Chapter 8: The Last Move
Richard Hayes had spent decades controlling people.
He controlled employees.
Partners.
Enemies.
Even his own daughter.
But there was one thing he never learned how to control.
The truth.
Within hours, the documents began spreading.
The recordings.
The fake contracts.
The messages proving the wedding had been planned as a business attack.
Richard’s reputation collapsed faster than anyone expected.
But Daniel knew better than to celebrate too early.
People like Richard didn’t lose quietly.
That evening, Daniel returned to the garden.
The roses were still damaged.
But alive.
Margaret found him there.
“You look like your father.””
Daniel smiled faintly.
“That sounds like an insult.””
“It isn’t.””
She sat beside him.
“I spent years hating Robert.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Do you still?””
Margaret was quiet.
Then she shook her head.
“I hate what he did.””
A pause.
“But I don’t hate that he came back and told the truth.””
Daniel looked at the roses.
“Why didn’t you ever tell me everything?””
“Because I wanted you to love your father.””
Daniel looked surprised.
“After everything?””
She nodded.
“You deserved a childhood without my anger.””
That sentence stayed with him.
A few hours later, Robert joined them.
For the first time in years, father and son sat together without fighting.
“I know I can’t fix fifteen years,” Robert said.
Daniel looked at him.
“No.””
Robert nodded.
“But I want to try.””
Daniel didn’t forgive him immediately.
Some wounds needed time.
But he didn’t walk away.
That mattered.
Then Lauren arrived.
Margaret looked at her carefully.
Lauren stopped several feet away.
“I know I shouldn’t be here.””
Daniel said nothing.
She held out something.
A small box.
He recognized it.
His wedding ring.
“I found this after everything happened.””
Daniel took it.
“I’m sorry.””
He looked at her.
“For what?””
“For all of it.””
Her voice shook.
“I was scared. My father made me believe I had no choice.””
Daniel nodded.
“But you still chose.””
Lauren looked down.
“Yes.””
That honesty surprised him.
She didn’t defend herself.
She didn’t blame anyone.
“I don’t expect you to forgive me.””
Daniel closed the box.
“I don’t know if I can.””
She nodded.
“I understand.””
For the first time, Daniel saw Lauren without the perfect dress.
Without the expensive jewelry.
Without the carefully prepared smile.
Just a person who had made terrible choices.
Then her phone rang.
She answered.
Her face changed.
“What?””
Daniel noticed.
“What happened?””
Lauren looked at him.
“It’s my father.””
Robert stood immediately.
“What did he do?””
Lauren swallowed.
“He escaped.””
The garden became silent.
Daniel looked toward the street.
“How?””
“He had help.””
Robert’s expression darkened.
“Who?””
Lauren looked at Daniel.
Then whispered:
“Someone inside your company.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
The battle wasn’t over.
Not yet.
Later that night, Daniel returned to his office alone.
He needed answers.
The security footage was playing on his computer.
He watched the entrance.
One employee.
Two employees.
Three.
Then he stopped.
The timestamp showed midnight.
The person entering the building.
The person accessing private files.
The person who helped Richard.
Daniel leaned closer.
Because he recognized the face.
It was someone who had cried with him.
Someone who had promised loyalty.
Someone who had stood beside him during the hardest years.
Daniel whispered:
“No…”
The screen showed the person turning toward the camera.
And smiling.
Because they knew Daniel would eventually find out.
May you like
The person helping Richard Hayes was not a stranger.
It was someone from Daniel’s own family.
