Chapter 2: The Appointment She Never Mentioned
The hospital hallway smelled like disinfectant and fear.
I had walked through that same hallway years earlier when Maya broke her arm falling from a tree.
Back then, Claire had cried harder than Maya.
She had held our daughter’s hand all night.
She had refused to leave her side.
But tonight?
Tonight Claire stood several feet away from her own child.
Like she was afraid to get too close.
Dr. Bennett closed the examination room door behind us.
“Mr. and Mrs. Carter, I need you to listen carefully.””
I looked at him.
“Is my daughter okay?””
He paused.
That pause was the worst answer possible.
“We found something concerning.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
“The scan shows abnormal tissue growth in the abdominal area.””
Claire covered her mouth.
I felt the world tilt.
“Are you saying she has cancer?””
Dr. Bennett looked serious.
“I’m saying we need more tests immediately.””
Maya’s name repeated in my mind.
Her laugh.
Her drawings taped to the refrigerator.
The way she used to mispronounce words when she was little.
Everything suddenly felt fragile.
“But you asked about previous imaging,” I said.
The doctor looked at Claire.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He hesitated.
Then he said something that changed everything.
“Because this does not look like something that appeared today.””
I slowly turned toward my wife.
Claire looked away.
“Claire?””
She didn’t answer.
“Why did the doctor ask about previous scans?””
“I don’t know.””
The lie came too quickly.
I stepped closer.
“Don’t do that.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Do what?””
“Pretend.””
“Daniel—”
“No. Our daughter is lying in that room right now, and you are acting like there isn’t something you’re not telling me.””
Claire looked toward the closed door.
Her voice dropped.
“I was trying to protect her.””
Those words made my blood run cold.
“Protect her from what?””
She didn’t answer.
“Claire.””
Finally, she whispered:
“From being scared.””
I stared at her.
“That doesn’t explain anything.””
Before she could respond, Nurse Nia opened the door.
“Dr. Bennett needs Maya moved for additional testing.””
I immediately walked inside.
Maya looked exhausted.
“Dad?””
I smiled even though I didn’t feel like smiling.
“I’m here.””
She looked at Claire.
“Mom?””
Claire stepped forward.
“I’m sorry.””
Maya frowned.
“For what?””
Claire opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
That scared me more than anything.
My wife had always been able to talk.
Even when she was wrong, she had an answer.
Now she had nothing.
The next few hours passed in a blur.
Blood tests.
More scans.
More waiting.
Waiting was the cruelest part.
Because there was nothing you could fight.
Nothing you could fix.
Just a clock moving slowly.
At midnight, I found Claire sitting alone in the waiting area.
She was holding her phone.
“You should sleep,” I said.
She looked up.
“I can’t.””
I sat across from her.
“Neither can I.””
For a moment, we were just two parents afraid for their child.
Then I noticed something.
Her phone screen.
A message notification was visible.
From a number I didn’t recognize.
The preview said:
*“You need to tell him before the doctors do.””*
My heart stopped.
I looked at Claire.
She quickly locked the phone.
“What was that?””
“Nothing.””
I laughed once.
A bitter sound.
“Nothing?””
“Daniel—”
“Who is that?””
She stood.
“It’s complicated.””
“No.””
I stood too.
“It’s not complicated. Someone knows something about our daughter, and you’re hiding it.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t want this to happen.””
“What does that mean?””
She looked toward Maya’s room.
Then whispered:
“I thought I had more time.””
The hallway suddenly felt colder.
“More time for what?””
Claire’s lips trembled.
Before she could answer, Dr. Bennett walked toward us holding a folder.
His expression told me the results were worse than I imagined.
“Mr. Carter?””
“Yes?””
“We found something in Maya’s medical history.””
I looked at Claire.
She looked at the floor.
The doctor opened the folder.
“There’s a record here from six months ago.””
My hands went numb.
“Six months ago?””
Claire closed her eyes.
Dr. Bennett continued.
“A private clinic ordered tests under Maya’s name.””
I turned toward my wife.
“No.””
Claire started crying.
“Daniel…”
“You knew?””
She said nothing.
“You knew our daughter was sick?””
“I thought it would go away.””
Those words destroyed something inside me.
“You thought?””
My voice shook.
“You watched her suffer?””
Claire covered her face.
“I was scared.””
The doctor stepped back, allowing us space.
But I barely heard anything anymore.
Because the woman I trusted most had been carrying a secret.
A secret about our daughter.
And as I stared at Claire, I realized something even worse.
She wasn’t the only person involved.
Because the message on her phone wasn’t from a doctor.
It wasn’t from the hospital.
May you like
It was from someone who had known all along.
And I needed to know who.
