Chapter 4: The Message That Changed Everything

Daniel remained motionless, holding his phone against his ear.

Across the dining room, Ethan stared at him with wide eyes. Laura stood near the table, one hand gripping the back of a chair.

Robert's words kept repeating in Daniel's mind.

Good. But don't let him check the cameras.

“Robert,” Daniel finally said, “I need you to preserve every message, every file, and every timestamp. Don't delete or modify anything.””

“Already doing that,” Robert replied.

“I've also found evidence suggesting the screenshots were created using an account that isn't Laura's.””

“Can you prove who created them?””

“I can establish which device and account were involved. I still need to verify the account ownership and authenticate the communications.””

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“Thank you. I'll call you back.””

He ended the call.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Ethan shook his head.

“Dad, whatever Robert told you, he's wrong.””

Daniel placed his phone on the table.

“Your mother told you not to let me check the cameras.””

Ethan's mouth opened, then closed.

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

“Robert recovered the messages.””

“Maybe someone sent them pretending to be Mom.””

“Then why did you tell me to call her?””

“Because she knows Laura better than anyone!””

Laura took a step forward.

“Ethan, please stop.””

He turned toward her.

“You're enjoying this, aren't you?””

“No,” Laura answered quietly.

“I'm trying to understand why you would do this to me.””

“You've been trying to take my family away since the day you married Dad.””

Daniel's voice became sharp.

“That's enough.””

Ethan looked at him.

“You don't understand what she's doing.””

“Then explain it.””

“She wants your money. She wants the house. She wants everything Grandpa left you.””

Daniel stared at his son.

“Your grandfather left me those assets. I decide how they're managed.””

“And you put her name on the trust!””

“Yes, I did. Because she's my wife.””

Ethan slammed his hand against the counter.

“So I'm supposed to share everything with her?””

Laura flinched.

Daniel didn't.

“Your inheritance was never in danger. You knew that.””

“I heard you talking about her getting protected!””

“Because if I died tomorrow, I wouldn't want my wife left without support. That doesn't mean I'm taking something away from you.””

Ethan shook his head.

“You always have an excuse for her.””

Daniel took a slow breath.

“Did you put those photographs in Laura's desk?””

“No.””

“Did you create the messages?””

“No.””

“Did you ask your mother for help?””

Ethan looked away.

That silence was more revealing than any answer.

Daniel pulled out a chair and sat down.

“Sit.””

“I'm not a little kid.””

“Then stop behaving like one.””

Ethan remained standing.

Laura spoke gently.

“Daniel, perhaps we should talk about this when everyone is calmer.””

Daniel looked at her.

“No. We've spent enough time pretending this is a misunderstanding.””

He turned back to Ethan.

“Tomorrow, we're going to review the complete security footage with Robert. Until then, nobody touches that phone or those documents.””

Ethan laughed nervously.

“You can't force me to sit through some stupid video.””

“I can ask you to explain your actions. You're my son, and I deserve the truth.””

Ethan grabbed his backpack.

“I'm going to my room.””

“Ethan.””

He stopped.

“If you have nothing to hide, you shouldn't be afraid of the cameras.””

Ethan walked upstairs without answering.

Laura waited until his bedroom door closed.

Then she whispered, “Daniel, what if Melissa really helped him?””

Daniel looked toward the staircase.

“I think she did.””

“Why?””

He returned to his phone and showed her the recovered message.

Laura read it twice.

Her face changed.

“Don't let him check the cameras.””

She handed the phone back.

“Then she knew what happened before you even discovered it.””

Daniel nodded.

“And she wanted to make sure I never found out.””

For the next hour, they sat together in the kitchen while Daniel reviewed the records Robert had sent.

There were dozens of messages.

Some were short.

Others were long exchanges between Ethan and Melissa.

The earliest conversation dated back almost a month.

*Melissa:* Did he mention the trust again?

*Ethan:* Yeah. Laura's name is on it.

*Melissa:* Your father needs to understand that she's not his family the way you are.

*Ethan:* He says we're all family.

*Melissa:* That's what he says when he's trying to keep everyone happy. You need to protect what's yours.

Daniel's fingers tightened around the phone.

Another message appeared.

*Ethan:* What if Dad finds out?

*Melissa:* He won't. You just need to make sure the evidence looks real.

Laura covered her mouth.

“Oh, Ethan.””

Daniel scrolled further.

The next message was worse.

*Melissa:* Don't make it look too obvious. Use normal situations. A photograph with a man, a suspicious message, something that makes him question her judgment.

*Ethan:* What if she denies everything?

*Melissa:* That's why you need more than one thing.

Daniel put the phone down.

For years, he had believed Melissa's resentment toward Laura was simply the bitterness of a failed marriage.

He had tried to maintain a civil relationship for Ethan's sake.

He had never imagined she would involve their son in something like this.

Laura reached for his hand.

“Don't make a decision about Ethan tonight.””

Daniel looked at her.

“How can I not?””

“Because he's seventeen. He's made a terrible choice, but he's still your son.””

Daniel's eyes softened.

“You're the one he tried to destroy.””

“I know.””

“And you're still worried about him?””

Laura looked toward the stairs.

“I'm worried about what happens to a boy when the adults around him teach him that love means ownership.””

Daniel had no answer.

At 10:30 p.m., a car pulled into the driveway.

Daniel looked through the window.

It was Melissa's silver SUV.

He frowned.

“What is she doing here?””

Laura stood.

“Did you call her?””

“No.””

The doorbell rang.

Daniel opened the door.

Melissa stood outside wearing a cream-colored coat, holding her purse tightly against her side.

“Daniel, we need to talk.””

He stepped aside.

“Come in.””

Melissa entered and immediately looked toward the living room.

“Where's Ethan?””

“Upstairs.””

“Is he okay?””

Daniel closed the door.

“That depends on what you mean by okay.””

Melissa turned toward him.

“I heard you were accusing him of something.””

“Interesting. Who told you?””

She hesitated.

“Ethan called me.””

Daniel nodded.

“Then perhaps you already know what Robert found.””

Melissa's expression remained composed.

“I don't know who Robert is or what he's found.””

“Then I'll make it simple. We have messages between you and Ethan discussing the fabrication of evidence against Laura.””

Melissa laughed.

“That's ridiculous.””

“Would you like to see them?””

“Messages can be edited.””

“These were recovered from the device Ethan used. The original files are being preserved.””

Melissa's eyes shifted briefly toward Laura.

Then she smiled coldly.

“Of course. Laura has finally convinced you that everyone is against her.””

Laura stepped forward.

“Melissa, I don't want to fight with you.””

“Then you should have stayed out of my son's life.””

Daniel's face hardened.

“Ethan is my son, too.””

Melissa ignored him.

“You've spent years pretending to be his mother.””

“I never pretended to be anything,” Laura replied.

“I cared about him.””

“You wanted your name on everything. The house, the money, the trust.””

Daniel stepped between them.

“Stop. You don't get to walk into my home and accuse my wife after helping our son fabricate evidence against her.””

Melissa's smile disappeared.

“You have no idea what you're doing.””

“Then explain it.””

She looked toward the staircase.

“Ethan needs to come with me.””

“No.””

“He's my son.””

“And he's not leaving in the middle of this conversation.””

Melissa grabbed her purse.

“Fine. Keep him here. But don't expect him to forgive you when he realizes what you've done.””

She turned toward the door.

Before leaving, she looked at Laura.

“You should be careful. People who build their lives on someone else's money don't always get to keep it.””

Laura didn't respond.

Melissa slammed the door.

Daniel stood silently for a moment.

Then he heard footsteps on the stairs.

Ethan was standing halfway down, gripping the railing.

He had heard everything.

“Dad,” he said, his voice shaking.

“Why did you bring Mom into this?””

Daniel looked at him.

“I didn't. She brought herself into it.””

Ethan swallowed.

Then he said something that made Daniel's blood run cold.

“Mom told me she had already talked to a lawyer.””

“What lawyer?””

Ethan looked toward Laura.

“The lawyer who said if Dad believed she was cheating, she could lose everything in the divorce.””

Daniel stared at his son.

“Ethan, why would Melissa be discussing my divorce?””

May you like

Ethan lowered his head.

“Because she said that was the plan.””
