Chapter 6: The Man Who Watched From The Shadows
I didn’t recognize the woman sitting across from me anymore.
Claire.
My wife.
The mother of my child.
The person I had trusted with every part of my life.
But now there were pieces of her story that existed completely outside of me.
Pieces she had protected.
Pieces she had buried.
Pieces that were finally breaking through.
The next morning, I stood outside Maya’s hospital room watching her sleep.
Her face looked peaceful.
For a few minutes, I allowed myself to forget everything else.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice came through.
“Daniel Carter?””
I knew immediately.
Thomas Reed.
My grip tightened.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
“You know exactly who this is.””
I stepped away from Maya’s door.
“What do you want?””
“I want to explain.””
I almost laughed.
“Explain?””
“Yes.””
“You had fifteen years.””
Silence.
Then:
“I know.””
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“My daughter is sick because you and Claire hid the truth.””
The line went quiet.
Then he said something I wasn’t expecting.
“She’s sick because Claire hid something from both of us.””
My chest tightened.
“What does that mean?””
“You think you know your wife.””
“I do.””
“No.””
His voice lowered.
“You know the version of Claire she wanted you to know.””
I looked through the glass at Maya.
“What did you do?””
“I tried to help her.””
“You abandoned her.””
“I was young.””
“So was she.””
Another silence.
Then he said:
“Meet me.””
“No.””
“You deserve the truth.””
“I don’t need anything from you.””
“Yes, you do.””
His next words stopped me.
“Because Maya’s condition isn’t random.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
“She inherited something.””
I felt the hallway spin.
“What are you talking about?””
“Meet me, Daniel.””
The call ended.
I stood there frozen.
A few minutes later, Claire found me.
“You talked to him.””
It wasn’t a question.
I turned.
“How did you know?””
“Because he called me too.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What did he say?””
She looked terrified.
“He said it’s time.””
“Time for what?””
She didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Claire.””
She looked at Maya’s room.
“I was hoping we would never have this conversation.””
“That’s what you said about everything.””
She flinched.
I hated that I noticed.
Because despite everything, I still cared.
That was the worst part.
“I need to know the truth,” I said.
She nodded slowly.
“You do.””
“Then tell me.””
Claire sat down.
“When Maya was born, Thomas discovered something.””
“What?””
“A genetic condition.””
I stared.
“What condition?””
“He said Maya had a higher risk of developing certain illnesses.””
“And you believed him?””
“Yes.””
“Then why hide it?””
“Because the first thing he said after telling me…”
She stopped.
“What?””
Claire’s eyes filled.
“He said I should consider giving Maya to him.””
My anger returned instantly.
“He wanted custody?””
“He said he could give her a better life.””
I shook my head.
“And you refused.””
“Yes.””
“Then why change the birth certificate?””
Claire looked away.
“Because Thomas threatened me.””
“With what?””
“He said he would take me to court.””
I stood.
“You should have told me.””
“I was pregnant. Alone. Terrified.””
“You weren’t alone.””
She looked at me.
“I wasn’t with you yet.””
That stopped me.
I forgot sometimes.
Before me, there was a whole life.
A whole story.
A whole person.
But it still didn’t excuse everything.
“So you changed the certificate.””
“Yes.””
“And erased him.””
“Yes.””
“Then why let him back in?””
“I didn’t.””
“Then how did he monitor Maya?””
Claire shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
A nurse suddenly appeared.
“Mr. Carter?””
I turned.
“Yes?””
“Dr. Bennett needs you immediately.””
We rushed back.
Dr. Bennett was standing beside Maya’s bed.
His expression was serious.
“We received additional test results.””
Claire grabbed my arm.
“What did they show?””
He looked at Maya.
Then at us.
“The condition is more complicated than we first thought.””
My stomach tightened.
“How?””
He opened a file.
“The genetic markers indicate Maya inherited this from a parent.””
Claire went pale.
“Which parent?””
Dr. Bennett hesitated.
Then said:
“That’s the problem.””
“What?””
“The markers don’t match Thomas Reed.””
I stared.
“What?””
He continued.
“They don’t match you either.””
Silence.
The machine beside Maya’s bed beeped softly.
My entire world narrowed.
“If Thomas isn’t her father…”
I looked at Claire.
“Then who is?””
Before she could answer, Maya’s eyes opened.
She looked between us.
“Mom?””
Claire immediately moved toward her.
“Yes, sweetheart?””
Maya’s voice was weak.
“Who is the man standing outside my room?””
We all turned.
Through the glass window.
A man stood in the hallway.
Watching us.
Thomas Reed.
But he wasn’t alone.
Beside him was another man.
May you like
Someone I had never seen before.
Someone who looked exactly like Maya.
