Chapter 6: The Secret Account
Daniel barely slept.
He sat alone in his office until sunrise, staring at the screen.
The first file remained open.
Margaret Whitmore.
The name felt wrong sitting inside a folder created by Richard Hayes.
His mother had spent her entire life avoiding powerful people.
She had never cared about money.
She cared about keeping the lights on.
She cared about making sure Daniel ate dinner.
She cared about things Richard Hayes probably considered meaningless.
Daniel clicked the file.
The documents loaded.
At first, they seemed ordinary.
Bank transfers.
Property records.
Old contracts.
Then he saw the date.
Fifteen years earlier.
The same year Robert disappeared.
Daniel leaned closer.
There was an account.
An account opened under Margaret’s name.
But Margaret didn’t know about it.
The amount inside made him sit back.
Three million dollars.
His phone rang.
It was Margaret.
“Daniel?””
He answered immediately.
“Mom, I need you to come here.””
Her voice changed.
“What happened?””
“Just come.””
Twenty minutes later, Margaret walked into his office.
She looked exhausted.
She had barely changed clothes from the night before.
Daniel turned the laptop toward her.
Her face went pale.
“What is that?””
“Did you know about this account?””
She stared at the screen.
“No.””
“Mom.””
“I swear.””
Daniel watched her carefully.
He believed her.
Because Margaret had spent years struggling financially.
She would never hide millions of dollars.
“Then why is your name on it?””
Margaret sat down slowly.
“I don’t know.””
Robert entered behind her.
“I do.””
Both turned.
Robert placed a folder on the desk.
“Richard created it.””
Margaret looked at him.
“Why?””
“To make it look like you accepted money.””
Daniel frowned.
“Accepted money for what?””
Robert was quiet.
Then he answered.
“For betraying me.””
The room became still.
Daniel looked between them.
“What are you saying?””
Robert sat down.
“Richard wanted to destroy my reputation. He wanted everyone to believe I lost everything because I trusted the wrong people.””
Margaret shook her head.
“He framed me?””
“Yes.””
Daniel looked at the documents again.
“He made it look like you paid Mom?””
Robert nodded.
“Exactly.””
“Why?””
“Because if I disappeared, and Margaret had a secret account, everyone would assume she was involved.””
Margaret’s eyes filled.
“He wanted me to look guilty.””
Robert nodded.
“He wanted both of us destroyed.””
Daniel felt anger rising.
All his life, he had believed his father abandoned them.
Now he was discovering that the story had been carefully rewritten.
Then Lauren appeared at the office door.
Daniel looked up.
“What are you doing here?””
She held a cup of coffee.
“I thought you needed this.””
Nobody spoke.
Lauren placed it on the desk.
“I know I don’t deserve your forgiveness.””
Daniel said nothing.
“But I came because I found something.””
She pulled out an envelope.
Robert immediately recognized it.
“Where did you get that?””
“My father’s study.””
Robert’s face tightened.
“You were there?””
“Yes.””
Lauren looked at Daniel.
“After I left your house, I went home.””
She swallowed.
“My father was angry. He said I ruined everything.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What did he say?””
Lauren opened the envelope.
“He said the wedding wasn’t supposed to end like this.””
She removed a photograph.
Daniel took it.
His blood ran cold.
It was a picture of him.
Taken months earlier.
Outside his company building.
Another photograph.
Him and Margaret at the garden.
Another.
Lauren standing beside Richard.
Daniel looked up.
“He was watching us.””
Lauren nodded.
“Yes.””
Margaret whispered:
“How long?””
Lauren’s eyes filled with shame.
“Before I even met Daniel.””
The truth was heavier than anyone expected.
Daniel looked at the photographs.
His entire relationship.
His engagement.
His wedding.
Everything had been observed.
Controlled.
Planned.
Then another piece of paper slipped from the envelope.
Daniel picked it up.
It was a legal document.
His name was printed at the top.
And below it was a signature.
His own signature.
But Daniel had never signed it.
He looked at Lauren.
“What is this?””
She went pale.
“I don’t know.””
Robert grabbed the paper.
His expression changed instantly.
“Daniel…”
“What?””
Robert looked at him.
“This is a transfer agreement.””
“For what?””
Robert’s voice became barely a whisper.
“Your entire company.””
Daniel stared.
“That’s impossible.””
Robert shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at the signature.
“Someone forged your name.””
The office door suddenly opened.
Ethan rushed inside.
His face was terrified.
“Daniel.””
Everyone turned.
“What happened?””
Ethan looked at the document.
Then at Daniel.
“Richard filed it this morning.””
Daniel stood.
“What?””
Ethan’s voice dropped.
“The company is no longer yours.””
A long silence followed.
Then Daniel looked at the window.
Outside, the city was waking up.
People were starting their ordinary days.
But his entire life had changed overnight.
And somewhere, Richard Hayes was probably smiling.
May you like
Because the wedding had failed.
But his real plan had only just begun.
