Chapter 3: The Signature

The next morning, Sterling Ridge Estate looked exactly the same.

That was the cruelest part.

The flowers were still arranged.

The chairs were still lined up.

The champagne glasses were still waiting on tables where people had celebrated while I was trapped in a bathroom.

But the illusion was gone.

Diana sat beside my hospital bed reviewing documents.

"Your husband is claiming he was unaware of the fraud.""

I looked at the ceiling.

"Do you believe him?""

Diana didn't answer immediately.

That told me enough.

"Neither do you.""

She closed the folder.

"The signatures are complicated.""

"Meaning?""

"Meaning someone wanted it to look like Julian approved everything.""

I turned toward her.

"But he did sign.""

"Yes.""

"Then why are we talking about appearances?""

"Because signatures can be forged.""

I froze.

"What?""

Diana opened a file.

"Your husband signed documents. But some of the approval timestamps happened while he was out of the country.""

I stared.

"You're saying someone used him?""

"Possibly.""

For the first time since the wedding, I felt something other than anger.

Confusion.

Because the man who abandoned me might also have been trapped.

Or maybe that was just another story I wanted to believe.

A nurse entered.

"Mrs. Sterling?""

"Yes?""

"You have a visitor.""

I expected Julian.

Instead, Eleanor walked in.

She carried a bouquet.

I almost laughed.

Flowers.

After everything.

"Audrey.""

I looked at the bouquet.

"Are those supposed to make me forget the lock?""

Her lips tightened.

"I came to apologize.""

Diana stood.

"I'll give you privacy.""

I grabbed her hand before she left.

"Don't go far.""

She nodded.

Eleanor waited until the door closed.

Then her expression changed.

The softness disappeared.

"I hope you understand the position you have put this family in.""

I stared at her.

"Me?""

"You caused a public scene.""

"My water broke.""

"You could have handled it privately.""

I almost couldn't believe her.

"I was locked in a bathroom.""

"You were emotional.""

"No.""

I looked directly at her.

"I was betrayed.""

Her eyes narrowed.

"You think you are better than us now.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"Because of your investigation.""

There it was.

The real reason.

Not the wedding.

Not embarrassment.

Fear.

"You knew.""

She said nothing.

"You knew I was investigating.""

Her silence confirmed it.

"Eleanor.""

She stepped closer.

"Your mistake was believing you were part of this family.""

The words were colder than anything she had said before.

"I loved your son.""

"You were useful to my son.""

My stomach twisted.

"Excuse me?""

"You organized his life. Managed his schedule. Made him look respectable.""

She smiled faintly.

"But you were never a Sterling.""

The door opened.

Julian stood there.

"Eleanor.""

She turned.

For the first time, she looked surprised.

"How long have you been listening?""

"Long enough.""

His face was unreadable.

His mother looked at him.

"Julian, don't let her manipulate you.""

He shook his head.

"No.""

One word.

But it sounded different.

Stronger.

Eleanor stepped toward him.

"Remember who protected you.""

Julian looked at her.

Then at me.

"I remember who protected me.""

A silence filled the room.

Eleanor left without another word.

When the door closed, Julian stayed standing.

"I didn't know.""

I looked at him.

"Didn't know what?""

"That my mother was using my signatures.""

I said nothing.

"I thought the businesses were legitimate.""

"You thought?""

His shoulders dropped.

"I was wrong.""

I wanted to hate him.

It would have been easier.

But then I remembered him standing outside that bathroom door.

The choice he made.

"You still left me.""

His eyes closed.

"I know.""

"No explanation fixes that.""

"I know.""

The honesty surprised me.

Then he reached into his pocket.

"I found something.""

He placed a small envelope on the table.

I opened it.

Inside was a copy of a bank transfer.

My eyes scanned the page.

Then stopped.

The account receiving the money wasn't Eleanor's.

It wasn't Seraphina's.

It wasn't even connected to Sterling Ridge Estate.

It was connected to someone I never expected.

Someone who had been helping me investigate.

Someone I trusted.

My hands went cold.

"Julian.""

"What?""

I looked up.

"The person behind this...""

May you like

My voice shook.

"It's not your mother.""
