Chapter 2: The Woman They Underestimated

The first ambulance sirens arrived twelve minutes later.

I counted every second.

Every contraction.

Every breath.

The Sterling family had spent years teaching me to stay quiet.

They forgot quiet people could still be dangerous.

The paramedics finally forced the bathroom door open.

The first person I saw was not Julian.

Not Eleanor.

Not anyone from the family.

It was a young paramedic with tired eyes and a calm voice.

"Ma'am, can you tell me your name?""

"Audrey Sterling.""

"How far along?""

"Thirty-four weeks.""

He looked at his partner.

Then back at me.

"Okay. We're moving quickly.""

As they helped me onto the stretcher, I saw Julian standing at the end of the hallway.

His face was pale.

For the first time that night, he looked afraid.

But I no longer knew if he was afraid for me.

Or afraid of what I knew.

"Audrey.""

I looked at him.

He took one step forward.

"I was going to come back.""

I almost smiled.

"You left me locked in a bathroom.""

"I didn't lock it.""

"No.""

I held his gaze.

"You just let someone else do it.""

His mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

The paramedics wheeled me away.

Behind him, Eleanor stood perfectly still.

Her expensive dress.

Her diamond necklace.

Her controlled expression.

She looked less like a worried mother-in-law and more like someone calculating damage.

At the hospital, everything moved quickly.

Monitors.

Questions.

Doctors.

The sterile smell of medicine replaced the roses and champagne from the wedding.

A nurse adjusted my IV.

"You need to relax as much as possible.""

I nodded.

But relaxing was impossible.

Not when my husband had chosen his family's reputation over our child.

Not when I had spent months defending him.

The doctor came in.

"Audrey, we're going to try to delay delivery if we can.""

"Is the baby okay?""

"Right now, the heartbeat looks good.""

I closed my eyes.

The relief nearly broke me.

"Thank you.""

After the doctor left, Diana arrived.

She walked into the room carrying a folder.

No wedding clothes.

No smile.

Just business.

"How are you?""

"Angry.""

"Good.""

I looked at her.

She raised an eyebrow.

"Anger is useful. Panic isn't.""

I almost laughed.

"You always say that.""

"Because you always try to carry everything alone.""

She placed the folder on the table.

"Tell me everything.""

So I did.

The bathroom.

The lock.

Julian.

The documents.

Diana listened without interrupting.

When I finished, she opened the folder.

"We received the financial records you submitted.""

I looked away.

"I didn't want to believe it was him.""

"I know.""

"He's the father of my child.""

"I know.""

"I kept looking for another explanation.""

Diana leaned forward.

"And what did he give you tonight?""

I didn't answer.

Because I already knew.

Nothing.

A knock interrupted us.

Julian stood at the door.

Diana immediately closed the folder.

His eyes moved between us.

"Aren't you going to ask if she's okay?""

I stared at him.

"You tell me.""

His face tightened.

"I made a mistake.""

"A mistake?""

"I panicked.""

"You watched your mother lock me away.""

"I didn't know she would lock the door.""

"But you knew she was trying to hide me.""

Silence.

That was enough.

Julian walked closer.

"Audrey, listen to me.""

"No.""

"I love you.""

The words felt empty.

"Do you?""

His eyes flashed.

"Of course I do.""

"Then why did you choose a wedding photo over our baby?""

"I didn't.""

"You did.""

He looked frustrated.

Like I was making things difficult.

That expression was familiar.

The expression he wore whenever his family hurt me and he wanted me to forgive quickly.

"Your family is under investigation.""

His face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

The fear.

"What?""

Diana stepped forward.

"Mr. Sterling.""

Julian looked at her.

"Who are you?""

"Someone who knows your signature appears on multiple financial transfers.""

His face went still.

I watched the man I married realize the truth was no longer hidden.

"Audrey.""

I shook my head.

"Don't.""

"You don't understand.""

"Then explain.""

He looked at the closed folder.

At Diana.

At me.

And for the first time in years, Julian Sterling had no prepared answer.

The monitor beside my bed continued beeping.

My baby's heartbeat.

The only thing in the room that still felt honest.

Then Julian whispered:

"Before you hear anything else, there is something you need to know about your investigation.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

May you like

His face turned pale.

"Your investigation team doesn't know the whole truth.""
