Chapter 8: The Truth I Hid
The hardest truth to admit is not the one someone else reveals.
It's the one you already know.
I had hidden things from Julian.
Not because I wanted to hurt him.
Because I was afraid.
The next morning, he sat across from me in silence.
Neither of us spoke.
The hospital room felt smaller than before.
Finally, he asked:
"What appointment?""
I looked down.
"Julian.""
"No.""
His voice cracked.
"Please don't do this.""
I looked at him.
"Do what?""
"Protect me with silence.""
The words surprised me.
Because they sounded exactly like something I would have said to him.
I took a breath.
"Three weeks ago, I went to the hospital.""
His expression changed.
"Why?""
"I had pain.""
"What kind?""
"Cramping.""
He stared.
"And you didn't tell me?""
"I didn't want you to worry.""
His laugh was quiet.
Painful.
"After everything we've been through, you still thought I couldn't handle the truth?""
I looked away.
The irony wasn't lost on me.
I had spent months angry at Julian for hiding information.
And I had done the same.
"What did the doctor say?""
"That stress could increase complications.""
Julian looked at the monitor.
"Because of the investigation?""
"Because of everything.""
He closed his eyes.
"I should have protected you.""
I didn't answer.
Because he should have.
But guilt did not repair damage.
Then Diana entered.
Her expression was serious.
"We found something.""
Neither of us moved.
"What?""
She placed a file down.
"The person who accessed the medical records wasn't Vanessa.""
My stomach tightened.
"Then who?""
Diana looked at Julian.
"Your mother.""
Julian went still.
"Eleanor?""
"Yes.""
I felt anger rise.
"What did she want?""
Diana opened the file.
"She requested information about the pregnancy.""
"Why?""
"Because she was worried.""
I almost laughed.
"Worried?""
Diana continued.
"She was trying to determine if the baby had inherited a condition.""
I frowned.
"What condition?""
Nobody answered.
That scared me.
Finally Diana said:
"The condition your father had.""
Julian looked confused.
"My father?""
Richard, who had arrived behind Diana, spoke quietly.
"The Sterling family has a genetic disorder.""
I looked between them.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?""
Julian looked at me.
"I didn't know.""
Richard nodded.
"Most of the family doesn't.""
Diana handed me the file.
Inside were medical records.
Old ones.
Names.
Dates.
Then I saw it.
The connection.
Vanessa hadn't just wanted revenge.
She had wanted proof.
Proof that the Sterling family had hidden something much bigger.
I looked at Julian.
"Your father knew.""
Richard nodded.
"And Eleanor knew.""
The room fell silent.
Then Julian whispered:
"That's why she wanted the baby records.""
I nodded slowly.
"She wasn't worried about the wedding.""
She was worried about what I would discover.
The door suddenly opened.
Security rushed in.
"Everyone stay where you are.""
My heart jumped.
"What happened?""
The officer looked at Diana.
"We found someone trying to enter the restricted records area.""
"Who?""
The officer hesitated.
Then answered:
"Mrs. Eleanor Sterling.""
Julian closed his eyes.
His mother.
Again.
The officer continued:
"She was carrying this.""
He handed Diana a small envelope.
Diana opened it.
Her face changed.
"What is it?""
She looked at me.
"It's a confession.""
Everyone froze.
"Whose?""
Diana looked at the handwriting.
Then at Julian.
"Your father's.""
I stared.
"That's impossible.""
Diana slowly opened the paper.
"The confession was written twenty years ago.""
Julian stepped closer.
"What does it say?""
Diana read the first line.
And the blood drained from her face.
"To my son Julian...""
She stopped.
I whispered:
"Keep going.""
Diana looked at the page.
Then said:
"'If you are reading this, it means I failed to stop the people closest to me.''"
Julian's breathing changed.
The next sentence was worse.
"'Your mother and sister are not the only ones responsible.''"
Nobody spoke.
Diana turned the page.
Her eyes moved across the words.
Then she looked up.
"Audrey.""
"What?""
She held the confession tightly.
"Your father-in-law named another person.""
My heart stopped.
"Who?""
Diana's voice was barely above a whisper.
"The person who taught the Sterling family how to hide money.""
She looked at me.
"The person who created the entire system.""
A pause.
May you like
Then:
"Your father.""
