Chapter 5: The Mother Behind the Lie
The following morning, Daniel woke before sunrise.
He hadn't slept more than two hours.
Melissa's final words, Ethan's confession, and the recovered messages had turned his entire understanding of the situation upside down.
He sat alone in his office, watching the security monitor.
At 6:18 a.m., Laura entered the kitchen.
She made coffee, placed two cups on a tray, and walked toward his office.
“You're still awake,” she said.
Daniel looked up.
“Couldn't sleep.””
She placed a cup beside him.
“Neither could I.””
He closed the laptop.
“I'm sorry you have to live through this.””
Laura sat across from him.
“I keep thinking about the day Ethan broke his arm.””
Daniel looked confused.
“What?””
“He was eleven. You were traveling for work. He fell off his bicycle, and I drove him to the emergency room.””
A faint smile appeared on her face.
“He was terrified of getting stitches. He squeezed my hand so hard that my fingers went numb.””
Daniel nodded.
“I remember.””
“I remember him asking whether you would be angry because he broke the bicycle.””
Daniel smiled sadly.
“And you told him I'd be happy he was safe.””
“Yes.””
Laura looked down at her coffee.
“I didn't do those things because I expected him to love me. I did them because he was a child who needed someone.””
Daniel reached across the desk.
“You still are that person.””
Laura looked at him.
“I don't know how much longer I can be.””
He understood.
For the first time, the possibility of losing Laura frightened him more than the thought of confronting Ethan.
At 8:00 a.m., Robert arrived with a secure laptop and a folder containing the preliminary forensic findings.
Daniel invited Laura to join them.
Ethan was also asked to attend.
He came downstairs reluctantly, wearing sweatpants and a wrinkled T-shirt.
“Do I have to be here?””
Daniel pointed toward a chair.
“Yes.””
Robert opened his laptop.
“Before we begin, I want everyone to understand that I'm not here to decide who's a good person or a bad person. I'm here to explain what the digital records show.””
Ethan leaned back.
“This is a waste of time.””
Robert ignored the remark.
He displayed the first file.
“This document contains the original text used to create the alleged messages. The document was created on a device linked to the backup phone.””
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“Continue.””
Robert displayed the creation date and the file history.
“The file was edited several times. Its earliest recoverable version contains a note about using photographs from the delivery and repair visits.””
Laura stared at the screen.
“So the photographs were deliberately selected?””
“Yes,” Robert answered.
“The document indicates they were chosen to support a particular narrative.””
Ethan shook his head.
“You can't prove I wrote that.””
Robert nodded.
“That's why I'm examining the account history, file access records, and communication logs rather than relying on the document alone.””
He opened another window.
“This is a message exchange recovered from the same device.””
The screen showed the conversation between Ethan and Melissa.
Robert read the messages aloud.
“Your mother wrote, 'Don't make it look too obvious. Use normal situations.'' Then Ethan replied, 'What if she denies everything?''”
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
Robert continued.
“Melissa responded, 'That's why you need more than one thing.''”
Laura pressed her fingers against her lips.
Ethan suddenly stood.
“Stop reading that!””
Daniel looked at him.
“Sit down.””
“It's private!””
“You used private information to accuse your stepmother of something she never did.””
Ethan's voice rose.
“You don't know what she did to me!””
Laura stood too.
“Tell us, Ethan. What did I do?””
He looked at her.
“You took Dad away!””
Laura's expression crumpled.
“I never asked him to love you less.””
“You don't understand!””
“Then help me understand.””
Ethan's breathing became uneven.
“You came into our house, and everything changed. Dad started asking what you thought about things. He started making decisions with you. He stopped asking me first.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“Ethan, I was your father before I met Laura. I never stopped being your father.””
“But you made her part of everything!””
“Because I wanted to build a life with her.””
Ethan pointed at Laura.
“She doesn't belong here!””
Daniel stood.
“That's enough.””
Robert quietly closed the message window.
“I'll leave you three to talk.””
Daniel nodded.
“Thank you.””
After Robert left, the room remained silent.
Ethan sat down again.
Daniel walked to the window.
“Your mother and I divorced because our marriage wasn't working. That wasn't Laura's fault.””
“She changed everything.””
“No. Our marriage ended before Laura entered our lives.””
Ethan looked down.
“Mom said you were going to give her everything.””
“Your mother has no right to tell you how my assets should be distributed.””
“She said Grandpa wanted everything to stay in our family.””
Daniel turned.
“Your grandfather wanted me to be responsible. He never told me I couldn't love another person.””
Ethan's eyes filled.
“Then why did you make a trust?””
“To protect the people I care about.””
“Even her?””
“Especially her. She's my wife.””
Ethan stood abruptly.
“You're choosing her.””
Daniel's voice broke slightly.
“I'm choosing the truth.””
Ethan walked upstairs.
A bedroom door slammed.
Laura sank into the chair.
“I think he's more frightened than angry,” she whispered.
Daniel sat beside her.
“Maybe. But being frightened doesn't give him the right to hurt you.””
That afternoon, Daniel called Melissa.
She answered on the third ring.
“What?””
“We need to talk about the messages.””
“I have nothing to say.””
“You helped Ethan fabricate evidence against my wife.””
Melissa laughed.
“Your wife? Is that what you're calling her now?””
“Don't play games.””
“Daniel, you have always been easy to manipulate when it comes to guilt.””
He frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“You felt guilty about the divorce. You felt guilty about Ethan growing up between two homes. You felt guilty about having a new wife. I knew you would do anything to keep everyone happy.””
Daniel gripped the phone.
“Did you encourage him to plant the phone?””
Melissa was silent.
“Melissa?””
“I told him to protect himself.””
“From what?””
“From losing his inheritance.””
“He was never losing it!””
“He believed he was!””
“And instead of explaining that to him, you helped him create lies?””
Melissa's voice became sharper.
“I was trying to protect my son.””
“By teaching him to destroy another person's reputation?””
“He doesn't trust Laura. I don't trust her either.””
“That doesn't justify what you did.””
Melissa sighed.
“You've always cared more about looking like a good husband than being a good father.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Did you contact an attorney about using these allegations in a divorce?””
A pause followed.
Then Melissa said, “You should speak to your own attorney.””
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
“That's not a denial.””
“I'm not discussing this over the phone.””
She hung up.
Daniel immediately called his attorney, Susan Miller.
Within an hour, Susan was sitting across from him in his office.
He explained everything.
Susan listened without interrupting.
When he finished, she opened her notebook.
“First, we preserve the evidence. Second, nobody makes threats or sends emotional messages. Third, we need to determine whether Melissa actually consulted an attorney and whether she intended to use these fabricated allegations in a legal proceeding.””
“Could she use this against Laura?””
“Anyone can make an accusation. That doesn't make it true. What matters is whether the evidence supports it.””
Daniel handed her copies of Robert's preliminary findings.
Susan studied them.
“This is serious.””
“Could Ethan face consequences?””
“He's seventeen. That changes how certain matters would be handled, but it doesn't make deliberate fabrication harmless. We'll need to focus on protecting Laura and ensuring the evidence is properly authenticated.””
Daniel nodded.
Susan looked up.
“One more thing. Do you have complete security coverage of the rooms where the evidence was planted?””
“I think so.””
“Then get the original recordings. Not just screenshots or clips.””
Daniel frowned.
“Why?””
“Because context matters. We need to see the entire sequence before and after the alleged discovery.””
That evening, Daniel and Laura sat together while Robert transferred the original footage into a secure archive.
They began with the day Ethan claimed to have discovered the phone.
The camera showed Ethan entering the office.
Then he left.
A few minutes later, he returned.
This time, he carried a small black object.
Robert paused the recording.
“Can you identify that?””
Daniel leaned closer.
“It looks like a phone case.””
Robert advanced the footage.
Ethan walked toward the staircase, paused, then entered the hallway leading to Laura's desk.
The camera near the living room captured him placing something inside the desk drawer.
Daniel's face went pale.
“That's where he said he found the phone.””
Laura whispered, “He put it there himself.””
Robert nodded.
“That's what the footage appears to show. We'll preserve the full recording for verification.””
Daniel watched the clip again.
His own son had carried the object into Laura's personal space, placed it there, and later claimed to have discovered it.
But Robert wasn't finished.
He opened another recording from the same afternoon.
It showed Ethan standing in the living room, looking directly at the camera.
Then he raised his phone and took a photograph of the hallway.
Daniel frowned.
“What is he photographing?””
Robert enlarged the image.
The photograph showed the desk drawer.
Then Robert opened the recovered image file from Ethan's phone.
Its timestamp was visible.
It had been taken eleven minutes before Ethan told Daniel he had found the evidence.
Laura covered her mouth.
“He photographed the drawer before he supposedly discovered it.””
Daniel couldn't speak.
Robert continued examining the files.
Then another message appeared on the screen.
It had been sent from Melissa to Ethan.
*Melissa:* Once he sees the pictures, he'll want a divorce. Just make sure she doesn't get a chance to explain.
Daniel stared at the sentence.
He turned toward Laura.
“I'm not divorcing you.””
She nodded, tears in her eyes.
But before either could say another word, Robert opened the final recovered conversation.
It contained a message from Melissa sent two days before the photographs were planted.
*Melissa:* I already have someone ready to help us. If this works, Laura won't just lose her place in the house.
A second message followed.
*Ethan:* What else?
May you like
Melissa's response made Daniel's blood run cold.
*Melissa:* She'll lose something much more important.
