Chapter 4: The Man Who Came Back

Robert Whitmore stood outside the house like he belonged there.

Like fifteen years had not passed.

Like he had not walked away from Margaret and their son without looking back.

Daniel opened the door wider.

“What are you doing here?””

Robert looked older than Daniel remembered.

His hair was gray.

His face had deeper lines.

But his eyes were the same.

Cold.

Calculating.

“I came because you deserve the truth.””

Margaret stepped forward.

“You lost the right to tell him anything.””

Robert looked at her.

“I know.””

The answer surprised her.

For once, he didn’t argue.

Daniel noticed.

“What’s in the folder?””

Robert held it out.

“Everything.””

Daniel took it.

Inside were contracts.

Bank records.

Emails.

Photographs.

His hands moved faster as he read.

“What is this?””

Robert looked at Margaret.

“Proof that I didn’t abandon you because I stopped loving you.””

Margaret laughed softly.

A painful laugh.

“You left because you were afraid.””

Robert didn’t deny it.

“I made a deal with Richard Hayes.””

Daniel looked up.

“Lauren’s father?””

“Yes.””

Robert continued.

“Years ago, Richard wanted control of my company. I refused. He threatened me.

He threatened Margaret. He threatened you.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“So you left to protect us?””

“I thought I was.””

Margaret shook her head.

“You disappeared.””

“I was trying to find evidence against him.””

“And you couldn’t call?””

Robert looked down.

“I made mistakes.””

Daniel closed the folder.

“You don’t get to come back and call them mistakes.””

Robert accepted the anger.

“I know.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Lauren stepped forward.

“My father told me Robert was the villain.””

Robert looked at her.

“He told you I destroyed your family?””

She nodded.

“He said Daniel’s family took everything from us.””

Robert sighed.

“Richard lost because he was exposed. Not because of me.””

Daniel looked at Lauren.

“Then why marry me?””

Lauren’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because my father threatened my mother. He said if I didn’t marry you and gain access to your company, he would ruin everything.””

Daniel stared at her.

“And you still did it.””

Lauren looked away.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than a lie.

Margaret watched her son.

She expected rage.

Instead, she saw disappointment.

“You could have told me.””

“I was scared.””

“You should have trusted me.””

Lauren whispered:

“I know.””

Daniel walked outside.

The garden was quiet.

The roses moved slightly in the wind.

A few hours earlier, one of those roses had been crushed under Lauren’s shoe.

Now Daniel picked it up from the ground.

The petals were damaged.

But the stem was still alive.

Margaret came beside him.

“Are you okay?””

Daniel looked at the flower.

“No.””

She touched his shoulder.

“But I will be.””

Behind them, Robert stood silently.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed immediately.

“Are you sure?””

Everyone looked at him.

Robert slowly lowered the phone.

“Richard knows we found the documents.””

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Robert looked toward the dark street.

“It means he’s coming.””

A car engine started somewhere nearby.

Slowly.

Quietly.

Like someone who already knew exactly where they were.

Robert’s voice dropped.

“And he isn’t coming to apologize.””

The headlights appeared at the end of the road.

Then Daniel saw the person sitting behind the wheel.

Someone he never expected.

Someone who had been standing beside him at the wedding.

Someone who had smiled while his mother was humiliated.

Daniel whispered:

May you like

“No…”

Because the person who opened the car door was the last person he thought would betray him.
