Chapter 8: The Recording Mark Never Expected
The next morning, Daniel received an unexpected visit.
Mark arrived at 9:15 a.m., wearing a navy suit and carrying a leather briefcase.
He walked through the front door as though nothing had happened.
“Morning,” he called.
Daniel stood in the living room.
“You shouldn't be here.””
Mark stopped.
“Come on. We're brothers.””
“Not right now.””
Mark glanced toward the dining room.
Laura was sitting with Susan, who had arrived early to discuss the next steps.
Mark smiled.
“Ah. Legal representation. Things have gotten serious.””
Susan closed her folder.
“Mr. Hayes, I recommend that you leave until the relevant matters have been reviewed.””
Mark laughed.
“I'm here to talk to my brother, not you.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You entered my house without permission. You took confidential documents. You interfered with my security system. And there's evidence connecting you to fabricated allegations against my wife.””
Mark's expression barely changed.
“That's quite a story.””
“Is it?””
“Ethan told you all that?””
Daniel didn't answer.
Mark shook his head.
“That boy is easily influenced.””
Daniel stared at him.
“You gave him the photographs.””
“I gave him information.””
“You told him to create false messages.””
“I told him to pay attention.””
“You put something in Laura's desk.””
Mark shrugged.
“Maybe you should ask Laura what she keeps in there.””
Laura stood.
“Don't you dare.””
Mark looked at her.
“I'm sorry. Have we met?””
Laura's face hardened.
“You've eaten at my table. You've celebrated holidays in my home. You've called me family.””
“That's your interpretation.””
Daniel stepped between them.
“Leave.””
Mark placed his briefcase on the coffee table.
“Before I do, perhaps you should look at something.””
He opened it and removed a folder.
Inside were several bank statements.
He spread them across the table.
“Your wife has been spending money from the household account.””
Daniel glanced at the documents.
“These are routine expenses.””
Mark pointed to one transaction.
“Three thousand dollars. Another twenty-five hundred. Then another transfer.””
Laura stepped closer.
“Those were payments for the house renovation.””
Mark smiled.
“Is that what she told you?””
Daniel looked at the statements.
He recognized every transaction.
They had all been approved by him.
“You know these are legitimate,” Daniel said.
Mark shrugged.
“Then why are you defending her?””
Susan stood.
“Mr. Hayes, these documents appear to be incomplete. We have the corresponding invoices and approvals.””
Mark turned toward her.
“Of course you do.””
He closed the folder.
“You know what your problem is, Daniel? You always think you're smarter than everyone else.””
Daniel stared at him.
“What did you do with the $185,000?””
For the first time, Mark's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“What money?””
“The transfer from Hayes Commercial Properties.””
Mark laughed.
“You're accusing me of stealing from our own company?””
“The receiving company is connected to you.””
“Prove it.””
Susan stepped forward.
“The transaction records are being reviewed. We have no intention of discussing unverified financial evidence with you in this room.””
Mark looked at Daniel.
“She's got you completely under control.””
Daniel's voice was steady.
“Get out of my house.””
Mark picked up his briefcase.
Then he leaned toward Daniel.
“There's one thing you should remember. Ethan came to me because he didn't trust Laura. I didn't force him to do anything.””
Daniel stared at him.
“You manipulated a seventeen-year-old boy.””
“I gave him an opportunity to protect himself.””
“From what?””
Mark smiled.
“From being replaced.””
He walked toward the door.
Before leaving, he turned back.
“By the way, you should check the camera footage from the night Laura was alone in the house. The one from the living room.””
Daniel frowned.
“Why?””
Mark shrugged.
“Maybe you'll finally see what you've been defending.””
He left.
Daniel stood motionless.
Laura looked at Susan.
“What was that supposed to mean?””
Susan shook her head.
“I don't know. But don't let him provoke you into making assumptions.””
Daniel immediately called Robert.
“Mark just mentioned another recording. The living room camera, on a night Laura was alone.””
Robert was quiet.
“Do you know which date?””
Daniel searched his memory.
“Approximately two weeks before the first accusation.””
“I'll review it.””
An hour later, Robert called back.
“Daniel, I found something.””
Daniel straightened.
“What?””
“The recording Mark mentioned. But it doesn't show what he probably wanted you to think.””
“What does it show?””
“Laura entering the living room at 8:42 p.m. She's carrying a folder. She sits on the sofa, opens it, and makes a phone call.””
Daniel waited.
“Then what?””
“She speaks for about twelve minutes. Afterward, she puts the folder away and leaves.””
“Who does she call?””
“I'm checking the associated phone records, but the audio isn't clear enough to identify the other person's voice.””
Daniel frowned.
“Can you send me the recording?””
“I can send you the preserved copy.””
Daniel opened the file on his laptop.
The footage showed Laura sitting alone on the sofa.
She appeared worried.
She opened a folder and removed several pages.
Then she made a call.
Daniel watched her expression change.
At one point, she covered her eyes.
Another moment showed her wiping her cheeks.
The call ended.
She remained seated for several minutes before putting everything away.
Daniel looked toward Laura.
“What was this about?””
Laura watched the recording.
Then she looked at him.
“I was trying to find a way to tell you something.””
“What?””
She hesitated.
“Your father.””
Daniel frowned.
“My father died years ago.””
“I know.””
Laura took a deep breath.
“Before he passed away, he contacted me privately.””
Daniel stared at her.
“What are you talking about?””
“He asked me to help him with something.””
Daniel sat down.
“What something?””
Laura looked toward Susan.
Susan remained silent, allowing Laura to explain.
“Your father was worried about Mark. He believed Mark was taking money from the business.””
Daniel's face changed.
“Did he tell you that?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“About six months before he died.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because your father asked me to wait until he had spoken to you himself. He wanted to give Mark a chance to correct things.””
Daniel leaned back.
“What did he give you?””
Laura opened a drawer and removed a small envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Daniel recognized his father's handwriting immediately.
He began reading.
Daniel, if you're reading this, then I may not have had the chance to explain what I discovered about Mark.
I have watched your brother make decisions that concern me. I believe he has been moving money through accounts I don't recognize. I don't want you to destroy your relationship with him based on suspicion, but I also don't want you to ignore what I've seen.
I asked Laura to hold these records because I trusted her judgment. She has no financial interest in our business. She is the one person I believe will tell you the truth, even when it is uncomfortable.
Daniel stopped reading.
He looked at Laura.
“Your father trusted you with this?””
She nodded.
“He gave me copies of some old financial statements and asked me to keep them safe.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“I tried.””
Daniel looked at the security recording again.
“You were going to tell me that night.””
“Yes. But Mark called me before you came home.””
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“What did he say?””
“He told me he knew your father had given me documents. He said I should stay out of the business or he would make sure you never believed another word I said.””
Daniel stood.
“Why didn't you tell me that?””
Laura's eyes filled.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of Mark?””
“Yes.””
Daniel stared at her.
She continued.
“He told me he had friends who could make things difficult. He said if I caused trouble, he would make you think I was stealing from you.””
Daniel looked down at the letter.
Suddenly, the fabricated accusations made a terrible kind of sense.
Mark had known Laura possessed information about the missing money.
He had needed to discredit her before she could reveal it.
The affair allegations weren't simply an attempt to end a marriage.
They were an attempt to destroy the credibility of the one person who could expose him.
Daniel sat beside Laura.
“I'm sorry.””
She wiped her eyes.
“I didn't know how to protect you without making everything worse.””
He took her hand.
“You should never have had to protect me from my own family.””
Susan picked up the letter.
“This changes the financial investigation considerably. We need to compare the documents your father preserved with the current company records.””
Daniel nodded.
“Do it.””
Later that afternoon, Robert arrived with a second batch of recovered files.
He had managed to restore part of the missing hallway recording.
The video was grainy, but the image was clear enough to identify Mark entering the house with a black bag.
This time, Robert slowed the recording.
“Watch his left hand.””
Mark approached Laura's desk.
He opened the drawer.
Then he removed a small transparent packet.
Inside appeared to be a folded piece of clothing.
Laura leaned forward.
“What is that?””
Robert enhanced the image.
The packet contained a black lace garment.
Daniel stared.
Mark placed it inside the drawer, then took out his phone and photographed it.
Afterward, he removed it and placed it back inside his bag.
The footage continued.
Mark opened another folder and removed a printed sheet.
He laid it beside the packet.
Then he took several photographs.
Daniel's stomach turned.
“What was he doing?””
Robert paused the recording.
“Based on the sequence, he appears to have been creating staged photographs of objects in Laura's personal space.””
Laura looked horrified.
“That garment isn't mine.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“Are you sure?””
“I've never seen it before.””
Robert nodded.
“That is consistent with the footage. Mark appears to bring the item into the house.””
Daniel stared at the monitor.
“He wanted me to find it.””
“Yes.””
Laura covered her face.
“He wanted you to believe I had been hiding something.””
Daniel looked at the timestamp.
The date was the same day Ethan had claimed to discover the backup phone.
Everything had been carefully arranged.
The photographs.
The messages.
The phone.
The clothing.
The camera interruption.
And then Mark had used Ethan to deliver the accusation.
But Robert wasn't finished.
He opened another recovered file.
“This is a video recorded on the same day. It was stored in a folder that had been deleted.””
The image showed Mark sitting in his car outside the house.
He was speaking to someone on the phone.
Robert increased the volume.
Mark's voice became audible.
“It's done. The boy has the documents, and the wife will be blamed.””
A woman's voice replied.
“Are you sure Daniel will believe it?””
Mark smiled.
“He always wants to believe the worst when he's afraid of losing control.””
The woman laughed.
Then Mark said something that made Daniel go completely still.
“Once he signs the papers, we'll have access to everything.””
The woman's voice became clearer.
“Don't forget what we agreed.””
Mark answered:
“I haven't forgotten. Your share is already arranged.””
Robert paused the recording.
Daniel stared at him.
“Who is that woman?””
Robert replayed the last few seconds.
This time, the voice was unmistakable.
Daniel recognized it immediately.
It was Melissa.
But the most disturbing part wasn't that his ex-wife and brother were working together.
It was the mention of a share.
A share of what?
And why would Melissa receive money from Mark?
Before Daniel could ask, Susan's phone rang.
She listened for several seconds.
Then her expression changed.
She ended the call and looked directly at Daniel.
“The bank has confirmed another suspicious transaction.””
“How much?””
“Four hundred and twenty thousand dollars.””
Daniel felt his knees weaken.
“From where?””
Susan closed her notebook.
“Your father's old investment account.””
Daniel stared at her.
“That account was supposed to be protected by the trust.””
Susan nodded.
“And according to the transaction records, the transfer was authorized using a document bearing your signature.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I never signed anything.””
May you like
Susan looked toward the monitor, where Mark's face was frozen on the screen.
“Then we have a much bigger problem.””
