Chapter 7: The Truth Hidden In Her Blood
The stranger disappeared before I could reach the hallway.
I ran.
The hospital doors swung open as I pushed through them.
“Hey!””
The man turned.
For a second, I saw his face clearly.
Same dark eyes as Maya.
Same small scar near the eyebrow.
A detail so tiny that nobody else would notice.
But I did.
Because I had spent twelve years studying my daughter’s face.
The man looked at me.
Then walked away.
“Wait!””
He stopped.
But he didn’t turn around.
Thomas Reed appeared behind him.
“Daniel.””
I spun.
“You knew he was here?””
Thomas looked uncomfortable.
“Yes.””
“Who is he?””
No answer.
I stepped closer.
“Who is he?””
Thomas sighed.
“My brother.””
I froze.
“What?””
His expression changed.
“My twin brother.””
I looked back toward the hallway.
The man was gone.
“That’s impossible.””
Thomas shook his head.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“It’s the reason everything happened.””
I stared at him.
“You’re telling me there are two of you?””
“Yes.””
“And Claire knew?””
Thomas looked away.
That was enough.
I walked back into Maya’s room.
Claire was standing beside her bed.
She looked exhausted.
“Tell me.””
She closed her eyes.
“I was hoping you would never meet him.””
“Who?””
She whispered:
“Ethan.””
The name felt heavy.
“Ethan Reed.””
Thomas entered behind me.
The room became painfully quiet.
Maya looked confused.
“Why are there so many secrets?””
That question destroyed all of us.
Because she deserved better.
She deserved answers.
Not adults protecting themselves.
I sat beside her.
“You’re right.””
She looked at me.
“We should have told you the truth.””
Claire started crying.
“I’m sorry.””
Maya looked at her.
“Mom…”
Claire held her hand.
“I made mistakes.””
Maya squeezed her fingers weakly.
“I know.””
That simple answer broke something inside me.
Children forgive things adults spend years running from.
Later, after Maya fell asleep, Thomas finally explained.
Ethan was his twin brother.
But unlike Thomas, Ethan had never become a doctor.
He had studied genetics.
He had spent years researching inherited conditions.
“He was the one who found the mutation,” Thomas said.
“Then why wasn’t he on the medical records?””
“Because he wasn’t allowed to practice medicine.””
“Why?””
Thomas looked uncomfortable.
“Because years ago, he was accused of unethical experiments.””
I frowned.
“Experiments?””
“He believed genetic diseases could be predicted before symptoms appeared.””
“And what did he do?””
Thomas didn’t answer.
Claire did.
“He tested people without permission.””
My stomach turned.
“And Maya?””
Claire looked down.
“He tested her when she was a baby.””
The room went silent.
“You let him?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I didn’t know.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“Ethan believed Maya was special.””
I looked at him.
“She’s a child.””
“I know.””
“Then why talk about her like she’s a project?””
Thomas looked ashamed.
“Because that’s how Ethan thinks.””
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Ethan.
I opened it.
*You deserve the full truth. Meet me alone.*
I showed Thomas.
His face changed.
“No.””
“What?””
“You can’t meet him.””
“Why?””
“Because Ethan doesn’t reveal information.””
He looked at the message.
“He trades it.””
I stared.
“What does that mean?””
Thomas took a deep breath.
“He always wants something in return.””
The next morning, Ethan called me.
I answered.
“What do you want?””
A calm voice replied.
“The truth.””
“You already know everything.””
“No.””
A pause.
“I know what Claire told you.””
My jaw tightened.
“What are you saying?””
“I know why Maya was hidden.””
I looked toward her hospital room.
“Explain.””
“She wasn’t hidden from me.””
Silence.
“She was hidden from you.””
My heart started racing.
“Why?””
“Because Claire discovered something when Maya was born.””
“What?””
His voice lowered.
“Something about your family.””
I frowned.
“My family?””
“Yes.””
Then he said the sentence that changed everything.
“Daniel, you need to ask yourself one question.””
“What?””
“Why did Claire choose you to raise Maya?””
I felt cold.
“What does that mean?””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Then I looked through the glass window.
At my daughter.
At Claire.
At the life I thought I understood.

And for the first time, a terrifying thought entered my mind.
What if Maya wasn’t the only secret Claire had hidden?
