Chapter 2: The Evidence in Her Desk

Daniel stared at the photographs in his son's hands.

“What exactly am I looking at?”” he asked.

Ethan lowered his eyes.

“I didn't want to believe it either.””

Laura slowly stood from the sofa.

“Ethan, what are those?””

He didn't answer her.

Instead, he handed the photographs to his father.

Daniel examined the first one.

It showed Laura standing near the front entrance, talking to a man in a blue delivery uniform.

The second showed her in the hallway with a repairman.

The third was a screenshot of a supposed text conversation.

The words were suggestive enough to make Daniel's jaw tighten.

He read them once.

Then again.

“Where did you get these?””

“In her desk.””

Laura stared at him.

“My desk?””

Ethan nodded.

“I was looking for a charger. The drawer was open.””

Daniel looked at the photographs again.

“Laura, do you know what this is about?””

“No.””

She walked toward him.

“Let me see.””

Daniel hesitated before handing her the papers.

Laura studied the first two photographs.

“These are from the day the washing machine was delivered and the day the plumber came.””

Ethan folded his arms.

“That's what you told Dad?””

“Because that's what happened.””

“And the messages?”” Daniel asked.

Laura looked at the screenshot.

Her face drained of color.

“I've never seen this conversation.””

Ethan let out a quiet, bitter laugh.

“Of course.””

Laura looked directly at him.

“Ethan, did you make these?””

His expression changed instantly.

“Why would you say that?””

“Because these photographs have nothing to do with what you're suggesting.””

“You don't get to question me just because you got caught.””

Daniel raised his hand.

“Enough. Both of you.””

Laura placed the papers on the coffee table.

“Daniel, I need you to understand something. I have never been unfaithful to you. I've never sent those messages. I don't even know who created them.””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“I need to understand what's going on.””

“Then ask me. Don't let a few printed pictures tell you who I am.””

Ethan's eyes filled with tears.

“You always do this.””

Laura turned toward him.

“Do what?””

“Make me feel like I'm crazy whenever I tell Dad something about you.””

Daniel looked at his son.

“Ethan, has something happened between you and Laura that I don't know about?””

Ethan shook his head.

“Nothing I can prove.””

The sentence landed heavily in the room.

Laura stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

He wiped his eyes.

“Forget it.””

Daniel stepped toward him.

“No. If you're accusing someone in this house of something serious, you need to explain.””

Ethan hesitated.

Then he delivered the sentence he had rehearsed.

“I've seen her acting differently when you're gone. She dresses up, spends time on her phone, and hides conversations. I thought I was imagining things, but now I know I'm not.””

Laura's hands began to tremble.

“Daniel, I don't hide anything from you.””

“I know,” Daniel said, though his voice lacked certainty.

Ethan noticed.

That small hesitation was enough.

He had created doubt.

And doubt was all he needed.

Daniel gathered the photographs.

“I'm going to keep these.””

Laura looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because I need time to figure out what's happening.””

She nodded slowly.

“Then I need you to remember the woman you've lived with for seven years while you're figuring it out.””

She walked upstairs.

The sound of her bedroom door closing seemed louder than it should have.

Ethan watched his father.

“I'm sorry, Dad.””

Daniel sat down.

“Why didn't you tell me sooner?””

“I didn't want to ruin your marriage.””

Daniel looked at the papers again.

For the first time, Ethan felt that his plan might actually work.

But he still needed something more convincing.

The following morning, Laura was preparing to leave for work when she noticed Daniel sitting at the kitchen table.

He hadn't slept well.

“Morning,” she said softly.

“Morning.””

She poured herself coffee.

“Did you look at those photographs again?””

Daniel nodded.

“I did.””

“And?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“I think we need to find out where those messages came from.””

Laura exhaled.

“Thank you.””

Daniel reached for her hand.

“I don't want to accuse you of anything. But you have to understand how this looks.””

Laura gently withdrew her hand.

“No, Daniel. I understand how it was designed to look.””

He frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“Someone took ordinary photographs and attached a story to them. That's not proof. That's manipulation.””

Daniel didn't answer.

Before he could speak, Ethan entered the kitchen.

He was wearing his school backpack.

“Can you drive me?””

Daniel stood.

“Sure.””

As he passed Laura, Ethan deliberately knocked a spoon from the counter.

It clattered against the tile.

“Watch where you're standing,” he muttered.

Laura bent to pick it up.

“Have a good day, Ethan.””

He didn't respond.

At school, Ethan spent most of lunch messaging his mother.

*Ethan:* Dad saw everything.

*Melissa:* What did he say?

*Ethan:* He's suspicious now.

*Melissa:* You need to make him understand that this isn't just about money.

Ethan stared at the screen.

*Ethan:* I know.

*Melissa:* If Laura gets him to turn against you, you'll lose everything.

He put his phone away.

He hadn't told Melissa the entire truth.

He hadn't told her that the photographs were harmless.

He hadn't told her that the messages were fabricated.

He only told her what he needed her to believe.

That evening, Daniel asked Laura to sit with him in the living room.

“I've been thinking,” he began.

Laura waited.

“I want to check the old backup phone Ethan mentioned.””

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

“What phone?””

“The one supposedly connected to the messages.””

“I never had an old backup phone in my desk.””

Daniel looked surprised.

“Ethan said he found one.””

Laura shook her head.

“My desk has been locked for months. I keep personal documents there.””

Daniel stood.

“Then let's look.””

They went upstairs.

Laura unlocked the desk drawer and pulled it open.

Inside were notebooks, bills, a small jewelry box, and several folders.

There was no phone.

Daniel searched the other drawers.

Nothing.

“Maybe Ethan moved it,” he said.

Laura looked at him.

“Why would he move something he supposedly found?””

Daniel didn't answer.

He called downstairs.

“Ethan! Come here!””

A few seconds later, Ethan appeared in the doorway.

“What?””

“Where's the phone you said you found?””

Ethan blinked.

“What phone?””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“The backup phone. The one you found in Laura's desk.””

“Oh. I don't know.””

“You said it was there.””

“I gave you the pictures. Why does the phone matter?””

“Because I want to see the original messages.””

Ethan shrugged.

“Maybe she put it somewhere else.””

Laura stepped forward.

“Ethan, I want you to tell us exactly where you found it.””

He looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because I didn't put it in my desk.””

His eyes narrowed.

“Are you calling me a liar?””

“No. I'm asking you a question.””

“You're always doing this!””

Daniel raised his voice.

“Enough!””

Ethan turned toward his father, his eyes suddenly wet.

“I knew you'd take her side.””

He walked away before Daniel could respond.

Laura sat on the edge of the bed.

“Daniel, something isn't right.””

“I know.””

“Then why are you still treating this like I have to prove I didn't do something?””

Daniel sat beside her.

“I'm trying to keep this from becoming a bigger problem.””

Laura looked at him.

“It already is.””

That night, Daniel went downstairs to check the home security system.

He remembered that the living room camera had recorded most of the hallway.

If Ethan had really found the phone in Laura's desk, perhaps there would be footage of him discovering it.

Daniel opened the security application on his laptop.

He selected the date of Ethan's alleged discovery.

The screen showed several recordings.

He watched the first few minutes.

Then he stopped.

At 3:17 p.m., Ethan entered the downstairs hallway carrying a small envelope.

He looked toward the kitchen.

Then toward the office.

After checking that nobody was watching, he walked into the home office.

Daniel leaned closer to the screen.

Ethan came out six minutes later.

His hands were empty.

Daniel replayed the clip.

Then he opened the recording from the camera near the living room.

The footage showed Ethan walking upstairs.

But there was something else.

At 3:26 p.m., he returned downstairs holding a phone.

Daniel paused the video.

He zoomed in.

It was the old backup phone.

His stomach tightened.

“Why would Ethan have that phone?”” he whispered.

He checked the recording again.

This time, he noticed Ethan looking directly toward the camera.

Then the boy smiled.

It was a small smile.

But Daniel had never seen that expression on his son's face before.

Suddenly, his phone vibrated.

A message from Ethan appeared.

*Ethan:* Dad, please don't let her convince you I'm lying. I have more proof.

Daniel stared at the screen.

More proof?

May you like

He looked back at the paused security footage.

And for the first time, he began to wonder whether the person he needed to investigate was not Laura at all.
