Chapter 9: The Family Secret
Daniel watched the security footage three more times.
Each time, he hoped he had misunderstood.
Each time, the same person appeared.
His uncle.
Michael Whitmore.
The man who had hugged him after his father disappeared.
The man who had told him, “Family takes care of family.””
The man who had attended every birthday when Daniel was a child.
The man who had sat beside Margaret at the hospital when she was sick.
Daniel leaned back in his chair.
The betrayal felt different.
Ethan had been a friend.
Lauren had been a mistake.
But Michael was family.
The office door opened.
Margaret walked in.
“You’re still here?””
Daniel quickly closed the footage.
Too late.
She saw his face.
“What happened?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That worried her more.
“Daniel.””
He turned the screen back toward her.
The video played.
Michael entered the building.
Michael accessed confidential files.
Michael handed something to someone waiting outside.
Margaret watched silently.
Then she covered her mouth.
“No.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You know something.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
But her voice was weak.
Daniel stood.
“Mom.””
She closed her eyes.
“I know what your uncle was like when we were younger.””
“What does that mean?””
Margaret sat down slowly.
“Your father trusted Michael more than anyone.””
Daniel frowned.
“Then why did they stop talking?””
She looked at the screen.
“Because Michael was the first person to believe Richard.””
The room became quiet.
Daniel remembered.
All his life, he had heard only one version of the story.
His father left.
His father failed.
His father gave up.
But now every piece seemed connected to the same person.
Richard Hayes.
And the people around him.
“What happened between them?””
Margaret took a deep breath.
“Your father discovered Michael was secretly working with Richard.””
Daniel froze.
“Wait.””
She nodded.
“Michael wanted control of the company.””
“But why help Richard now?””
“Because he never stopped wanting it.””
Daniel walked toward the window.
Outside, the city lights reflected against the glass.
Everyone he trusted had been hiding something.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A familiar voice replied.
“Daniel.””
His body went still.
“Uncle Michael.””
Michael sighed.
“I know you found out.””
Daniel’s hand tightened around the phone.
“You broke into my company.””
“I did what I had to do.””
“You helped Richard steal from me.””
“No.””
Michael’s voice hardened.
“I helped restore what should have been mine.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Mine?””
“Your father took everything from me.””
“My father?””
Michael’s voice became angry.
“You don’t know what happened.””
“Then tell me.””
Silence.
Finally, Michael said:
“Meet me.””
Daniel looked toward Margaret.
She shook her head.
“Don’t go.””
But Daniel already knew.
He needed answers.
An hour later, he stood inside an old restaurant on the edge of town.
Michael sat alone.
No suit.
No confidence.
Just an exhausted man.
Daniel sat across from him.
“Start talking.””
Michael looked down.
“Your father was not the hero you think he was.””
Daniel said nothing.
“Robert and I built that company together.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
Michael leaned forward.
“Your father was brilliant. Everyone loved him. Investors trusted him. Employees followed him.””
Daniel frowned.
“And you hated that?””
Michael looked away.
“I was his brother.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
Michael’s eyes hardened.
“I hated that I was invisible.””
The honesty surprised Daniel.
Michael continued.
“Richard saw that.””
“He used you.””
Michael smiled sadly.
“Yes.””
For a moment, Daniel saw something human in him.
Regret.
Then Michael ruined it.
“But he was right about one thing.””
“What?””
“You never earned that company.””
Daniel stared.
“What?””
“You inherited everything because Robert felt guilty.””
Michael pulled out a folder.
“He created a secret agreement.””
Daniel opened it.
Inside was an old document.
His father’s signature.
A transfer agreement.
But this one was different.
Michael pointed.
“Your father promised me half.””
Daniel read carefully.
Then he noticed something.
A date.
A date after Robert disappeared.
“This was created after he left.””
Michael looked away.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“You forged this.””
Michael said nothing.
“You forged it.””
The older man looked tired.
“I needed something.””
“You destroyed my family for something you wanted.””
Michael’s voice broke.
“You don’t understand what it feels like to spend your whole life being second.””
Daniel stood.
“No.””
He looked at his uncle.
“I understand exactly.””
Michael looked up.
Daniel continued.
“My mother spent fifteen years raising me alone.””
Silence.
“She was second to nobody.””
Michael looked down.
For the first time, he looked ashamed.
Then his phone buzzed.
He checked it.
His expression changed.
Daniel noticed.
“What?””
Michael didn’t answer.
“Who was that?””
Michael slowly stood.
“You need to leave.””
Daniel grabbed his arm.
“What is happening?””
Michael looked at him.
Fear appeared in his eyes.
Real fear.
“Richard wasn’t trying to escape.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
“He wanted us all in the same place.””
The restaurant lights flickered.
Michael whispered:
“He knew you would find me.””
Daniel released his arm.
“Why?””
Michael looked toward the window.
A black car had stopped outside.
“He wanted to see if I would choose him…”
A pause.
“…or choose you.””
The restaurant door opened.
A man walked in.
Richard Hayes.
Daniel’s blood ran cold.
May you like
Richard smiled.
“Family reunions are always emotional.””
