Chapter 9: The Final Account

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The hospital room was filled with the sound of machines, the quiet rhythm of my baby's heartbeat, and the impossible weight of a truth that seemed too large to hold.

"My father?""

Julian's voice barely existed.

Diana looked at the confession again.

"Your father-in-law's handwriting matches the records we have.""

Julian shook his head.

"No.""

Richard looked down.

"I'm sorry.""

"No.""

Julian stood abruptly.

"My father spent his entire life telling me honesty mattered.""

The pain in his voice was different from anything I had heard before.

It wasn't fear.

It wasn't guilt.

It was grief.

The kind of grief that came when someone you loved became someone you never knew.

I watched him struggle to understand how a person could build a family and destroy it at the same time.

"Julian," I said softly.

He looked at me.

For once, I didn't see the man who left me behind at a wedding.

I saw a son mourning the father he thought he had.

Diana placed the confession on the table.

"We need to verify everything.""

Richard nodded.

"There will be more.""

I looked at him.

"More?""

He hesitated.

Then reached into his briefcase.

"There was one thing your father-in-law hid better than the money.""

Another document appeared.

An old photograph.

A group of people standing outside Sterling Ridge Estate twenty years earlier.

I recognized Eleanor.

Julian's father.

A younger Seraphina.

And another person.

Someone who made my breath stop.

My own father.

I stared.

"No.""

Julian looked at me.

"You know him?""

I couldn't answer.

Because I did.

Not from memory.

From a photograph I had seen thousands of times.

My father's old office photo.

The one my mother kept after he died.

"What is he doing there?""

Nobody answered.

Because everyone already knew.

My father wasn't an outsider.

He was part of the beginning.

Diana studied my expression.

"Audrey.""

I looked at her.

"I swear I didn't know.""

"I believe you.""

But that didn't make the shock disappear.

My entire life had been built on a story.

My father was a hardworking accountant.

A man who spent long hours helping small businesses.

A man who taught me numbers were honest.

But what if he wasn't?

What if the thing I loved most about him had been a lie?

That night, I couldn't sleep.

Julian sat in the chair beside my bed.

Neither of us spoke for a long time.

Finally, he said:

"I should have told you.""

I looked at him.

"Told me what?""

"Everything.""

The honesty surprised me.

"My family.""

He swallowed.

"The things I suspected.""

I looked away.

"Why didn't you?""

"Because I thought I could fix it.""

A bitter smile crossed my face.

"Everyone thinks they can fix things alone.""

He nodded.

"I was afraid.""

"Of what?""

"Of losing you.""

The answer hurt.

Because he had done exactly that.

"You lost me anyway.""

His eyes closed.

"I know.""

Silence.

Then he said something I never expected.

"I'm going to testify.""

I turned.

"What?""

"Against my family.""

"Julian.""

"I know what it means.""

His voice was steady.

"If I stay silent, I'm no better than them.""

For the first time in a long time, I saw the man I fell in love with.

Not the man his family created.

The man underneath.

The next morning, everything changed.

The investigation moved quickly.

Evidence was collected.

Accounts were frozen.

Names were revealed.

But one person was missing.

Vanessa.

She had disappeared.

Until she called me.

Not Diana.

Not the investigators.

Me.

I answered.

"Where are you?""

Her voice was calm.

"Still trying to save people who don't deserve saving?""

I frowned.

"What do you want?""

"The truth.""

"You destroyed lives.""

"No.""

Her voice sharpened.

"I exposed what they built.""

"You manipulated the investigation.""

"I had no choice.""

"There is always a choice.""

A pause.

Then she said:

"You sound like your father.""

My heart stopped.

"What does that mean?""

"He said the same thing.""

The room became cold.

"Vanessa.""

"He wasn't the monster you think he was.""

I sat up.

"What?""

"Your father built the system.""

She continued.

"But he tried to destroy it later.""

I gripped the phone.

"Why?""

"Because he realized what it became.""

My voice shook.

"Then why did he leave us?""

Silence.

A long one.

Then:

"Because he was killed.""

Everything stopped.

"What?""

Vanessa continued quietly.

"The official story says your father died in an accident.""

My hands tightened.

"But?""

"But it wasn't an accident.""

A thousand questions exploded in my mind.

"Who killed him?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

Instead, she said:

"You need to look at the final page of the ledger.""

"The ledger is with the investigators.""

"No.""

Her voice became urgent.

"It isn't.""

I froze.

"What are you talking about?""

"Audrey.""

A pause.

"The ledger you found was a copy.""

My blood ran cold.

"What?""

"The original has always been somewhere else.""

"Where?""

Her answer was almost a whisper.

"With you.""

I looked around the hospital room.

Impossible.

I didn't have it.

I hadn't touched it.

Then I remembered.

The black briefcase.

The one I had carried to the wedding.

The one I had never opened after everything happened.

Because I thought it contained only evidence.

I felt my heartbeat increase.

"Why tell me this?""

Vanessa was quiet.

Then:

"Because Eleanor knows.""

The line went silent.

I pulled the phone away.

"Vanessa?""

Nothing.

The call had ended.

A second later, the hospital alarm sounded.

The door opened.

A nurse rushed in.

"Mrs. Sterling, we need you to come with us.""

"What happened?""

Her face was pale.

"We found someone inside your room.""

My stomach dropped.

"Who?""

May you like

The nurse looked toward the hallway.

"Eleanor Sterling.""
