Chapter 8: The Father I Never Knew

I spent the next hour sitting alone in my car outside the hospital.

I didn’t drive.

I didn’t call anyone.

I just sat there.

Because sometimes the hardest thing isn’t discovering someone lied.

It’s realizing you don’t know where the lie began.

My entire marriage played in my head.

Every memory.

Every conversation.

Every moment I thought was ordinary.

Was it real?

Or was I just the last person to know the truth?

When I returned to Maya’s room, Claire immediately knew something was wrong.

“What happened?””

I looked at her.

“Ethan called.””

Her face went pale.

“What did he say?””

“He said you chose me.””

She looked away.

“Claire.””

Silence.

“He said I need to ask why.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“Because I loved you.””

“That’s not enough.””

She looked hurt.

“I know.””

“Not anymore.””

She sat down.

“I need to tell you something.””

I waited.

“When I met you, I already knew who you were.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She swallowed.

“Not personally.””

“Then what?””

“Your family name.””

The room became quiet.

“My family?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked terrified.

“Because your father was the reason I found Thomas.””

I stared.

“What are you talking about?””

Claire took a deep breath.

“Before you met me, your father invested in medical research.””

I knew my father had owned businesses.

But medicine?

No.

“He funded a project Thomas and Ethan worked on.””

My stomach tightened.

“And?””

“The project failed.””

“Why?””

“Because they discovered something they weren’t supposed to discover.””

“What?””

Claire looked at Maya.

“Certain genetic patterns.””

I felt a chill.

“Connected to what?””

“To your family.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

“I didn’t know at first.””

“You’re saying my daughter’s illness is connected to me?””

“I’m saying I don’t know.””

That was the first honest answer I had heard.

“I met you because I was looking for answers.””

The words hurt.

“Looking for answers?””

She nodded.

“But then I fell in love with you.””

I laughed quietly.

“So I was an investigation.””

“No.””

“Was I?””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“You were the first person who ever made me feel safe.””

I looked away.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because when I discovered the truth…”

She stopped.

“What?””

She whispered:

“I found out your father knew.””

I froze.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“My father is dead.””

“I know.””

“Then how?””

Claire reached into her bag.

She pulled out an old envelope.

“I found this after he passed away.””

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was familiar.

My father’s.

I read the first line.

*Claire, if you are reading this, then I am gone, and you have made the same mistake I made.*

My heart raced.

I kept reading.

*The child must never know the truth.*

I looked up.

“What child?””

Claire whispered:

“Maya.””

I stared at the letter.

Then back at Claire.

“This is impossible.””

The door opened.

Dr. Bennett stepped inside.

“I’m sorry.””

We turned.

“Maya woke up.””

I immediately moved toward her.

She looked scared.

“Dad?””

“I’m here.””

She looked at Claire.

“Mom?””

Claire stepped closer.

“I’m here too.””

Maya looked between us.

“Are you fighting because of me?””

The question shattered me.

“No.””

I held her hand.

“Never because of you.””

She looked down.

“I heard you talking.””

My heart sank.

“How much?””

She hesitated.

“Enough.””

Claire started crying.

“Maya…”

My daughter looked at her.

“Is that man my real dad?””

Nobody answered.

Because sometimes silence is louder than words.

Finally, I said:

“We’re finding the truth.””

Maya nodded slowly.

“I want to know.””

Later that evening, Dr. Bennett came back with more results.

He looked serious.

“We completed additional genetic testing.””

I stood.

“What did you find?””

He looked at the report.

“The mutation pattern is unusual.””

“How unusual?””

He hesitated.

“It appears Maya inherited genetic material from a relative we didn’t know about.””

My heart stopped.

“What relative?””

He looked at me.

“Someone directly connected to you.””

I felt dizzy.

“But my family—”

The door opened.

A nurse stepped in.

“Dr. Bennett?””

“Yes?””

She looked at the paper in her hand.

“We found something else.””

“What?””

She looked at me.

“The original DNA sample used for Maya’s first test wasn’t from Thomas Reed.””

I frowned.

“Then whose was it?””

The nurse swallowed.

“It was labeled with your name.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“My name?””

Claire covered her mouth.

The doctor stared at the file.

May you like

And then the nurse said the words that changed everything.

“The test was done before you ever met Claire.””
