Chapter 5: The Woman Behind the Smile

I had spent nine months believing the most dangerous people in my life were the ones who openly hated me.

I was wrong.

The most dangerous people were the ones who smiled while they held the knife.

Dr. Vanessa Reed stood at the entrance of my hospital room wearing a cream-colored suit, her dark hair perfectly styled, her expression calm and professional.

The same expression she had worn every time she reviewed my investigation reports.

The same expression she had worn when she told me:

"Audrey, you can trust me.""

My stomach tightened.

Not from the baby.

From betrayal.

"Vanessa.""

Her smile widened slightly.

"I see you've put the pieces together.""

Diana stepped between us.

"Dr. Reed, you need to leave.""

Vanessa looked at her.

"Special Agent Cruz. Still protecting Audrey?""

"Actually," Diana replied, "I'm protecting the investigation.""

Vanessa tilted her head.

"Interesting choice of words.""

Julian stood beside the bed.

I noticed something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not the fear from the wedding.

Not the fear of being caught.

A deeper fear.

The fear of realizing he had trusted the wrong person too.

"How long?"" I asked.

Vanessa looked at me.

"How long what?""

"How long have you been manipulating everything?""

The room went silent.

For a moment, she looked almost offended.

Then she sighed.

"That's a dramatic way to describe cooperation.""

"Cooperation?""

I pointed at the tablet.

"The hidden accounts. The fake companies. The forged approvals.""

Her eyes moved toward Julian.

"Your husband already knows he was used.""

Julian's voice was cold.

"Did you forge my signatures?""

Vanessa didn't answer immediately.

That was her answer.

"You don't understand how this works, Julian.""

His face hardened.

"No. Explain it.""

She walked closer.

"Your family built a machine. Your mother controlled the money. Your sister controlled appearances. You controlled legitimacy.""

"I didn't know.""

"No.""

Vanessa smiled sadly.

"That was always your weakness.""

Julian looked like he had been slapped.

I watched him absorb the truth.

The woman who had guided the investigation had not been trying to expose the Sterling family.

She had been managing it.

"You were the leak," I whispered.

Vanessa looked at me.

"Not exactly.""

"Then what?""

She leaned against the wall.

"I was the person making sure nobody went too far.""

Diana's expression changed.

"You're admitting obstruction of a federal investigation.""

Vanessa shrugged.

"Words matter.""

"No," I said.

I looked at her.

"Actions matter.""

For the first time, her smile disappeared.

"You always did have a problem with emotions.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"You think numbers tell the whole story.""

She walked toward the window.

"You see a transaction. A signature. A missing invoice.""

She turned.

"But you never ask why people do what they do.""

I almost laughed.

"You're lecturing me about understanding people?""

"I understood you.""

Her voice became quieter.

"That's why you were useful.""

The words hit harder than I expected.

Useful.

The same word Eleanor had used.

The same word the Sterling family had used.

I was never a person to them.

I was a tool.

"Why me?""

Vanessa looked at me.

"Because you were perfect.""

I felt a chill.

"You married Julian. You entered the family. You had access. You were honest.""

She smiled.

"Honest people are the easiest to control.""

Diana stepped forward.

"Enough.""

Vanessa ignored her.

"You know what your biggest mistake was, Audrey?""

I stared.

"You thought the truth automatically wins.""

She looked at the hospital monitors.

"The truth only wins when someone powerful allows it.""

Julian clenched his fists.

"You threatened my wife.""

Vanessa turned toward him.

"No.""

She smiled.

"I protected your family from her.""

My eyes narrowed.

"What does that mean?""

She reached into her bag.

My entire body went cold.

Diana immediately moved.

"Don't.""

Vanessa slowly pulled out a folder.

Not a weapon.

Documents.

"I brought you something.""

She placed it on the table.

Julian looked at it.

"What is that?""

Vanessa smiled.

"The reason Audrey should have looked deeper before trusting her own investigation.""

I opened the folder.

The first page was a birth certificate.

Not mine.

Not Julian's.

Someone else's.

My eyes moved across the name.

Then stopped.

I felt the room disappear.

Because the document showed a connection I never knew existed.

A connection between Vanessa Reed...

And the Sterling family.

"That's impossible.""

Vanessa watched my face.

"No.""

Her voice was almost gentle.

"That's the only thing that has ever been true.""

Before I could ask another question, the monitor beside me suddenly changed.

A nurse rushed in.

"Mrs. Sterling, we need you to stay calm.""

My heart raced.

"What happened?""

The nurse looked at the screen.

"The baby's heart rate dropped.""

Everyone moved at once.

Doctors entered.

Diana stepped back.

Julian grabbed my hand.

And Vanessa?

May you like

Vanessa simply watched.

As if she already knew exactly what would happen next.
