Chapter 1: The Woman He Wanted Gone
“Dad, I swear I saw her doing it. She thought nobody was watching.””
Those were the words that turned Daniel Hayes’s peaceful home into a battlefield—and nearly destroyed the woman who had spent seven years loving his son as her own.
At seventeen, Ethan Hayes knew exactly how to make his father believe him. He knew which words would trigger Daniel’s anger, which tears would make him look vulnerable, and which accusations would make his stepmother appear dangerous.
But Ethan had made one mistake.
He had forgotten about the security cameras.
And when the footage was finally reviewed, the truth would be far worse than anyone expected.
Three weeks earlier, everything had seemed normal.
Daniel stood in the kitchen of his spacious suburban home outside Columbus, Ohio, pouring coffee into a travel mug while his wife, Laura, packed lunches for the day.
Laura was forty-two, with shoulder-length brown hair, a warm smile, and a quiet patience that had earned her a reputation among neighbors as the kindest woman on the block.
She had married Daniel when Ethan was ten.
His biological mother, Melissa, had moved to another state after the divorce, leaving Daniel with primary custody. Laura had never tried to replace her. She had simply tried to be someone Ethan could count on.
She attended his school meetings, remembered his favorite meals, helped him study for exams, and sat beside him during the nights when nightmares made him afraid to sleep alone.
For years, she believed they had built something resembling a family.
Recently, however, Ethan had changed.
He stayed in his bedroom for hours, avoided family dinners, and became unusually defensive whenever Laura asked about school.
Daniel noticed the distance but assumed it was teenage behavior.
Laura wasn't so sure.
That morning, she placed a plate of pancakes on the counter.
“Ethan, breakfast is ready.””
No answer.
She walked toward the staircase.
“Ethan? Your bus comes in twenty minutes.””
His bedroom door opened.
Ethan appeared wearing a black hoodie, his phone in one hand.
“I heard you the first time.””
“Okay. I just wanted to make sure you weren't running late.””
“Can you stop acting like you're my mother?””
Laura paused.
Daniel looked up from his coffee.
“Ethan,” he said firmly, “watch your tone.””
“What? I'm just saying.””
Laura forced a small smile.
“It's fine, Daniel. He's getting older.””
Ethan grabbed a pancake, took one bite, and walked away.
The kitchen fell silent.
Daniel sighed.
“I'm sorry.””
“Don't apologize for him,” Laura replied.
“He's going through something.””
Daniel reached for her hand.
“You've been more patient with him than most people would be.””
Laura squeezed his fingers.
“I love you. That means I care about the people you love.””
Neither noticed Ethan standing at the top of the stairs.
He had heard every word.
And something about Laura's answer made his expression harden.
That afternoon, Daniel received a call from his attorney.
His late father had left him a substantial inheritance, including an investment account and a commercial property. Daniel had recently decided to establish a trust to protect the family assets.
The conversation had started as a routine discussion.
Until the attorney mentioned Laura.
“Daniel, I want to confirm something. You said Laura would receive certain benefits under the new arrangement?””
“Yes. She's my wife. I want her protected if something happens to me.””
“And Ethan?””
“My son remains the primary beneficiary of the inheritance.””
“Good. I'll prepare the documents.””
Daniel ended the call without giving the conversation another thought.
Unfortunately, Ethan had been listening from the hallway.
He had come downstairs to get a charger when he heard his father's voice through the half-open office door.
He caught only fragments.
“Laura will be protected…”
“Trust documents…”
“Beneficiary…”
To Ethan, those words meant one thing.
Laura was getting something that belonged to him.
That evening, Ethan sat in his bedroom with his laptop open.
A message from his mother appeared.
*Melissa:* How are things going over there?
Ethan stared at the screen before typing.
*Ethan:* Dad is making Laura part of everything.
*Melissa:* What does that mean?
*Ethan:* He's putting her in the trust. She'll probably get half of everything eventually.
There was a pause.
*Melissa:* I told you this would happen when he married her.
Ethan leaned back.
*Ethan:* I don't want her here anymore.
*Melissa:* Then you need to make your father understand what kind of woman she really is.
Ethan read the message twice.
“What kind of woman she really is,” he whispered.
An idea began forming.
It wasn't fully developed yet.
But it had a direction.
Over the next few days, Ethan started paying attention to things he had previously ignored.
He noticed the small security cameras Daniel had installed after a neighborhood burglary. One covered the front entrance. Another monitored the driveway. Two more were positioned in the downstairs hallway and the living room.
There was also a camera near the entrance to Daniel's home office.
Ethan knew the cameras existed.
He also knew his father rarely checked the recordings unless something happened.
One evening, while Daniel was working late, Ethan walked into the kitchen and found Laura organizing grocery receipts.
“Can I ask you something?”” he said.
Laura looked up.
“Of course.””
“Are you going to inherit Dad's money?””
Her hands stopped moving.
“Why would you ask me that?””
“I heard him talking about the trust.””
Laura placed the receipts down.
“Your father is making arrangements to protect the family. That's all.””
“Which family?””
“Ours, Ethan.””
He laughed without humor.
“You really think you're part of my family?””
Laura's expression changed, but she kept her voice calm.
“I know I haven't always made things easy for you. But I have never wanted to take anything away from you.””
“That's exactly what you're doing.””
“Ethan, your father loves you. Nothing about that is changing.””
He stepped closer.
“Then why does he need to put your name on everything?””
“That's something you should discuss with him.””
Ethan shook his head.
“You always do that. You act innocent and make everyone think I'm the problem.””
Laura stood.
“I don't want to argue with you.””
“Of course you don't.””
He walked away, leaving her alone in the kitchen.
Later that night, Laura told Daniel what had happened.
Daniel listened with a troubled expression.
“I'll talk to him.””
“Please don't make it worse.””
“He can't keep speaking to you like that.””
“I'm not asking him to love me,” Laura said quietly.
“I just want him to stop seeing me as his enemy.””
Daniel wrapped his arms around her.
“He'll understand eventually.””
But upstairs, Ethan was already preparing to make sure that never happened.
The next afternoon, he entered his father's office while Daniel was away.
He opened a drawer, searched through several folders, and found an old phone Daniel had kept as a backup device.
Then he took a small envelope from his backpack.
Inside were several printed photographs.
They were ordinary photographs of Laura, taken at different times around the house.
But Ethan had selected them carefully.
One showed her speaking with a male delivery driver near the front entrance. Another showed her standing in the hallway while a repairman carried a toolbox.
Nothing inappropriate had happened in either situation.
Still, Ethan had written misleading captions beneath the photographs.
He also created several fake messages on his laptop, using an account with a name that resembled Laura's.
The messages suggested that Laura had been secretly meeting another man and had been engaging in sexually suggestive conversations while Daniel was away.
The content was deliberately ambiguous.
He wanted his father to imagine the worst.
He printed the messages, folded them, and placed them inside the backup phone's case.
Then he slipped the phone into a drawer in Laura's personal desk.
He stepped back and examined his work.
It wasn't enough to make someone suspicious.
It was designed to make someone feel betrayed.
Before leaving, Ethan took out his own phone and photographed the drawer with the planted evidence inside.
He would need that picture later.
That evening, Daniel arrived home carrying a bag of groceries.
Laura was in the living room, folding laundry.
“Hey,” Daniel said, kissing her forehead.
“How was your day?””
“Quiet. Ethan barely spoke to me.””
Daniel placed the groceries on the table.
“I'll have a conversation with him tonight.””
Laura shook her head.
“Not tonight. He's been stressed.””
Daniel smiled.
“You always defend him.””
“Someone has to.””
They both laughed.
For a moment, the house felt normal again.
Then Ethan appeared at the bottom of the stairs.
“Dad?””
Daniel turned.
“What is it?””
“I need to show you something.””
His eyes moved briefly toward Laura.
Then he lowered his voice.
“Something about her.””
Laura stopped folding the shirt in her hands.
Daniel's smile disappeared.
“What are you talking about?””
Ethan swallowed.
May you like
“I found something in her desk.””
And when he pulled the folded photographs from his hoodie pocket, Laura had no idea that the worst night of her life was about to begin.
