Chapter 3: The Letter Sarah Hid

At 10:16 p.m., Evelyn Brooks made the first call to the police.

At 10:19, she instructed the bank to freeze all pending transfers.

At 10:23, Jonathan Pierce requested an emergency preservation order for every document connected to Lily's trust.

But Michael barely heard any of it.

He was sitting on the living room sofa with Lily curled against his side.

Her stuffed rabbit rested in her lap.

She had refused to let go of his hand.

Across the room, Vanessa stood beside the fireplace, speaking angrily into her phone.

"This is ridiculous," she said.

"I am not being treated like a criminal in my own home.""

Evelyn looked up from her paperwork.

"Mrs. Carter, this isn't your home.""

Vanessa lowered the phone.

"Excuse me?""

"The property belongs to Michael Carter. You have no ownership interest in it.""

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

Michael looked at her.

"Pack your things.""

She laughed.

"You can't be serious.""

"You will not be alone with Lily again.""

"I have nowhere to go!""

"That's not my daughter's problem.""

Vanessa stepped closer.

"After everything I've done for you?""

Michael stood.

"What exactly have you done for me?""

"I kept this family together!""

"You made my daughter afraid to eat.""

"She is a difficult child!""

"She's eight years old!""

Vanessa pointed toward Lily.

"She's spoiled. Sarah made sure of that.""

Michael moved between them.

"Don't say my wife's name.""

Vanessa lowered her voice.

"Sarah was never honest with you.""

Michael froze.

"What?""

She looked at him.

"Maybe you should ask what she knew about the money before she died.""

Evelyn immediately stepped forward.

"Mrs. Carter, I strongly advise you to stop making statements.""

Vanessa ignored her.

"Sarah knew there were problems with the trust. She knew the money wasn't going to be as protected as she wanted.""

Michael felt a chill move through him.

"You're lying.""

"Am I?""

"Sarah trusted the attorneys.""

"Sarah trusted everyone. That was her problem.""

Michael took a step toward her.

"What did you do?""

Vanessa picked up her handbag.

"Nothing you can prove.""

Evelyn blocked the hallway.

"You're not leaving with any documents belonging to this household.""

Vanessa stared at her.

"You cannot detain me.""

"No one is detaining you. But if you remove or destroy evidence, that may create another legal problem.""

Jonathan returned from the dining room.

"The bank has confirmed the transfer request was submitted through an account using Michael's identity.""

"Can they identify who submitted it?"" Michael asked.

"Not yet. But the electronic submission originated from a device registered to this property.""

Everyone turned toward Vanessa.

She gave a sharp laugh.

"Lots of people use the Wi-Fi.""

Jonathan continued.

"There is another issue. The transfer request included a certificate of death.""

Michael felt his stomach tighten.

"A certificate of death?""

"Yes. It identifies you as having died on October fourteenth.""

"That's impossible. I was in Chicago on October fourteenth.""

"I know. We have your hotel records and flight information.""

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"Maybe someone made a mistake.""

Evelyn looked directly at her.

"A mistake doesn't usually include a forged medical certification and an altered government record.""

For the first time, Vanessa had nothing to say.

Then Lily tugged at Michael's sleeve.

"Daddy?""

He turned immediately.

"Yes, baby?""

"Can we go upstairs?""

"Of course.""

She hesitated.

"Can we go to Mommy's room?""

Michael looked toward the hallway.

Sarah's bedroom had remained almost untouched since her death.

He had kept the door closed because every time he entered, the scent of her perfume brought back memories he wasn't ready to face.

But Lily wanted to go there.

And tonight, nothing was more important.

"Yes," he whispered.

"Let's go.""

He carried her upstairs.

Sarah's room smelled faintly of lavender.

Her books were still arranged on the nightstand. A cream-colored scarf hung over the chair, and her wedding photograph stood beside the bed.

Lily walked to the wardrobe.

"Mommy used to hide things here.""

Michael knelt beside her.

"What things?""

"Letters.""

She opened the bottom drawer and pulled out a small wooden box.

Michael recognized it.

Sarah had kept old photographs, jewelry, and birthday cards inside.

Lily lifted the lid.

There were several envelopes.

One was addressed in Sarah's handwriting.

*For Michael. Open only when Lily turns eight.*

His hands began to shake.

"Is this the letter Grandma took?""

Lily nodded.

"She said Mommy wrote something bad about her.""

Michael carefully opened the envelope.

Inside was a folded sheet of paper and a small flash drive.

He unfolded the letter.

My Michael,

If you're reading this, Lily has turned eight, and I hope you've found your way through the hardest part of losing me.

I know you. You'll try to make everything perfect for her. You'll work too much. You'll convince yourself that money can replace the time you spend away.

Please don't make that mistake.

Lily doesn't need a perfect house. She needs her father.

Michael stopped reading.

His eyes blurred.

He could almost hear Sarah saying those words.

He sat on the edge of the bed and pressed the paper against his chest.

Lily climbed beside him.

"Is Mommy talking to you?""

Michael kissed the top of her head.

"Yes, sweetheart.""

He continued.

There is something else you need to know.

Before I became ill, I discovered irregularities in the accounts connected to your father's estate. I initially thought they were accounting errors.

Then I discovered that Vanessa had been accessing documents she had no right to see.

I confronted her.

She denied everything.

But two days later, I found a letter in my study that changed everything.

Michael stopped.

He read the next paragraph twice.

Vanessa was not simply interested in our money. She was trying to gain control of the trust by using a document connected to your father's previous marriage.

I don't know how much she has already taken. I don't know who is helping her.

But I know she is dangerous when she believes she has something to lose.

Michael looked toward the bedroom door.

Downstairs, Vanessa's voice rose again.

He returned to the letter.

I have left evidence on the flash drive. Please give it to Jonathan Pierce. Do not give it to anyone else.

And Michael, one more thing.

If Vanessa ever tells you that I wanted Brandon to receive Lily's inheritance, remember this: I would never have taken anything away from our daughter.

Not while I was alive.

Not after I was gone.

I love you both.

Sarah.

Michael stared at the final line.

Then he noticed something written on the back of the letter.

A short sentence.

In Sarah's handwriting.

*The original deed is not in the house. Look where your father kept the blue watch.*

Michael frowned.

His father had owned a small collection of watches.

One in particular had been kept in a wooden display case in his old study.

The blue watch.

It had belonged to Michael's grandfather.

After his father died, Michael had moved the collection into storage.

Or so he thought.

He turned to Lily.

"Do you know where Grandma keeps the little room beside the laundry?""

Lily nodded.

"Yes.""

"Can you show me?""

She looked frightened.

"Grandma said I shouldn't go there.""

Michael held her face gently.

"You're not going to get in trouble.""

Lily nodded.

They returned downstairs.

Jonathan and Evelyn were still in the living room.

Michael showed them Sarah's letter.

Jonathan read it carefully.

When he reached the reference to the blue watch, his expression changed.

"Michael, we need to find that flash drive.""

"It's right here.""

Jonathan held out his hand.

"Don't plug it into your computer. We'll have it examined properly.""

Michael gave it to him.

Evelyn examined the envelope.

"Sarah clearly anticipated something like this.""

"She knew Vanessa was stealing?""

"She suspected financial misconduct. That's different. We need to establish exactly what happened.""

Michael looked toward the laundry room.

"I want to find the original deed.""

Jonathan shook his head.

"Not alone.""

"I won't let this wait.""

"Michael, if Sarah was right, there may be evidence of a much larger fraud.""

Michael looked at Lily.

"Then we find it tonight.""

They walked toward the narrow room beside the laundry.

The door was locked.

Michael tried the handle.

Nothing.

"Vanessa has the key," Lily whispered.

Evelyn turned.

"How do you know?""

"She keeps it in her purse.""

Michael looked back toward the living room.

Vanessa was sitting on the sofa, typing on her phone.

Her handbag rested beside her.

Evelyn walked over.

"Mrs. Carter, may I ask you to hand over your house keys?""

Vanessa looked up.

"Why?""

"We need to inspect the locked storage room.""

"No.""

Jonathan stepped forward.

"Vanessa, refusing to cooperate will only make this worse.""

She stood.

"You have no right to search my belongings.""

Evelyn held up Sarah's letter.

"Your stepson has a document indicating that evidence connected to his daughter's inheritance may be hidden on this property.""

Vanessa stared at the letter.

Her face changed.

"You opened that?""

Michael stepped forward.

"Why? What are you afraid we'll find?""

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

"Sarah was paranoid.""

"Then you have nothing to worry about.""

Vanessa looked at the handbag.

For a brief moment, Michael thought she might hand over the keys.

Instead, she grabbed the bag and moved toward the staircase.

Evelyn blocked her.

"Please don't make this harder than it needs to be.""

Vanessa shouted, "Get out of my way!""

Lily flinched.

Michael immediately covered her ears.

"Enough!"" he shouted.

Vanessa stopped.

He looked at her with a coldness he had never felt before.

"You will not frighten my daughter again.""

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Brandon appeared at the top of the staircase.

He was holding a small silver key.

"Mom?""

Vanessa turned.

"Go back upstairs.""

Brandon looked at Michael.

"Is this about the papers?""

Vanessa's face went white.

"Brandon, don't.""

The boy descended slowly.

"I found something in your room.""

He held out the key.

Michael took it.

"Where did you find this?""

"In Mom's jewelry box.""

Vanessa rushed toward him.

"Give me that!""

Brandon stepped backward.

"Why? You told me it was important.""

Michael looked at the key.

A small blue tag hung from it.

On the tag were two handwritten words.

*BLUE WATCH.*

Jonathan took a breath.

"Well, that's convenient.""

Michael walked to the locked storage room.

He inserted the key.

It turned.

The door opened with a soft click.

Inside were old boxes, suitcases, and several plastic storage containers.

At the back stood a narrow wooden cabinet.

Michael opened it.

There was no watch.

Instead, he found a black folder containing bank statements, photocopies of legal documents, and a small envelope.

The envelope bore his father's handwriting.

*For Michael.*

He opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

It showed his father standing beside a younger Vanessa outside a courthouse.

On the back, someone had written a date.

And beneath it:

*The day she became his legal wife.*

Michael frowned.

He turned the photograph over again.

Then he noticed another document tucked inside the envelope.

A copy of a marriage certificate.

But the name of the groom wasn't his father.

It was Robert Hensley.

The dead notary.

Michael stared at it.

"Why would my father have this?""

Jonathan took the document.

His expression became grave.

"Michael, I need you to look at the date.""

Michael did.

The marriage certificate was dated six months before Vanessa married his father.

Evelyn examined it.

"That doesn't necessarily prove anything about the trust. But it raises questions about her identity and financial history.""

Michael looked toward Vanessa.

She was standing in the doorway.

Her face had lost all color.

"You said Robert was just your father's accountant," Michael said.

Vanessa didn't answer.

"Why did you marry him?""

Vanessa's eyes moved to the marriage certificate.

Then she looked at Brandon.

The boy was trembling.

"Mom," he whispered.

"You said Dad was my dad.""

Michael looked at Brandon.

"What?""

Brandon's eyes filled with tears.

Vanessa stepped toward him.

"Don't listen to him.""

But the boy backed away.

"You told me Grandpa was my real dad.""

The room went silent.

Michael felt as if the floor had disappeared beneath him.

Jonathan slowly lowered the papers.

Evelyn looked at Vanessa.

And Lily, standing beside Michael, whispered the question nobody else dared to ask.

"Does that mean Brandon isn't really Daddy's brother?""

Vanessa opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, Brandon began to cry.

And then he said something that changed the entire meaning of the documents scattered across the floor.

"Mom told me Lily had to sign everything because Grandpa promised the money would belong to me.""

Michael looked at the marriage certificate again.

His father's name.

Robert's name.

The dates.

Sarah's warning.

Suddenly, he understood that the stolen inheritance might only be one part of Vanessa's plan.

He turned toward Jonathan.

"Find out who Brandon's biological father is.""

Jonathan nodded slowly.

But before he could respond, Michael's phone rang.

The caller ID showed a name he hadn't seen in almost a year.

*Margaret Carter.*

His father's older sister.

The woman who had refused to attend Vanessa's wedding.

Michael answered.

"Margaret?""

Her voice was trembling.

"Michael, listen carefully. I heard Vanessa has been asking questions about the Carter family trust.""

"How do you know?""

"Because she called me this afternoon.""

"Why?""

Margaret took a shaky breath.

"She wanted to know whether your father had ever told you about the child he had before you were born.""

Michael's blood ran cold.

"What child?""

Margaret began to cry.

"Michael, Vanessa isn't the only person who has been hiding the truth.""

May you like

Then she whispered:

"Your father had another son. And according to the documents I found, that son may have a legal claim to the very inheritance Vanessa is trying to steal from Lily.""
