Chapter 6: The Plan Was Bigger Than Divorce
Daniel read Melissa's message again.
“She'll lose something much more important.””
The words seemed to hang in the room.
Laura stood beside him, her face drained of color.
“What does she mean?””
Robert looked at the screen.
“I don't know yet. This conversation appears to be incomplete. There may be additional messages on another device.””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“Can you recover them?””
“I'll try. The account may have synchronized with another phone or computer.””
Laura sat down.
“Daniel, what else could she possibly want?””
He didn't answer.
His mind was moving through possibilities.
The inheritance.
The house.
The trust.
But Melissa had already known that the fabricated accusations could potentially lead to a divorce. Why would she need another plan?
He looked at Robert.
“Please continue. I want to know who this other person is.””
Robert nodded.
“There's another issue. The footage from the hallway camera has a short gap.””
Daniel frowned.
“What kind of gap?””
“Approximately four minutes. The system stopped recording and then resumed.””
“Was it a power failure?””
“I'm checking that.””
Robert opened the system log.
“The other cameras continued recording during that period. Only this channel stopped.””
Daniel stared at the screen.
“Can someone disable one camera without affecting the others?””
“With the right access, yes.””
Laura looked toward him.
“Ethan knows the security system.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“He helped me install some of the cameras.””
Robert examined the log.
“There's a user command associated with the interruption. I can't identify the person from this entry alone, but the command was issued through an administrator account.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Who has administrator access?””
“According to the configuration, you do.””
“And Ethan?””
“He had temporary access during the installation.””
Daniel felt a chill move through him.
He remembered allowing Ethan to help configure the system.
He had been proud that his son understood technology.
He had even joked that Ethan would someday run the security department at the family business.
Now he wondered how much of that access had been used against him.
Robert packed his equipment.
“I'll continue recovering the missing data. In the meantime, don't change the system settings.””
Daniel nodded.
After Robert left, Laura walked into the kitchen.
She filled a glass with water but didn't drink it.
Daniel followed.
“What's going through your mind?””
Laura stared at the glass.
“I keep wondering how long he planned this.””
“We'll find out.””
“And Melissa…”
Daniel pulled out a chair.
“She's responsible for her own choices.””
Laura sat.
“Do you think Ethan understands what he's done?””
Daniel looked toward the stairs.
“I don't know anymore.””
At that moment, Ethan appeared in the doorway.
“Can I talk to you?””
Daniel looked at him.
“About what?””
“Just you and me.””
Laura immediately stood.
“I'll give you some privacy.””
Ethan looked uncomfortable.
“I don't care if she stays.””
Laura paused.
Daniel gestured toward the chair.
“Sit down.””
Ethan sat.
For several seconds, he stared at his hands.
Then he spoke.
“Are you going to kick me out?””
Daniel looked surprised.
“No.””
“Mom says you might.””
“Your mother doesn't decide what happens in this house.””
Ethan swallowed.
“Are you going to send me away?””
“Ethan, I want to understand why you thought this was acceptable.””
He looked down.
“Because I was scared.””
“Scared of what?””
“Losing everything.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“You were never going to lose your inheritance.””
“You don't know that.””
“I do. I wrote the trust documents.””
Ethan looked up.
“Then why is Laura included?””
“Because I love her.””
Ethan's jaw tightened.
“That's not fair.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Life isn't a contest where I can only love one person.””
Ethan remained silent.
“Your mother and I have been divorced for years,” Daniel continued.
“Laura didn't steal your place. She didn't take your childhood away. She didn't replace you.””
“She gets everything.””
“No. She gets a place in my life. You have a place in my life that nobody else can take.””
Ethan's eyes turned red.
“Then why do you always believe her?””
Daniel was quiet.
“I didn't believe her at first. That's part of what I regret.””
Ethan looked away.
Daniel continued.
“I let you put her on trial without asking why you had so much so-called evidence. I made her defend herself in her own home.””
Laura stood silently near the kitchen counter.
Ethan rubbed his eyes.
“I didn't think it would get this bad.””
Daniel stared at him.
“What did you think would happen?””
“I thought you'd get angry. Maybe you'd tell her to leave.””
“And then?””
Ethan didn't answer.
“Did you think about what would happen to Laura if people believed those accusations? What if her friends saw those photographs? What if someone at her workplace heard the rumors?””
“I didn't think about that.””
“You didn't think about her at all.””
Ethan's face crumpled.
For a moment, Daniel saw the little boy who used to fall asleep on his shoulder during long car rides.
Then Ethan said something that shattered the moment.
“Mom said Laura deserved it.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Your mother is not responsible for every choice you make.””
“But she told me—”
“You chose to listen. You chose to create those files. You chose to put that phone in her desk.””
Ethan began crying.
“I just wanted things to go back to how they were.””
Daniel's voice softened.
“They can't go back to how they were. But we can decide what happens next.””
Ethan wiped his face.
“Can you promise you won't send me away?””
“I can promise that I'll keep trying to be your father. But I won't protect lies.””
Ethan nodded.
Then he stood.
“I'm going upstairs.””
Daniel let him go.
Laura waited until his footsteps disappeared.
“He's frightened,” she whispered.
“I know.””
“But he's still hiding something.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What makes you say that?””
“When you asked him about Melissa, he never denied knowing about the other person.””
Daniel thought about it.
She was right.
That evening, Susan called.
“Daniel, I made some inquiries.””
“What did you find?””
“Melissa contacted a family-law attorney three weeks ago.””
Daniel sat straighter.
“About our marriage?””
“Apparently. But there's something else. The attorney's office has a record of a proposed strategy involving allegations of marital misconduct and disputed access to marital assets.””
Daniel's stomach tightened.
“Did Melissa provide the photographs?””
“I'm not sure. The attorney won't discuss confidential communications without proper authorization. But I did find out that Melissa also contacted someone who specializes in private investigations.””
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
“Why would she hire a private investigator?””
“To collect information, presumably.””
“About Laura?””
“Possibly. I'm trying to establish the details.””
Daniel rubbed his face.
“Keep looking.””
After ending the call, he went upstairs.
Ethan's bedroom door was partly open.
Daniel knocked.
“Can I come in?””
“Whatever.””
Daniel entered.
Ethan was sitting at his desk, wearing headphones.
His laptop was open.
Daniel noticed a messaging application minimized in the corner.
“Who were you talking to?””
Ethan quickly closed the laptop.
“Nobody.””
“Ethan.””
“It's private.””
Daniel didn't raise his voice.
“Your mother mentioned someone else helping with this plan. Who is it?””
Ethan's face went pale.
“What?””
“Robert found the message. Your mother said she already had someone ready to help.””
Ethan stood.
“I don't know.””
“Think carefully.””
“I said I don't know!””
Daniel looked at the laptop.
“Then show me the conversation.””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because you don't trust me!””
Daniel exhaled.
“Right now, I don't know what to believe.””
Ethan moved toward the door.
“Get out.””
Daniel stepped aside.
But as he did, a notification appeared on the laptop screen.
The message was visible for only a second.
*Unknown Number:* Did your dad find the missing footage yet?
Daniel stopped.
Ethan slammed the laptop shut.
Too late.
Daniel had seen it.
He turned slowly.
“Who sent that message?””
“Nobody.””
“Ethan, I read it.””
“It's just a friend.””
“Which friend?””
Ethan looked trapped.
Daniel pulled out his phone.
“I want Robert to examine that device.””
“You can't!””
“Why not?””
“Because there are things you don't understand!””
Daniel's voice became quiet.
“Then explain them.””
Ethan stared at him.
His lips trembled.
Finally, he whispered, “The person who helped Mom is someone you know.””
Daniel felt a cold sensation move through his chest.
“Who?””
Ethan looked toward the window.
Then he answered.
“Uncle Mark.””
Daniel froze.
Mark was his younger brother.
They had grown up together, built their first business together, and remained close even after Daniel's divorce.
Mark had attended Daniel and Laura's wedding.
He had stood beside Daniel during the ceremony and toasted the couple at the reception.
He had even helped Ethan buy his first car.
“That's impossible,” Daniel said.
Ethan shook his head.
“He said you were making a mistake.””
“Mark helped your mother?””
“He said Laura was going to take control of the family business.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“What exactly did he do?””
Ethan looked at him with tears in his eyes.
“He helped Mom find out about the trust. He told her which documents to look for. He said if Dad believed Laura was cheating, he could stop the trust before it became permanent.””
Daniel stared at his son.
“Did he help you create the messages?””
Ethan hesitated.
“He gave me the pictures.””
“What pictures?””
“The ones of Laura with those men.””
Daniel felt sick.
“Your uncle gave you those?””
Ethan nodded.
“He said he had been watching her.””
Laura, who had been standing outside the partly open door, slowly entered.
“Watching me?””
Ethan looked down.
“He said he had proof you were meeting someone.””
Laura's face went white.
“Who?””
“I don't know.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Ethan, what did Mark tell you about the security cameras?””
Ethan's eyes widened.
He said nothing.
Daniel repeated the question.
“What did your uncle tell you?””
Ethan finally whispered, “He said the cameras were the only thing that could ruin everything.””
Daniel felt his pulse quicken.
“Did Mark tell you to disable one?””
Ethan nodded.
“Which camera?””
“The hallway camera.””
Daniel stared at him.
“Why?””
Ethan's voice dropped to almost nothing.
“Because he said there was something on it that you could never be allowed to see.””
Laura gripped the doorframe.
Daniel looked toward the staircase, then back at his son.
“What happened in that hallway?””
Ethan began shaking.
“I don't know everything.””
“But you know something.””
He nodded.
Then, with tears running down his face, he said the words Daniel would remember for the rest of his life.
“Uncle Mark said he was going to put something in Laura's room. Something that would make the pictures look real. But he told me not to ask what it was.””
Daniel immediately called Robert.
“Don't stop working on that missing footage,” he said urgently.
“We have a new suspect.””
Robert asked for the name.
Daniel looked at Laura.
“Mark Hayes.””
There was a long silence.
Then Robert replied.
“Daniel, I think you need to come back to the office tonight.””
“Why?””
“Because I may have recovered part of the missing recording.””
Daniel's grip tightened.
“What does it show?””
Robert hesitated.
“Someone entering your house while you and Laura were away.””
“Who?””
Another pause.
Then Robert answered.
“Your brother.””
Daniel looked at Ethan.
His son was crying silently.
May you like
And suddenly, the security footage no longer seemed like the final piece of evidence.
It seemed like the beginning of a much darker story.
