Chapter 7: The Secret They Buried

The name stayed in the room long after it was spoken.

Like smoke.

Like a warning.

"Your father.""

Julian stared at the attorney.

"My father is dead.""

The attorney nodded.

"I know.""

"Then explain.""

Richard placed the ledger down.

"Your father discovered the fraud before he died.""

I looked at him.

"Why didn't anyone know?""

"Because he was trying to expose it quietly.""

Julian laughed bitterly.

"My father built Sterling Ridge.""

"No.""

Richard looked at him.

"Your father built the image of Sterling Ridge.""

The distinction mattered.

Because I understood it.

The family had spent decades protecting a name.

Not protecting people.

Julian sat down.

"What did he find?""

Richard opened the ledger.

"Your mother and sister were moving money through fake companies. But they weren't the only ones.""

"Vanessa.""

"Yes.""

I looked at the pages.

"Why did my father hire her?""

"He didn't.""

Richard looked at me.

"She found him.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Why?""

"Because she needed access.""

"To what?""

Richard looked at Julian.

"To the Sterling family.""

The room went quiet.

Diana flipped through the pages.

"There are payments here.""

She looked closer.

"Twenty years ago.""

Richard nodded.

"Vanessa Reed was not a random investigator.""

I looked at him.

"What was she?""

His answer was quiet.

"The daughter of the man your father destroyed.""

Julian froze.

"What?""

Richard sighed.

"Before Sterling Ridge became what it is today, there was another company involved.""

He looked at me.

"Your father-in-law accused a business partner of fraud.""

"And?""

"The man went to prison.""

I understood.

"Vanessa was his daughter.""

Richard nodded.

"She spent twenty years planning revenge.""

Julian looked sick.

"She used my family.""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because she believed your father stole her life.""

Silence.

For the first time, Vanessa's actions made sense.

Not justified.

But understandable.

A person carrying anger for decades could become something terrifying.

Diana closed the ledger.

"But why frame Julian?""

Richard looked at me.

"Because Julian was the perfect target.""

I looked at my husband.

The man who had failed me.

The man who had also been betrayed.

"He was innocent?""

Richard didn't answer.

Not immediately.

That worried me.

"Was he?""

Richard looked at Julian.

"No.""

Julian's face changed.

"What?""

"You weren't involved in the fraud.""

A pause.

"But you did know something was wrong.""

Julian looked away.

My heart sank.

"What did you know?""

He didn't answer.

"Julian.""

His jaw tightened.

"Years ago, I found money transfers.""

I stared.

"And?""

"I asked my mother.""

"What did she say?""

"She told me it was family business.""

"And you believed her.""

His silence hurt.

"I was young.""

"You were thirty-two.""

He looked ashamed.

"I was scared.""

I turned away.

The truth was becoming a pattern.

Everyone had reasons.

Everyone had fears.

But somehow I was always the person left carrying the consequences.

Diana stood.

"We need to secure this ledger.""

Richard shook his head.

"Not yet.""

"Why?""

"Because Vanessa knows it exists.""

I looked toward the window.

"She knows everything.""

Richard nodded.

"And she will come back.""

That evening, I finally fell asleep.

For three hours.

Until my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Then a voice.

Vanessa.

"Audrey.""

My blood went cold.

"Where are you?""

She ignored the question.

"I wanted to tell you something before everything changes.""

"What?""

A pause.

Then:

"You think Julian was the person who betrayed you.""

I sat up.

"What are you saying?""

"You should ask him why your baby's medical records were accessed two weeks before the wedding.""

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

My hands started shaking.

Julian woke up.

"What happened?""

I looked at him.

"Someone accessed our baby's records.""

His face changed.

"What?""

"Two weeks ago.""

He stood.

"I don't know anything about that.""

I watched him carefully.

Because I wanted to believe him.

I needed to.

Then his phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

One sentence.

One name.

And my heart stopped.

*Ask your wife about the appointment she never told you about.*

Julian looked at me.

"What appointment?""

I couldn't answer.

May you like

Because suddenly...

I wasn't sure Vanessa was the only person hiding things.
