Chapter 4: The Name On The Medical Record
I walked back to Maya’s room faster than I had ever walked anywhere.
Claire followed behind me.
Neither of us spoke.
Because we both knew.
Someone else had been involved.
Someone who had been close enough to access our daughter’s medical information.
Someone who had a reason to hide.
Dr. Bennett stood beside the computer when we entered.
Maya was asleep.
That small detail broke my heart.
While adults were uncovering secrets, my daughter was lying there exhausted, fighting something she never asked for.
“What did you find?”” I asked.
Dr. Bennett looked at Claire.
Then at me.
“The original scan request was submitted through a private referral.””
“By who?””
He turned the monitor.
A name appeared.
I stared.
I didn’t recognize it.
Then Claire did.
Her face changed.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“You know that name?””
She stepped closer.
Her hands shook.
“Where did you get this?””
Dr. Bennett answered calmly.
“It’s attached to the referral.””
Claire whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
“Who is it?”” I asked.
She didn’t respond.
“Claire.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“It’s my brother.””
I froze.
Her brother.
The man I had only met twice in fifteen years.
The man Claire always described as unreliable.
The man who disappeared for years at a time.
“Why would your brother order a scan for our daughter?””
“I don’t know.””
But this time, I believed her.
Because she looked genuinely terrified.
Dr. Bennett continued.
“There’s more.””
My stomach dropped.
“What more?””
“The specialist who reviewed the scan requested follow-up testing.””
“Who?””
He looked at the file.
“Dr. Thomas Reed.””
Claire went silent.
I noticed immediately.
“You know him too?””
She didn’t answer.
“Claire.””
Her lips trembled.
“He’s not just a doctor.””
“What does that mean?””
She looked at Maya sleeping in the bed.
Then whispered:
“He’s Maya’s biological father.””
The room stopped moving.
I couldn’t breathe.
I looked at my wife.
“What did you just say?””
Claire covered her mouth.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
“I don’t know.””
I laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because nothing about my life made sense anymore.
“Maya’s biological father?””
Claire cried silently.
“It happened before we met.””
I stared at her.
“You never told me?””
“I was afraid.””
“Everyone is always afraid.””
My voice rose.
“But somehow I’m always the last person to know.””
Maya stirred in the bed.
We both immediately became quiet.
I stepped away.
I couldn’t let her see this.
Not now.
Not when she needed us.
Dr. Bennett cleared his throat.
“There’s something important you need to understand.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“The scan indicates Dr. Reed may have known about Maya’s condition before today.””
My eyes moved back to Claire.
“What?””
Dr. Bennett continued.
“We’re trying to determine why.””
Claire’s phone suddenly rang.
The sound cut through the room.
She looked at the screen.
And her entire body froze.
I saw the name.
Dr. Thomas Reed.
Claire slowly answered.
“Hello?””
No one spoke for several seconds.
Then her face changed.
“What do you mean he knows?””
My heart pounded.
She looked at me.
Then at Maya.
Then whispered:
“Daniel…”
I stepped closer.
“What did he say?””
Claire’s voice shook.
“He said Maya was never supposed to find out this way.””
The call ended.
Silence.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
One sentence.
May you like
One that made my blood turn cold.
*“Ask your wife what really happened the night Maya was born.””*
