient portal two days before her death.

I believe someone is changing my medication instructions without my permission. I don't feel safe discussing this over the phone. Please preserve all records.

Michael stared at the screen.

He remembered that week.

Sarah had been unusually quiet.

He had been busy arranging a major company acquisition and had spent most evenings taking calls in the hospital corridor.

One night, she had asked him to stay.

He had promised he would return after a meeting.

But by the time he came back, she had fallen asleep.

He had kissed her forehead and whispered that everything would be okay.

Now those memories felt unbearable.

"Why didn't anyone call me?"" he asked.

Dr. Morris looked down.

"Sarah specifically requested that we first verify the access records. She was afraid of creating a confrontation without evidence.""

"She should have told me.""

"Perhaps she wanted to protect you.""

Michael stared at the message.

Then he noticed the timestamp.

The message had been sent at 11:42 p.m.

That was the night Vanessa had called him and insisted he return to the hospital because Sarah was becoming confused.

Michael remembered arriving to find Vanessa sitting beside the bed.

She had told him Sarah was hallucinating.

She had told him his wife was frightened and needed rest.

And she had insisted that he go home because Lily needed someone to look after her.

Michael looked at Jonathan.

"Can we get the hospital security footage?""

Dr. Morris nodded.

"Some footage may still be available. The hospital has been instructed to preserve it.""

Jonathan leaned forward.

"Was Vanessa present during the medication changes?""

Dr. Morris checked her notes.

"She visited Sarah on all three dates.""

Michael felt his stomach turn.

"Can you identify the person who accessed the medication records?""

"Not yet. But we can request a forensic examination of the devices involved.""

That evening, Daniel arrived at Michael's house carrying a sealed envelope.

"I found something in Robert's safe deposit box.""

Michael looked at him.

"What?""

Daniel placed the envelope on the table.

"Robert kept copies of Vanessa's correspondence.""

Jonathan opened it carefully.

Inside were printed emails, bank records, and several handwritten notes.

One email was dated four months before Sarah died.

The sender was Vanessa.

The recipient was Robert Hensley.

Sarah is becoming suspicious. She has started asking questions about the trust. If she gets to Michael first, everything we've arranged could fall apart.

Robert's response was brief.

You need to stop contacting her medical providers. This has gone too far.

Michael read the sentence twice.

Then he looked at Daniel.

"What does this mean?""

Daniel shook his head.

"I don't know. But there's more.""

He removed another page.

It contained a handwritten note.

Once Sarah is gone, Michael will be too distracted to notice the financial changes. The girl will be easy to control.

Michael's hands began shaking.

Jonathan took the page.

"This is potentially significant evidence. We need to verify its origin.""

Michael looked at the final sheet.

It was a printed email from an unknown account.

The medication adjustments have been handled. Do not contact me again.

There was no name.

Only a date and time.

Michael looked at Daniel.

"Did Robert keep the original email?""

"No. Just this copy.""

Before Jonathan could respond, Evelyn rushed into the room.

"Michael, there's a problem.""

He stood.

"What happened?""

"Vanessa's attorney contacted the bank.""

"Why?""

"He's demanding access to Lily's trust under the emergency guardianship order.""

Michael felt his jaw tighten.

"But the transfer was frozen.""

"He's arguing that Vanessa has temporary authority to manage Lily's assets.""

Jonathan immediately picked up his phone.

"That order doesn't give her financial authority.""

"I know," Evelyn replied.

"But there's another issue.""

She handed Michael a printed document.

It was a new court filing.

The title read:

*PETITION FOR PERMANENT GUARDIANSHIP AND FINANCIAL CONSERVATORSHIP.*

Vanessa was asking the court to remove Michael as Lily's legal and financial guardian.

And she had attached a letter supposedly written by Sarah.

Michael read the first paragraph.

His blood ran cold.

The letter claimed Sarah had wanted Vanessa to become Lily's permanent guardian.

It also stated that Michael was emotionally incapable of managing his daughter's inheritance.

Michael stared at the signature.

It looked exactly like Sarah's.

But the date was wrong.

He turned the page.

At the bottom was a handwritten sentence.

I trust Vanessa to make the decisions I can no longer make.

Michael's vision blurred.

Then he noticed something else.

The letter had been notarized by Robert Hensley.

The same man who had supposedly died four months earlier.

Jonathan examined the document.

"This is a serious problem.""

Michael looked up.

"Why?""

"Because if Vanessa can convince the court this letter is authentic, she'll have a much stronger argument for guardianship.""

Michael stared at the signature.

He knew Sarah's handwriting.

He knew the way she crossed her T's and formed the letter S.

But something about this document felt wrong.

Then he remembered the flash drive.

Sarah had left it specifically for him.

He looked at Jonathan.

"Play the files.""

Jonathan hesitated.

"We haven't completed the forensic examination.""

"I don't care. We need to know what she left.""

Jonathan opened his laptop and connected the drive through a secure forensic device.

Several folders appeared.

One was labeled:

*MEDICAL RECORDS.*

Another:

*TRUST DOCUMENTS.*

The final folder contained a single video.

Its filename was:

*FOR MICHAEL AND LILY.*

Michael stared at it.

Then he clicked.

Sarah appeared on the screen.

She was sitting in their bedroom, wearing the blue sweater Michael had given her for their anniversary.

Her face was thinner than he remembered.

But her eyes were bright.

"Michael," she began softly, "if you're watching this, it means I wasn't able to explain everything before I left.""

Michael's knees weakened.

He pulled a chair closer.

Sarah smiled faintly.

"I hope you're taking care of our little girl.""

Michael covered his mouth.

Then Sarah's expression changed.

"There's something you need to know about Vanessa. And it isn't just the money.""

She paused.

"I found out who helped her access my medical records.""

Michael leaned closer.

Sarah looked directly into the camera.

"It was someone you trust.""

Then the screen went black.

And a second video began playing automatically.

This time, Sarah wasn't alone.

A man sat beside her.

Michael recognized him immediately.

His own father.

Arthur Carter.

But Arthur had been dead for almost two years.

May you like

And Sarah's final words on the recording were:

"Michael, your father knew Vanessa's secret long before either of us did.""
