Chapter 3: The Name From The Past

The wedding reception ended without anyone eating dessert.

The cake remained untouched.

The champagne turned warm.

The flowers that had decorated the tables began to wilt under the weight of the silence.

Daniel took Margaret home himself.

Neither of them spoke much during the drive.

The city lights passed across the windshield, but Margaret barely noticed.

Finally, Daniel broke the silence.

“Mom.””

She looked at him.

“Yes?””

“Why didn’t you tell me about my father?””

Margaret’s fingers tightened around her purse.

“I told you your father left.””

“You said he left because he wasn’t ready to be a parent.””

She looked away.

“That was true.””

“But not the whole truth.””

The car became quiet.

Margaret had spent fifteen years protecting one secret.

She never thought it would return on the day her son got married.

When they arrived at her house, Daniel followed her inside.

The little garden sat behind the window.

The roses were visible beneath the moonlight.

Daniel looked at them.

“The flowers you gave Lauren…”

Margaret nodded.

“I grew them for her.””

“I know.””

“She hated them.””

Daniel shook his head.

“She didn’t hate the flowers.””

Margaret looked at him.

“She hated where they came from.””

That sentence broke something inside her.

She sat down at the kitchen table.

The same table where she had helped Daniel with homework.

The same table where she had cried quietly after his father disappeared.

“Your father’s name was Robert,” she said.

Daniel sat across from her.

“I know.””

“No. You know the name. You don’t know what happened.””

Margaret stared at the old wooden surface.

“Robert wasn’t always a bad man. When we met, he was kind. He made promises. He told me we would build a family together.””

She paused.

“Then he met people who made him believe he deserved more.””

“Who?””

Margaret hesitated.

“Lauren’s father.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“What?””

“Your father and Richard Hayes were partners years ago.””

Daniel stood up.

“The Richard Hayes?””

She nodded.

The name was famous in the business world.

A billionaire investor.

A man known for destroying competitors.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I wanted you to have a normal life.””

Daniel walked toward the window.

“Mom, my entire life has been connected to this.””

“I thought I had buried it.””

A knock interrupted them.

Both turned.

It was almost midnight.

Daniel frowned.

“No one knows we’re here.””

He walked to the door and looked through the window.

Then he froze.

“It’s Lauren.””

Margaret’s heart sank.

Daniel opened the door but didn’t step aside.

Lauren stood outside.

Her makeup was slightly ruined.

Her perfect wedding appearance was gone.

“Daniel, please.””

“No.””

“I need to explain.””

“You explained enough tonight.””

She looked past him.

“Margaret, I’m sorry.””

Margaret remained silent.

Lauren’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was angry. I shouldn’t have hit you.””

Daniel’s expression didn’t change.

“You shouldn’t have done a lot of things.””

Lauren lowered her voice.

“My father forced me into this.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Your father forced you to slap my mother?””

“No.””

She looked at him.

“He forced me to marry you.””

The words hung in the air.

Daniel stared.

“What?””

Lauren wiped her tears.

“I didn’t know everything at first. My father told me Daniel Whitmore was the only person who could save our family.””

Margaret stepped forward.

“Save your family?””

Lauren looked at her.

“Your husband destroyed my father.””

Margaret went still.

“Your father destroyed mine,” Lauren continued.

Daniel looked between them.

“What happened?””

Lauren opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

Because another car pulled up outside.

A black luxury vehicle.

The passenger door opened.

A man stepped out.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Confident.

Margaret’s face turned pale.

She recognized him immediately.

“Robert…”

Daniel looked at her.

“You know him?””

Margaret couldn’t answer.

May you like

Because the man walking toward the house was not supposed to exist in their lives anymore.

And he was holding a folder with Daniel’s name written across it.
