Chapter 3: The Camera Never Lied

Daniel didn't confront Ethan that night.

He wanted to.

Every instinct told him to walk upstairs, open his son's bedroom door, and demand an explanation.

But something stopped him.

If Ethan had deliberately planted evidence, confronting him without understanding the full situation could give him time to destroy whatever else he had hidden.

So Daniel kept watching.

At 11:42 p.m., he opened the security system again.

He reviewed the footage from the afternoon when the photographs first appeared.

This time, he focused on the office camera.

The image was clear.

Ethan entered carrying a brown envelope.

He placed it on Daniel's desk, opened a drawer, and removed the old backup phone.

Then he sat down.

For nearly four minutes, he used the phone while looking at something on his laptop.

Afterward, he took several printed sheets from the envelope.

Daniel froze the image.

One sheet appeared to contain a photograph.

Another had lines of text.

He zoomed in as far as the system allowed.

The words weren't clear.

But one thing was unmistakable.

Ethan had brought the documents into the office before Laura was ever accused.

Daniel leaned back.

His chest felt tight.

He remembered every time Laura had defended Ethan.

Every school meeting she attended.

Every time she stayed awake waiting for him to come home.

And now he was looking at his own son behaving like someone planning a crime.

At 12:15 a.m., Daniel walked upstairs.

Laura was awake, sitting against the headboard with a book resting unopened in her lap.

“Couldn't sleep?”” she asked.

Daniel closed the bedroom door.

“No.””

He sat beside her.

“I watched the security footage.””

Laura looked at him carefully.

“And?””

Daniel struggled to find the right words.

“I saw Ethan entering my office with an envelope. He took the backup phone.””

Laura's face went pale.

“Are you saying he planted those things?””

“I don't know yet. But something isn't adding up.””

She closed her book.

“Daniel, I need you to listen to me.””

He turned toward her.

“I am.””

“I don't hate your son. Even after everything he's said, I don't hate him. But I won't spend the rest of my life defending myself against lies.””

Daniel lowered his head.

“I know.””

“No, I don't think you do. Yesterday, when you looked at those photographs, you looked at me like you were wondering whether you had married a stranger.””

His eyes filled.

“Laura…”

“I have spent seven years trying to make this house feel like a home for him. I never asked him to call me Mom. I never demanded that he love me. I just wanted him to feel safe.””

She wiped a tear from her cheek.

“And now I'm afraid to walk into my own kitchen because I don't know what he'll accuse me of next.””

Daniel took her hands.

“I'm sorry.””

She looked at him.

“Don't apologize unless you're ready to find out the truth, even if it hurts.””

Daniel nodded.

“I am.””

The next morning, he called a private digital forensics specialist named Robert Klein.

Robert had helped Daniel's company investigate an employee data breach several years earlier. He was thorough, discreet, and experienced in examining electronic evidence.

Daniel explained the situation without exaggerating.

“I need you to examine some files, a phone, and security footage,” he said.

“I believe someone may have fabricated messages and planted physical evidence in my home.””

Robert was silent for a moment.

“Do you have the original device?””

“Possibly.””

“Then don't reset it, don't delete anything, and don't let anyone handle it unnecessarily. We need to preserve the evidence.””

Daniel glanced toward the staircase.

“My son is involved.””

Robert's voice softened.

“Then you need to be especially careful.””

That afternoon, Daniel arranged to meet Robert at his office.

He brought copies of the security recordings and the printed photographs Ethan had provided.

Robert examined them carefully.

“Do you recognize these locations?”” he asked.

“Every one of them.””

“And these photographs?””

“My wife is speaking to delivery workers and contractors. Nothing unusual.””

Robert tapped the printed messages.

“These are more interesting.””

“Why?””

“They look like screenshots, but they don't contain the normal metadata or identifying details I'd expect from a genuine conversation export.””

Daniel frowned.

“Could they be fake?””

“They could be. I won't conclude that from appearance alone. But I'd like to examine the original file and the device it came from.””

Daniel handed him the old backup phone.

Robert connected it to a forensic workstation.

After several minutes, he looked up.

“Mr. Hayes, I have a question.””

“Go ahead.””

“Who had access to this phone?””

Daniel hesitated.

“My son may have.””

Robert nodded.

“Do you know whether he had access to your computer?””

“He uses it sometimes for schoolwork.””

“Was he given permission to access your wife's personal account?””

“No.””

Robert returned to the screen.

“Then we need to establish how these files were created and where they originated.””

Daniel watched as Robert opened the device's file history.

Several folders appeared.

One was labeled simply:

*LAURA*

Inside were photographs, screenshots, and text documents.

Robert clicked one of the files.

The creation date appeared.

Daniel leaned forward.

“That's the day before Ethan accused her.””

Robert clicked another.

Its creation time was only minutes earlier.

“Mr. Hayes,” he said carefully, “these documents appear to have been assembled on this device. I can't yet tell you who created them, but the timeline is important.””

Daniel stared at the screen.

“Can you recover the original files?””

“I'm working on it.””

A few minutes later, Robert opened a deleted folder.

Inside was a document containing several lines of text.

The first sentence read:

*Make it look like she was hiding something when Dad was away.*

Daniel stopped breathing for a moment.

Robert didn't say anything.

He opened the next line.

*Use the pictures from the delivery day.*

Then another.

*Dad won't question it if it looks like I found the messages myself.*

Daniel slowly stood.

“Who wrote that?””

Robert turned the screen slightly.

“I'll need to verify the file history and account information. But the document appears to have been created using the same device.””

Daniel felt the room tilt.

His son hadn't merely misunderstood something.

Someone had planned this.

Someone had used his wife's ordinary daily activities to manufacture an accusation designed to destroy her reputation.

And that someone appeared to be Ethan.

When Daniel returned home, Laura was sitting at the dining table, sorting through mail.

She looked up.

“How did it go?””

Daniel placed his briefcase down.

“Robert found something.””

Laura stood.

“What?””

He hesitated.

“I don't want to tell you anything until everything is verified.””

Her expression tightened.

“Is it about Ethan?””

Daniel nodded.

Before he could continue, the front door opened.

Ethan walked inside, holding a paper shopping bag.

He glanced at his father.

“Hey.””

Daniel looked at him for several seconds.

“Where have you been?””

“Out.””

“Where?””

“Why?””

“I'm asking you a question.””

Ethan dropped the bag onto the counter.

“I went to get something to eat.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Did you use my office computer yesterday?””

Ethan's eyes flickered.

“No.””

“Are you sure?””

“Yeah. Why?””

Daniel watched his face.

“Did you create those photographs and messages?””

Ethan laughed.

“What?””

“Did you fabricate the evidence against Laura?””

The shopping bag slipped slightly from Ethan's hand.

For one brief moment, his face lost all expression.

Then he recovered.

“Are you serious?””

Daniel didn't move.

“Answer me.””

Ethan looked toward Laura.

She stood silently beside the dining table.

“She's been telling you lies,” he said.

“That's not what I asked.””

“You're choosing her over your own son?””

Daniel's voice grew quieter.

“I'm asking whether you made those documents.””

Ethan shook his head.

“I didn't do anything.””

Daniel took a breath.

“Robert is examining the phone and the files. We have security footage, too.””

Ethan's face changed.

Only slightly.

But Daniel saw it.

“What footage?”” Ethan asked.

“The footage from the office.””

Ethan swallowed.

“You can't just spy on me.””

“The cameras are installed throughout the house. You knew that.””

“You're recording everything I do?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Only now am I wishing I had paid closer attention.””

Ethan's eyes filled.

“You're making me sound like some kind of criminal.””

Laura finally spoke.

“Ethan, nobody wants that. We just want the truth.””

He turned toward her.

“Stay out of this!””

Daniel stepped between them.

“Don't speak to her like that.””

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“Of course. You always defend her.””

“Because she hasn't done anything wrong.””

Ethan stared at his father.

Then he did something neither adult expected.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

“If you think I'm lying, call Mom.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why would I call Melissa?””

“Because she knows what Laura is really like.””

Laura's expression turned cold.

“What does your mother have to do with this?””

Ethan ignored her.

“Call her, Dad. She knows everything.””

Daniel took out his own phone.

He didn't call Melissa.

Instead, he called Robert.

“Have you recovered the deleted files?”” he asked.

Robert answered almost immediately.

“Yes. And there's something else.””

Daniel stepped away from the table.

“What is it?””

“We found a message thread between the device and another account. The conversation suggests your son wasn't acting entirely alone.””

Daniel's grip tightened around the phone.

“Who was he communicating with?””

Robert paused.

“Your ex-wife.””

Daniel looked toward Ethan.

His son was watching him now.

And for the first time since the accusations began, Ethan looked genuinely afraid.

Robert continued.

“There's also a message sent the night before the evidence was planted. It says, 'Once Dad sees what she really is, he'll finally put things back the way they belong.''”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“What does the next message say?””

Robert took a breath.

“It's from Melissa.””

He read it slowly.

“'Good. But don't let him check the cameras.''”

Daniel looked up.

May you like

Across the room, Ethan had gone completely pale.

And suddenly, Daniel understood that the lie against Laura might have been only the beginning of a much bigger betrayal.
