Chapter 7: The Man Behind the Missing Footage
Daniel drove through the dark streets toward Robert's office with both hands gripping the steering wheel.
Laura sat beside him, staring through the windshield.
Neither had spoken since leaving the house.
Ethan had remained upstairs, crying behind his bedroom door. Daniel had wanted to bring him along, but Robert had specifically asked that the original recordings be examined without anyone else handling the equipment.
The image of Mark entering their house kept returning to Daniel's mind.
His younger brother.
The boy who had once slept beside him during thunderstorms.
The man who had stood beside him at their father's funeral.
The uncle who had helped Ethan buy his first car.
How could Mark have become involved in something like this?
When they arrived, Robert was waiting in the conference room.
A large monitor displayed a paused security recording.
“Daniel,” he said, “I think you should sit down.””
Daniel remained standing.
“Just show me.””
Robert pressed play.
The recording showed the driveway camera at 2:06 p.m. on a Thursday afternoon.
A silver SUV entered the property.
Daniel immediately recognized it.
“That's Mark's car.””
Robert nodded.
The vehicle stopped near the garage. Mark stepped out carrying a black leather bag.
He looked around before approaching the side entrance.
Then he used a key.
Daniel's expression changed.
“Why does he still have a key to my house?””
Laura looked at him.
“You gave him one after the plumbing emergency last winter.””
Daniel remembered.
Mark had come over while Daniel was away on a business trip. He had helped coordinate repairs and received a spare key in case the contractors needed access.
Daniel had never asked for it back.
On the screen, Mark entered the house.
Robert switched to another camera.
The living room recording showed Mark walking directly toward the hallway.
He didn't hesitate.
He knew where he was going.
“Can you show the next camera?”” Daniel asked.
Robert selected the office recording.
At 2:11 p.m., Mark entered Daniel's office.
He placed his leather bag on the desk, opened it, and removed several documents.
Then he walked toward the filing cabinet.
Daniel leaned forward.
“He's opening my private files.””
Robert paused the footage.
“Look at his right hand.””
Mark was holding a small electronic device.
“What is that?”” Laura asked.
“Possibly a storage device,” Robert replied.
“We'll need a clearer image to identify it.””
The recording continued.
Mark opened a drawer, examined several folders, and photographed documents with his phone.
Then he removed a sealed envelope.
Daniel recognized the envelope immediately.
It contained preliminary trust documents prepared by his attorney.
He had left it in the drawer because he intended to review it with Laura.
Mark slipped it into his bag.
Daniel stood.
“He stole my documents.””
Robert paused the video.
“There is another recording.””
He opened the hallway camera.
The screen showed Mark entering the area near Laura's personal desk.
He placed something inside a drawer.
Then he looked toward the ceiling.
For several seconds, he stood perfectly still.
Finally, he reached up and adjusted the camera.
The recording ended.
Daniel stared at the black screen.
“He disabled it.””
“That's what the footage suggests,” Robert said.
“But I recovered additional fragments from the system's local cache.””
He opened another file.
This time, the image was distorted.
Mark appeared again, returning to the hallway approximately six minutes later.
He was carrying the same black bag.
But his hands were empty.
Laura covered her mouth.
“He went into my desk.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Robert enlarged the image.
“There's something else. The timestamp indicates this happened before Ethan's supposed discovery of the phone.””
Daniel felt a wave of anger.
“Mark planted something too.””
“We can't identify the object from this recording alone,” Robert replied.
“But we have enough to establish that he entered the room, accessed private areas, and manipulated the security equipment.””
Daniel paced around the room.
“Why would he do this?””
Robert opened another folder.
“These are the recovered communications between Mark and an unidentified number. Some messages were deleted, but fragments remain.””
He displayed the first one.
*Mark:* The documents are exactly where I expected them.
The reply appeared below it.
*Unknown:* What about the camera?
*Mark:* I'll handle it.
Another exchange followed.
*Unknown:* The boy is ready?
*Mark:* He's angry enough. He'll do what he's told.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“The boy.””
He repeated the words quietly.
“That's my son.””
Laura reached for his arm.
Robert opened another recovered message.
*Unknown:* Once the accusation becomes public, the trust can be challenged.
*Mark:* And Daniel will have to choose between his wife and his family.
Daniel looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Robert hesitated.
“I think the plan involved more than embarrassing Laura. It may have been designed to create a legal and financial dispute around the trust.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Mark doesn't even know the full terms of the trust.””
“Apparently, he knows enough to believe it could affect his financial interests.””
Daniel looked at Robert.
“What interests?””
Robert opened a different document.
It was a company financial report.
Daniel recognized the name of the business he and Mark had built together nearly fifteen years earlier.
Hayes Commercial Properties.
Mark managed several of their investment properties and had access to company accounts.
Daniel studied the document.
“Why is this here?””
Robert pointed to a highlighted section.
“There's a transfer from one of the business accounts to an external company.””
Daniel leaned closer.
The amount was $185,000.
His face went cold.
“That's not an authorized transfer.””
“According to the records you've provided, it wasn't approved by you.””
“When did it happen?””
“Two months ago.””
Laura looked at him.
“Daniel, did you know about this?””
“No.””
Robert opened the transaction details.
“The receiving company is registered to an individual connected to your brother.””
Daniel sat down.
Suddenly, the pieces began fitting together.
The trust.
The fabricated accusations.
The missing footage.
The stolen documents.
Mark hadn't been trying to protect Ethan.
He had been using Ethan.
And Laura had been chosen as the target because destroying Daniel's marriage could create the confusion Mark needed.
Daniel called Susan immediately.
She answered while he was still looking at the transaction report.
“Daniel?””
“I need you to come to Robert's office. Now.””
“What happened?””
“My brother may have stolen company funds, entered my home without permission, and helped fabricate evidence against my wife.””
Susan was silent.
Then she said, “Don't confront him. Preserve everything. I'm on my way.””
Twenty-five minutes later, Susan arrived.
She reviewed the footage and financial documents carefully.
“This needs to be handled on two separate fronts,” she said.
“The personal allegations and the business transactions. We need to preserve the original recordings, authenticate the digital evidence, and notify the appropriate authorities if the evidence supports theft or unlawful access.””
Daniel nodded.
“What about the trust?””
“We should notify the estate attorney and ensure nobody can alter the documents without authorization.””
Laura looked at the monitor.
“Can Mark still get into the house?””
Daniel shook his head.
“Not anymore.””
Susan closed her notebook.
“There's one more question. Did Mark know that the security system had backup storage?””
Daniel frowned.
“He helped me install it.””
“Then he may have known that disabling one camera wouldn't necessarily erase the original recording.””
Robert looked up.
“Actually, there's a possibility he knew exactly that.””
Daniel turned toward him.
“What do you mean?””
Robert opened the administrator log.
“The camera interruption was performed using an account associated with Mark's old maintenance login. It wasn't a random system failure.””
Daniel felt sick.
“So he deliberately disabled the camera.””
“Yes. But he may have underestimated the local backup system.””
Susan stood.
“We need to stop here. I'll contact the appropriate professionals tomorrow morning.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I want Mark to answer for this.””
“He will have an opportunity to respond. But we do this properly.””
On the drive home, Laura rested her head against the window.
“Do you think Mark ever liked me?”” she asked suddenly.
Daniel glanced at her.
“What?””
“Before all this. Did he ever actually accept me?””
Daniel thought about it.
Mark had always been polite.
He had attended family dinners, brought gifts on holidays, and made jokes about Laura's cooking.
But there had been moments.
Little comments about how quickly Daniel had remarried.
Questions about whether Laura was involved in the business.
Remarks about the trust.
Daniel had dismissed them as harmless.
“I don't know,” he admitted.
Laura looked down.
“I think I was the easiest person to blame.””
Daniel reached across the console and held her hand.
“You were never the problem.””
When they arrived home, the house was quiet.
Ethan was sitting at the dining table.
His eyes were swollen.
He looked up as they entered.
“Did you find him?””
Daniel stopped.
“What?””
“Uncle Mark.””
Daniel pulled out a chair.
“Yes.””
Ethan swallowed.
“What did he do?””
Daniel placed his phone on the table.
“He entered the house while we were away. He took confidential documents. He placed something in your stepmother's desk. He also disabled one of the cameras.””
Ethan's face went pale.
“Was it the envelope?””
Daniel stared at him.
“What envelope?””
Ethan covered his mouth.
For several seconds, he couldn't speak.
Then he whispered, “Uncle Mark gave me an envelope. He said I should keep it hidden until Dad believed Laura was cheating.””
Laura stepped forward.
“What's inside?””
Ethan began shaking.
“I don't know.””
Daniel leaned closer.
“Where is it?””
Ethan looked toward the staircase.
“In my closet.””
Daniel stood immediately.
“Go get it.””
Ethan ran upstairs.
A few minutes later, he returned carrying a thick brown envelope.
He placed it on the table.
Daniel opened it carefully.
Inside were several photographs of Laura.
But these were different.
They had been taken from a distance, through windows, and from across parking lots.
Some showed Laura entering grocery stores.
Others showed her walking toward her car.
One showed her speaking with a man outside a restaurant.
Daniel examined it.
He recognized the man.
It was Laura's cousin, Andrew.
The photograph had been taken during a family lunch.
But beneath the pictures were several typed pages.
Daniel read the first paragraph.
Then he stopped.
The document contained a detailed accusation against Laura, describing supposed meetings with another man and suggesting she had been secretly taking money from the family business.
At the bottom was a signature.
Not Laura's.
Not Mark's.
It was Ethan's.
Daniel slowly looked up.
“Did you sign this?””
Ethan nodded, crying.
“Uncle Mark told me it was just a draft.””
Laura stared at the pages.
“What did he tell you would happen?””
Ethan's voice broke.
“He said that if Dad believed the story, you'd leave. Then Mom would help him fix the trust.””
Daniel turned another page.
There was a handwritten note in Mark's familiar handwriting.
*Once Daniel signs the separation agreement, we move the money before he realizes what's happening.*
Daniel felt the room go silent.
Then his phone rang.
The caller ID displayed his brother's name.
Mark Hayes.
Daniel answered.
“Hello.””
Mark's voice came through casually.
“Hey, little brother. I heard you've been asking questions.””
Daniel looked at the envelope.
“Yes.””
A brief silence followed.
Then Mark laughed.
“Listen, we need to talk. Face-to-face.””
Daniel's voice was cold.
“About the money you stole?””
The laughter stopped.
Mark spoke slowly.
“Be careful, Daniel.””
“Why?””
“Because if you keep digging, you're going to discover things about Laura that you really don't want to know.””
Daniel looked at his wife.
Then he answered.
“I've already discovered enough about you.””
Mark's voice hardened.
“Then you haven't seen the last of me.””
The call ended.
Daniel lowered his phone.
For the first time, he understood that Mark wasn't frightened by the evidence.
May you like
He was frightened by what else the evidence might reveal.
And the brown envelope had just exposed something Daniel hadn't even known to look for.
