Chapter 5: The Night She Never Told Me About

I stared at the message on my phone until the words stopped looking like words.

*Ask your wife what really happened the night Maya was born.*

My fingers went numb.

For fifteen years, I had believed I knew the story of my daughter’s birth.

A long labor.

A frightened young mother.

A tiny baby placed in my arms.

A promise that I would love her no matter what.

I remembered every detail.

Or at least I thought I did.

I looked at Claire.

She was still standing beside Maya’s hospital bed, staring at the floor.

She knew.

Maybe not everything.

But enough.

“Daniel,” she whispered.

I held up my phone.

“Who sent this?””

Her face changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

That was the moment my heart broke.

Because she knew.

“Claire.””

She sat down slowly.

“I didn’t want you to find out like this.””

“Find out what?””

My voice was barely controlled.

“That my daughter’s medical records were hidden from me?””

She closed her eyes.

“Daniel…”

“Or that another man is her biological father?””

Maya shifted slightly in the bed.

We both froze.

For a second, I forgot everything except her.

My daughter.

The little girl who used to crawl into our bed during thunderstorms.

The girl who made me watch the same animated movie twenty times because it was her favorite.

The girl who still called me when she was nervous before a school presentation.

I lowered my voice.

“We’re not doing this here.””

Claire nodded.

A few minutes later, we were sitting in an empty waiting room.

The fluorescent lights above us buzzed.

It felt like the entire hospital was holding its breath.

“Start from the beginning,” I said.

Claire looked at her hands.

“I met Thomas before I met you.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

She swallowed.

“I met him when I was twenty-four.””

I stayed silent.

“He was finishing his medical training. I was working two jobs and barely making rent.””

She looked toward the window.

“I thought he loved me.””

“Did he?””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“I don’t know anymore.””

That answer hurt more than I expected.

“Then what happened?””

Claire took a deep breath.

“I found out I was pregnant.””

My jaw tightened.

“Maya.””

She nodded.

“Thomas was scared.””

“What do you mean scared?””

“He told me his career was just beginning. He said having a child would ruin everything.””

My hands curled into fists.

“And what did you say?””

“I told him I was keeping the baby.””

A long silence followed.

“Then?””

“He disappeared.””

I stared at her.

“He left you?””

“Yes.””

“Then how did he come back?””

Claire looked away.

“He didn’t.””

That confused me.

“Then why is he in her medical records?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

When she finally spoke, her voice was quiet.

“Because he never really disappeared.””

I felt cold.

“What does that mean?””

“He watched from a distance.””

The room seemed smaller.

“He knew about Maya?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Claire wiped her face.

“After she was born, he contacted me.””

“And you let him?””

“I was angry.””

“But you answered.””

She nodded.

“He said he regretted leaving. He said he wanted to help.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Help?””

“He was a doctor.””

“So you trusted him?””

“I thought he was only offering medical advice.””

“And then?””

Claire looked down.

“He asked for a paternity test.””

I froze.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

She started crying harder.

“I was afraid.””

Again.

That word.

Always that word.

“You keep saying that.””

“I was afraid you would leave.””

I stared at her.

“You thought I would leave Maya?””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“I thought you would leave me.””

The honesty of that sentence hit harder than any lie.

Because maybe she had spent fifteen years living with that fear.

But fear didn’t excuse what happened.

“You should have trusted me.””

“I know.””

“No, Claire.””

I leaned forward.

“You should have trusted our family.””

She looked away.

The door opened.

Dr. Bennett stepped inside.

“I’m sorry to interrupt.””

We both stood.

“Is Maya okay?””

“She’s stable.””

I released a breath.

“But there’s something you need to know.””

“What?””

He looked at the folder in his hand.

“The reason Dr. Reed knew about Maya’s condition is because he was monitoring her.””

Claire went pale.

“What?””

“He ordered follow-up reviews over the past several months.””

My stomach dropped.

“Without our permission?””

Dr. Bennett nodded.

“That’s what we’re investigating.””

Claire stood suddenly.

“Where is he?””

“Mrs. Carter—”

“Where is Thomas?””

Dr. Bennett hesitated.

“He came to the hospital earlier tonight.””

My entire body went still.

“He was here?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Before you arrived.””

I looked at Claire.

A terrible thought formed.

“Did he know she was coming here?””

Claire didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

The silence said everything.

A nurse rushed into the room.

“Dr. Bennett?””

He turned.

“We found another file attached to Maya’s records.””

The nurse looked uncomfortable.

“It’s a birth document.””

My heart stopped.

“A birth document?””

She nodded.

“And there’s something wrong.””

The nurse handed the paper to Dr. Bennett.

He read it.

Then slowly looked at us.

“What?””

His expression changed.

“The original birth certificate…”

He paused.

“It lists Thomas Reed as the father.””

I looked at Claire.

“That’s impossible.””

Her face was filled with horror.

Then the doctor finished the sentence.

“Because there is another version of the certificate.””

My throat tightened.

“Another version?””

He nodded.

“One that was legally changed.””

I stared at Claire.

“Changed by who?””

Nobody spoke.

May you like

Then the nurse answered quietly.

“Your wife.””
