Chapter 5: The Betrayal At The Door

Daniel stood frozen beneath the dim porch light.

The person stepping out of the car was Ethan.

His best friend.

The man who had stood beside him at the altar.

The man who had handed him the messages that exposed Lauren’s greed.

For a few seconds, Daniel couldn’t understand what he was seeing.

Ethan closed the car door slowly.

He looked uncomfortable.

Not guilty.

Not yet.

Just uncomfortable.

That somehow made it worse.

“Daniel,” Ethan said.

Daniel stepped away from the garden.

“No.””

Ethan stopped.

“I can explain.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

The sound carried no humor.

“Everyone seems to have an explanation tonight.””

Lauren looked between them.

“Ethan?””

Ethan didn’t answer her.

That was when Daniel realized something.

They knew each other.

Not just knew each other.

They knew each other well.

His stomach tightened.

“How long?””

Ethan looked down.

“How long what?””

“How long have you been involved?””

The silence answered before Ethan did.

Margaret moved closer to her son.

“Daniel…”

He raised his hand gently.

“No, Mom. I need to hear this.””

Ethan swallowed.

“I never wanted it to happen this way.””

Daniel stared at him.

“That sentence means it already happened.””

Robert stepped forward.

“You’re Richard Hayes’s man.””

Ethan’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Daniel saw it.

And that small reaction hurt more than anything else.

“Ethan?””

His friend sighed.

“My father worked for Richard.””

“And?””

“And when he died, Richard helped my family.””

Daniel shook his head.

“So you owe him.””

“It wasn’t that simple.””

“It never is with people who betray you.””

Ethan looked away.

“I was supposed to watch you.””

The words landed like a punch.

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“Watch me?””

Ethan nodded slowly.

“When you started getting close to Lauren, Richard wanted information.””

Margaret covered her mouth.

Lauren stepped back.

“My father knew about me?””

“Yes.””

She looked horrified.

“Ethan…”

He looked at her.

“You were never supposed to fall for him.””

Daniel stared.

The sentence felt unreal.

“You’re saying my marriage was a plan?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

Daniel walked closer.

“My wedding was a plan?””

Ethan finally looked at him.

“I was told it was just business.””

Daniel pointed toward the house.

“My mother was slapped.””

Ethan flinched.

“I didn’t know that would happen.””

“But you knew enough to stand there.””

“I wasn’t there.””

“You were.””

Ethan had no answer.

Daniel turned away.

The pain on his face was impossible to hide.

For years, Ethan had been more than a friend.

He had been the person Daniel called when his mother was sick.

The person who helped him move into his first apartment.

The person who stood beside him when he proposed to Lauren.

And now Daniel realized he had been inviting a spy into every important moment of his life.

Robert looked at Ethan.

“What did Richard want?””

Ethan hesitated.

Then he reached into his jacket.

“I have something.””

Daniel looked at him suspiciously.

Ethan pulled out a small flash drive.

“This.””

“What is it?””

“Evidence.””

Daniel didn’t move.

“You expect me to trust you?””

“No.””

Ethan’s voice cracked slightly.

“I don’t expect anything.””

He held out the drive.

“I’m trying to fix what I helped break.””

Lauren stepped forward.

“Why now?””

Ethan looked at her.

“Because tonight I watched him marry someone who never loved him.””

Lauren looked away.

The words hurt because they were true.

Daniel took the flash drive.

“Where did you get this?””

“Richard’s office.””

Robert’s expression changed.

“You stole from him?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“Because he was going to destroy you.””

Daniel stared at the drive.

“What’s on it?””

Ethan hesitated.

Then he said:

“Proof that Lauren wasn’t the only person he manipulated.””

Everyone became silent.

Daniel looked at Lauren.

She looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Ethan answered quietly.

“Your father planned to take your company before the wedding even happened.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“But he couldn’t.””

“He could.””

Ethan looked at him.

“He already did.””

The porch light flickered.

Daniel looked down at the flash drive in his hand.

Then at the dark street.

For the first time that night, he understood.

The slap was never the beginning.

It was only the moment the mask fell.

And somewhere out there, Richard Hayes was still holding the strings.

The next morning, Daniel opened the flash drive.

And the first file had only one name.

His mother’s.
