Chapter 6: The Hidden Ledger

The next hour passed like a nightmare.

Doctors surrounded me.

Machines beeped.

Voices shouted instructions.

And all I could think about was the person standing outside the room who had spent months pretending to help me.

When the doctor finally stepped back, I could breathe again.

"The baby's stable.""

I closed my eyes.

A tear slipped down my cheek.

Not from fear.

From exhaustion.

Julian sat beside me.

He still held my hand.

But something between us remained broken.

A hand could hold someone.

And still fail them.

After the doctors left, Diana returned.

Vanessa was gone.

"Where did she go?""

Diana's jaw tightened.

"Security lost track of her.""

"How?""

"Because she had clearance.""

Of course she did.

The system trusted her.

Everyone trusted her.

Including me.

Diana placed a new file on the table.

"We need to talk about the second ledger.""

I looked at her.

"I don't have it.""

"You don't?""

"No.""

She studied my face.

Then nodded.

"Then someone wants us to think you do.""

Julian looked confused.

"Why?""

Diana opened the file.

"Because the second ledger is not just financial information.""

"What is it?""

"Names.""

The room became quiet.

"Names of everyone involved.""

I looked at Julian.

"Your family.""

He nodded slowly.

"Who else?""

Diana hesitated.

That scared me.

"Who else?""

She looked at the documents.

"People inside law enforcement.""

My chest tightened.

That explained everything.

The delays.

The warnings.

The investigation being redirected.

Vanessa wasn't just protecting the Sterlings.

She was protecting herself.

A nurse interrupted.

"Mrs. Sterling, you have another visitor.""

I immediately shook my head.

"No.""

The nurse looked uncomfortable.

"He says he is your attorney.""

"I don't have an attorney.""

The door opened.

A man in his sixties entered.

Gray hair.

Expensive suit.

Familiar face.

Julian stood.

"Richard.""

The man looked at him.

"Julian.""

I looked between them.

"Who is he?""

Julian swallowed.

"My father's old attorney.""

The man placed a briefcase down.

"Audrey, I need you to listen carefully.""

Diana stepped forward.

"No.""

He ignored her.

"Your life is in danger.""

I stared.

"Because of Vanessa?""

His expression changed.

So did Julian's.

"You know about her?""

The attorney looked at me.

"I know more than I wish I did.""

He opened the briefcase.

Inside was a small black book.

My breath stopped.

The ledger.

"The second ledger.""

Diana immediately reached for it.

But the attorney pulled it back.

"Not yet.""

"Why?""

"Because if this book enters official custody, half the people protecting the Sterlings will know.""

Diana's eyes narrowed.

"You're asking us to trust you.""

"No.""

He looked at me.

"I'm asking Audrey to remember something.""

"What?""

"Her greatest strength.""

I frowned.

"What are you talking about?""

He smiled sadly.

"You never trusted power.""

The words felt strange.

Because they were true.

I had spent my life believing systems mattered.

Rules mattered.

Numbers mattered.

But I had forgotten one thing.

People could corrupt anything.

Even justice.

The attorney opened the ledger.

"There is something you need to see.""

He turned to a page.

My eyes moved over the handwriting.

Then froze.

A signature.

Not Julian's.

Not Eleanor's.

Not Seraphina's.

Vanessa's.

But underneath her name was another.

A name I recognized immediately.

A name that made my blood run cold.

The attorney closed the book.

"Audrey.""

I looked up.

"Your investigation was never about finding the person behind the fraud.""

I stared at him.

"What do you mean?""

His voice dropped.

"You were brought into the case because someone needed you to find it.""

"Who?""

He looked toward the door.

Then back at me.

"The person who started this entire investigation.""

The room became silent.

I whispered:

"Who?""

The attorney answered.

May you like

And when he said the name, Julian stepped backward.

Because it was someone none of us expected.
